ACTIVE CHARACTERS

Bridget Lacey — Friend + Colleague

Bridget and Tawny both work for the Sector. They keep one another entertained when the workday drags on a little too long. Though they haven't really hung out much outside of work, they're certainly working on it. >8) Tawny trusts her and... hey, she likes her enough to go camping! That's really saying something! There's bugs outside!

Felicity Everette — Best Bitch

Besties! Tawny and Felicity get along like a house on fire, likely because neither of them are inclined to be very messy or prying when it comes to sharing anything more than laughs and gossip. Felicity is always there when Tawny's feeling blue, just... not in that "typical" way that most of her other friends are (not in a way that forces Tawny to shut her out like she tends to do when someone tries to care). Instead, they go out, have fun, and make sure there's no room to think about all that "other" heavy stuff. They can enable one another in the worst way, which suits Tawny just fine.

Ferris Felwinter — Colleague

Ferris is a coworker. One that she knows is wary/avoidant of her because of her Gifts. One bad, drunken night — when Tawny lost her keys and was locked out of her apartment building with a dead phone — he stopped by to offer his help. She accidentally saw some of his memories, things got a little short when she came clean, and now... well... the air might seem a little chillier the next time they're in the same breakroom.

James Clark — Acquaintance + Sector Fellow

Tawny knows James via the Sector. They upturned his whole life and — like they do — tossed her at him to help manage the aftermath. Obviously and predictably, James wasn't having it. And Tawny understands, really, she does, and she'll try not to hold that against him. She feels for him. And she'll give him the benefit of the doubt. He was and still is going through it. But, should he try and take anything out on her now, she'll probably be a little more contentious about it.

Luck Harris — Friend + Colleague + Confidant

Luck and Tawny have been friends since Tawny started working at the Sector. They're in the same department and felt each other out fairly quickly in the beginning. They get along well, trust each other, and also share some grief/bitches about how the Sector operates. After Luck's split with his long-term boyfriend, he found himself with more time on his hands and fewer people to pal around with — so they've recently been hanging out a lot more. Really, they share a lot of confidence with one another and can have conversations (usually while drinking) that they might not have so easily with someone else. There's a lot of love there, even if they don't always get along.

Mason Lancaster — Acquaintance + Gym-Bro Hunk

A super attractive stranger that Tawny met at the gym on a night she might have been a little restless/weak. He's a bit oblivious, or perhaps just uninterested, though. Not surprising, since she made an absolute fool of herself by wiping out on her treadmill in her distraction.

Noah St Cloud — Ex-Situationship

Noah and Tawny were involved in a "not relationship". It didn't quite resemble any of her previous situationships (in that it survived a lot longer than any other and had quite a bit more substance to it). But the persistence of violent, gory incidents glimpsed in Noah's memory brought things to an abrupt end.

INACTIVE CHARACTERS

Atticus Hare — Stranger

Tawny met Atticus in a hardware store after her new art studio was vandalized. She was already thoroughly frustrated and nippy (the store owner was very pretentious and old-fashioned), so she wasn't particularly receptive to Atticus' attempts at being charming and helpful. She got pretty catty with him, told him off, stormed away and... they haven't run into each other since.

Josiah Quinn — Colleague

Josiah is one of her superiors in the Sector. Not her usual handler but he called upon her when his own options were limited. Beyond that one assignment, they never truly got to know one another. With what little interaction they had, she thinks of him as a stiff (but perhaps inwardly quite soft) man that she's convinced will work himself to death. Needs to get some sleep and should prioritize his own needs a little better.

Zane Fowler — Neighbor + Colleague

Zane happened upon Tawny on her birthday in a coffee shop. She recognized him as a Sector colleague and offered him a seat. Assumed: After a little bit of chatting, the pair discovered that they lived very close to one another and she invited him out to her birthday celebrations that night. Although Zane didn't show, Tawny did reach out to him later. She considers them friends. Occasionally she'll order surprise Doordash for him when she knows he's got a long night of studying ahead of him.

NPCs/ADOPTABLES

Andrea "Andy" Vokes — Niece + Stranger

Emeli's daughter. Only four years younger than Tawny. Tawny doesn't know the slightest thing about her other than she's Gifted.

Belle Vokes — Niece

The baby of the family and Cooper's little angel. Has her Daddy wrapped around her finger and gets away with everything. She's generally really sweet but can definitely throw tantrums when she doesn't get her way. Spoiled and chatty. Wild child.

Carter Vokes — Nephew

Cooper and Elise's only son. Much like his father and grandfather — gentle and soft-spoken. Big mama's boy. More artsy and creative like Tawny — she often takes him shopping for crafts. Is completely deaf and doesn't like wearing his implant. Is the reason Tawny learned ASL. Avoidant of most social interactions and finds making friends difficult. Enjoys astronomy/space and video games. Hates chaos and bickering/arguments (which there is a lot of when you live with four sisters).

Cooper Vokes — Brother

He reminds Tawny a lot of their father — gentle, conflict-averse, and a bit of a pushover. Cooper was born a couple of years after Emeli and seventeen years before Tawny. By the time Tawny could walk, like Emeli, he was out of the house and moved cities away. Unlike Emeli though, Coop is far less of a stranger. He came back home usually every other holiday and was in constant contact with Franklin between visits. Despite this, Tawny didn't really get to know him until he moved back to Los Eurosia to take over the family's bed and breakfast and soup kitchen when Franklin got sick. [break][break]

Coop was quick to start a family when he left Los Eurosia. He has five children with his wife, Elise, and his eldest daughter is only about nine years younger than Tawny. Tawny spends most holidays with them and comes over for dinner/family outings a lot. She's gathered that Cooper keeps some vague tabs on Emeli's whereabouts and happenings but that their relationship has always been strained. Cooper has requested that she won't seek any information about him in his memories. [break][break]

Dione Vokes — Mother + Deceased

Dione was almost forty years old when she had baby Tawny and, only a few years later, she was bedridden with a terminal illness. Most of Tawny's memories of her are colored by her sickness. As a little girl, she was afraid of her mother's frail, sickly state and would do her best to avoid her at all costs — sprinting past her room, never looking her in the eye, and hiding under her bed whenever her father would force her to spend time with her. She died just before Tawny's fifth birthday. [break][break]

When Tawny grew older and discovered her Gift, she learned a lot about Dione from her father's memories. Before being completely ravaged by her illness, Dione was a wild, temperamental, and spirited woman. Chaotic and flighty. Very popular in high school and college. Outspoken. Always the life of the party and the loudest voice in the room wherever she went.

Elise Vokes — Sister-in-Law

Cooper's wife. She reminds Tawny a lot of the Dione she saw in Franklin's memories. Very opinionated, outspoken, and strong-willed. Used to having the last word. Will bulldoze in arguments. A big hoot. Flirty and fun. Keeps Coop on his toes and doesn't let her kiddos get away with much. She is Gifted and not a fan of Tawny's work with the Sector. Believes that a safe world for her children (many of which are Gifted) can only be achieved once their existence is accepted. She's a fiery mama bear. Tawny and her get along very well though and do think of each other as sisters.

Emeli Vokes — Brother + Stranger

Emeli was the first-born child to Dione and Franklin Vokes. He was nineteen when Tawny was born — already out of the house and fled Los Eurosia. Tawny has only met him twice in her entire life — once at her mother's funeral and again at their father's. So he is very much an enigma to her. More stranger than sibling. However, there are a few things she's learned from the memories of Cooper and Franklin. [break][break]

As far as Tawny can gather, Emeli was a troubled and angry child. He was Dione and Franklin's introduction into the world of Gifted and, while Tawny has never been able to truly pinpoint exactly what his Gift is, she knows that it oft caused heated, angry arguments between him and Dione. They butted heads a lot and there was always tension when the two were in the same room. Emeli got into a lot of trouble and didn't come home many nights.[break][break]

In the year before Dione died, Emeli had a daughter. Dione begged to meet her grandchild before she passed but Emeli maintained his distance.[break][break]

There is no Sector file on him.

Evelyn Vokes — Niece

Coop and Elise's middle daughter. Kinda never grew out of the terrible-two stage. Foul-mouthed. Gets in a lot of trouble and is almost perpetually grounded. Likes to cause scenes and be a general menace. Stresses her mother tf out. Generally a little more chill when saddled with Tawny because Tawny isn't prone to kicking up a fuss when she does something meant to elicit a reaction. Does a lot of sports. Despite being really cliquey, doesn't have any close friends. A bully at school and at home.

Franklin Vokes — Father + Deceased

A gentle, conflict-averse, and soft-spoken sweetheart. Franklin was almost forty years old when Tawny was born and made a single, widowed parent before his daughter even started school. The loss of Dione completely devastated him. They'd been together since high school, raised two children together already, and he was simply incomplete without her. They'd done everything together. He lost himself in grief. And threw himself entirely into parenting little Tawny, compensating for her lack of a mother by trying to be everything to her. He was a helicopter parent — overdoting, overprotective, always present, demanding all of her time, smothering her, etc. [break][break]

Tawny was resentful of this as a child but, as she grew older, she slowly began to understand that her father really just needed her, because he'd never been alone. Was somewhat pathologically codependent. And eventually, she became complacent in filling that lonely void of his. They became very close. Did everything together. He's very much the reason Tawny has complicated, avoidant feelings about serious relationships. Not only does she fear losing someone the way he lost Dione, but she never wants to be to anyone else what she was to her father. Nor does she ever want to need someone as bad as he needed her. [break][break]

Much like Dione, Franklin ended up bedridden at the end of his life. Unlike how she'd handled her mother's disease though, Tawny was there for him. Always present. Until she accidentally erased most of his memory. He died a few weeks later. Tawny was twenty-two.

Lucio Areli — Ex-Boyfriend

Not too long after her father's death, Tawny kind of established herself as the way she is now. Picking up whatever love she could find only when she needed it. Lucio was essentially a dependable booty-call, someone she sought out more than once, that made himself into a "boyfriend" so he could mooch off whatever Tawny could provide him. He wasn't nice to her at all and she was actually really into that during this low point in her life — convinced she didn't want nice. That she didn't want to break another Stanton or Violet's heart. She wasn't his only "girlfriend" or the only apartment he crashed at and she was actually super okay with that. Kind of just... wearily resigned... to let him in when he came around. Nobody liked him. Hell, Tawny barely liked him. Elise very bluntly and wisely tried talking sense into Tawny every single time she saw her. [break][break]

Eventually, Lucio and Matty got into a full-blown fistfight, breaking tons of shit in her apartment, and that was the end of it. And no more Lucios, she decided. Looking back at it (and reflecting on how she had felt during the whole thing), sort of gave her a bit more backbone to say 'no' and be more firm in future relationships.

Matthew "Matty" Menke — Best Friend + FWB

He's kind of her safety net. The only really "easy", uncomplicated relationship she's had because neither of them ever really pressured it to be a "relationship". Still mentionable, though. Met in college and became practically inseparable. Study buddies — many afternoons lounging in some hole-in-the-wall coffee shop, chuckling and procrastinating actually doing what they needed to do. Party buddies, he towed her to all sorts of social things. He's a huge clown, lots of laughs. Together they painted a huge mural on the living room wall of his dinky apartment. [break][break]

He ended up dropping out and is kind of a deadbeat loser nowadays, still very much "into" that party life. But they're as close as ever and can still depend on one another to be that "familiar pick me up" when there becomes a need. She has a habit of running to him every time she ends something with someone else, taking solace in that safe, "this is nothing" that he embodies. And, for his part, he's come to a point where he kinda expects her to always be up and willing when he calls.

Millie Vokes — Niece

The second eldest child of Cooper and Elise. Is into a lot of the things Tawny did growing up like dance and volleyball, so Tawny is kind of her biggest fan when it comes to sports/recitals/games/etc. She's a very shy and introverted girl. Feels like she kinda disappears in Poppy's shadow and the two are very often on bad terms with one another. She's a huge tattletale and can be sort of manipulative when she wants to be. Terrible at setting any boundaries for herself. Hard for her to say no.

Poppy Vokes — Niece

The eldest child of Coop and Elise. She's a smart girl with a good head on her shoulders. Graduated high school (one year early) and entered college completely on scholarships. Wants to go into politicking and is huge on activist movements and humanitarian projects. She and Tawny have a strong relationship. Poppy has "run away" to her apartment more than a couple of times when Elise and her get in fights. They often talk about school, boys, and whatever else she doesn't feel like divulging with her mother. She's nice and sweet most of the time, but can get really riled up and defensive when it comes to injustice and the like. Thinks of Tawny as an older sister almost. Prone to taking on too many projects and stressing herself out.

Stanton Coldiron — Ex-Boyfriend + First Love

Tawny's high school beau. Stanton was a super sweet, respectful, and sensitive guy and their relationship was max cheese: tons of cutesy, romantic things. They went to prom/homecoming/school dances together. Wrote each other cliché love letters. Made playlists for one another. He met her Dad and did the whole nine yards for what was essentially an adolescent, kiddy love. He was kind of her "safe space" from Franklin — a reason to run off, leave the house, etc. She was all in... or so she thought. [break][break]

They started dating in her junior year of high school and they really had a blast during the summer after school ended — late nights spent on the town, running around, laughing and getting up to all sorts of things. But then all of a sudden Stanton was talking about going to the same college, growing up and having babies, etc, and Tawny pumped the brakes right before their first anniversary. She broke his heart essentially (and her own a little bit, too). He ignored her completely throughout their senior year and all of their shared friends kind of abandoned her.[break][break]

A couple of years back (when Stanton returned to Los Eurosia after finishing college) he reached out to her and they briefly spoke, updating one another on each other's lives and reminiscing about their time together. It was the typical "let's do this again some time" but Tawny let the connection kind of peter out again.

Violet Fletcher — Ex-Girlfriend + Old Heartache

Tawny and Violet met in college freshman orientation and quickly became BFFs. Like Stanton, she's ridiculously selfless and sweet. Always kept Tawny company as she worked in the soup kitchen with her father. Did school projects together, gossiped, and stayed up late. Early mornings grabbing breakfast, looking like death. Violet was there for Tawny during Franklin's slow decline. Kind of let her be super vulnerable with her. And eventually, she kind of forced Tawny to really stop, embrace what was happening, and cry it out. They kissed afterward, and you know... went from there.[break][break]

Violet really wanted to be Tawny's rock. Insisted on being there for her when she was down (which she very frequently was at this point in her life). Then when Franklin died and Violet's efforts doubled (her concerns multiplied as Tawny sort of shot off the deep end), Tawny snapped big-time. It was a very messy end with her sort of rage-quitting the whole thing, telling Violet off, saying tons of shit she didn't really mean, etc. Violet straight up disappeared after this, Tawny has no idea what happened to her. She dropped her classes and, as far as she knows, moved away. Occasionally Tawny gets an urge to look her up, see if she's okay and how she's doing, but is always too ashamed. As if she doesn't have the right.[break][break]

I think of Violet as one of Tawny's biggest regrets. I think what they shared would have been really sweet, really genuine, and something Tawny is too afraid to find again in someone else (because of how she just cruelly and impulsively stomped it out). She probably can't listen to a lot of music because of Violet, because it's music she introduced her to or made into playlists for her. Stuff like that.

Darcy Vance — Guild Contact

He hasn't yet asked/learned her name (bad habit of his), but Darcy is a surgeon on the Guild's payroll. He contacted her when he found himself feeling "helpful" in a bit of a situation. She's competent, very attractive, and got the job done. Any more has yet to be discerned.

Emery Donnovan — Acquaintance

Dane was her "getaway bike" when Emery was being chased by the cops after a little (nbd) arson. She seems shady and flirty, which is usually cool.

Evening Cadieux — Almost Victim

A rabbit stumbled into the wolf's jaws. Eve was unfortunate enough to happen upon Dane while he was in the midst of some bloody Guild business. He had a good, fun time reveling in her fear and threatening her. However, after being discomforted himself by her very nature (and perhaps taking some uncharacteristic sympathy in her relationship with her sister), he let her go. A little disgusted with himself and content with never seeking her out again. [break][break]

They crossed paths again some time later when Dane was beat-up bad over the recent/raw loss of his mother. For reasons absolutely unfathomable to him, Evening actually extended comfort.

Gemma Gatsby — Childhood Friend

Dane was seven years old when he first met the Gatsby girls and grew up torturing and being tortured by them. Nowadays, they're probably the only two people left in his life who he'd go absolutely feral for. While he wouldn't exactly consider himself loyal to the Guild, he might consider himself loyal to them. He loves them a lot (even if most of the time, they're all trying their damnedest to piss each other off). They're strong women; not only would he want them in his corner for a fight but they're two of the very few individuals that he'd back himself without needing a real reason to. [break][break]

They are also 100% responsible for his taste in women (you don't go through puberty being swung on by feisty girls without growing to like it just a bit). But, despite whatever teasing or games he occasionally plays, he would never make an honest move on either of them. Not only because he "likes having his hands and other, important appendages" but because he knows (and has always known) he is way too "loser boy" for them. Not to mention, Gem's always been sort of unofficially his brother's girl. While Dane would have considered all of Dino's girlfriends/ex-girlfriends pretty much "fair game" growing up, Gem was never an option to be considered (though, if you asked him, Dino was much too "loser boy" for Gem, too).

Genesis Donovan — Fellow Guild + (Maybe) Friend

Genie isn't only a fellow Guild member, but a fellow "child-made-weapon". Dane killed her father and she sought him out to (maybe) get a little closure about the whole thing. Though he was suspecting the conversation/Q&A about the whole thing to be a super buzz-kill, he rather enjoyed their interaction. They did shots. Genie loosened up a bit. They swapped some lore about one another and even some jokes! [break][break]

Dane wouldn't exactly consider her a friend, but he'd probably show up for her in a rather genuine capacity if she ever asked him to. And, of course, if she were to ever desire a "friend" for the night... Dude would very likely make himself available.

Jason Sharpe — Stranger

A dead guy Dane happened upon who ended up not being so dead. Was covered in wounds (and older scars). Pretty chill in the face of death. Which was all pretty interesting to Dane. He got him to a Guild surgeon and the pair saw him through the night.

Katrina Wells — Acquaintance

Katrina's a young, sweet girl who felt compelled to take Dane's number off the bathroom wall of a bar and text him. Yikes. He met with her, fully expecting a night of fun, but was sorely disappointed to find her a bit too young and innocent for his tastes. Then he decided to take it upon himself to teach her to be smarter when it comes to strangers.

Maddison Lancaster — Neighbor + Life-Saver

Maddie lives in the same apartment building as Dane. They've shared some passing pleasantries and he thinks of her as a nice, fairly normal (and of course, pretty) girl. When he got particularly messed up one night, he climbed up to her balcony to see if she could help his tiny little problem of bleeding out. [break][break]

He survived the night! He's sure Maddie has questions, or at the very least saw some questionable shit when she was cleaning his apartment, but... it hasn't come up yet. Which means, to some extent, he can trust her. She's pretty cool in his books. He'd definitely be far too pleased were she to knock on his door in the middle of the night.

Mason Lancaster — Acquaintance + Disliked

Maddie's paramedic brother who came over (at Maddie's beckoning) to assist with Dane's little "bleeding out" problem. Immediately, Dane decided he didn't like him and, should they meet again (perhaps when Dane is in a better state), he likely won't hesitate to try and rile him up, push his buttons, and/or start a fight.

Noah St Cloud — Friend, Maybe

Dane currently knows him as "Nick". This guy's pretty cool. He stitched Dane up after he got a nasty slice during his failed pursuit of a Guild defector. He's entertaining and is totally down with murder apparently. Definitely big pluses in Dane's book. They've exchanged numbers and Nick knows Dane's a hunter (and is pretty much okay with that), so Dane wouldn't hesitate to call him up if he needed some more medical assistance or maybe even for a night of drinking/chaos.

INACTIVE CHARACTERS

Atticus Hare — Acquaintance

Atticus almost ran Dane over with his car outside of a McDonald's. Friendly as always, Dane entered his vehicle without asking and the pair were off to a bar to find some trouble! Assumed: Atticus and Dane got along alright for the most part. Enjoyed a night of picking fights and getting roughed up. Dane would probably be pleased to run into him again but wouldn't try and seek him out on a whim. They didn't exchange contact information or anything of that sort.

Ethan Rivers — Guild Contact

Ethan's an attorney who was sent by the Guild to bounce Dane from lock-up when his dog bit a dude. Already, Dane has the irrepressible urge to get under this guy's skin. So far, Ethan seems slow to goad, so... boo... he may have to ramp up the Annoyance a notch.

Dane sees Grace as the most level-headed and respectable of them all. She's a little less fun than Gemma and a little (a lot) less likely to put up with his shit, but she's undoubtedly the one that "wears the britches" in his eyes. [break][break]

She abandoned him at probably the worst/lowest time in his life.

Mattis Fox — Acquaintance

A sweet, helpful soul. So cute and benevolent. She picked him up from the sidewalk after he got busted up during a (completely one-sided) bar fight. Fed him, gave him more booze, then invited him home with her. Assumed: Mattis was a little too chatty and reserved for Dane's usual tastes. Very flip-floppy. Did she take him home to sleep with him or not?? He tried winning the night in her bed but she just kept talking. A little too boozed and beaten up anyway, Dane ended up passing out on her couch mid-conversation. She covered him up (aww) and he woke/slipped out in the middle of the night. They did exchange numbers and Dane would probably call her if he needed some medical help in a pinch.

Mayvis Falcon — Acquaintance + Fellow Guild + Disliked

A snobby, rich girl with a bobcat for a pet. They definitely got off on the wrong foot. While Dane tends to like dangerous women, Mayvis is something else. Even discovering that they're both Guild members didn't help smooth things over. Just to get away from her, Dane agreed to a hunting mission together and told her that he'd give her a call/set up an assignment for them later that night that they met. Assumed: He did not.

Osha Moore — Acquaintance

A Good Samaritan. Miss Taekwondo. Osha intervened in Dane's Guild business (annoying), helped his target get away (super annoying), and also very nearly kicked Dane's ass (awesome). Dane will punch a girl, he doesn't care. It's on sight Osha. Mad respect tho.

Talin Lavigne — Stranger + Hot

They didn't really get to know each other. Talin came across Dane while he was beaten up from a bad bar fight. Assumed: She was cautious, didn't like his vibes, and left him to sleep it off in the trash. She was very pretty though (and seemed like a bit of a bad bitch). Dane has thought about slipping into her bar (when he's not busted up) to try and shoot his shot/make a better impression.

NPCs/ADOPTABLES

Antonio Wayland — Shitty Old Man + Loathed

The Warden of the Guild and Dane's father. They openly loathe each other and Antonio hardly hesitates to punish his son when he acts out. Dane swings violently between wanting nothing more than to dig the eyes from his father's sockets and wanting him to notice him. To be worthy of even the man's anger is a feat he's never been able to accomplish.

Jace "Wolfhound" King — Fellow Guild

Wolfhound was basically Dane's replacement partner when Dino died. Outwardly, he's a very well-put-together man. Solid, smart, smooth, and polite. Sensible and charming. Everything and more Antonio Wayland wished to cultivate in his sons. He was only saddled with Dane for a little while before being basically "promoted" from working with him. Which was all well and good because he and Dane fucking hated each other. [break][break]

Wolfhound is a little better than Dane at pretty much... everything. He's more attractive, a bit more charming and smooth, a hair more talented in a fight, etc. The list goes on. And Dane's father likes and trusts Wolfhound a whole lot more than him (which isn't necessarily an impressive feat). The pair have a snarky hate for each other that's veiled (thinly and poorly) by half-assed, sarcastic politeness. They can work well together and have had their moments of shining competence when teamed up, they just... butt heads and enjoy despising one another. Wolfhound knows how to prod Dane in just a way to quickly and explosively rile him up and Dane thinks of him as little more than Antonio's boot-licker. Also thinks his whole "charming, obedient, smooth, sensible guy" thing is a huge façade; knows he's a lot more cunning and devious than he lets on. [break][break]

Dane is fairly certain that it'll be Wolfhound who Antonio will trust to run the Wayland faction after him now that Dino's gone. And it's always Wolfhound that his father sends to put Dane in his place when he goes too far.

Mary Kate Lisbeth — Ex-Girlfriend + Respected

Dane started seeing MK very shortly after moving to Los Eurosia. Their relationship started off as a means to get his hands on her Sector files but became, on his part, something a little more genuine along the way. Not too long ago, he discovered that she was actually using him, too! They had a... bit of a scuffle... but ultimately, he didn't threaten or kill her. He didn't even pass on to the Guild or his father what she'd been getting up to. He hasn't reached out to her or heard from her at all since their little "break-up". As much as he maybe should hate her, he doesn't. He still likes her and even respects her for what she did to him. It must have taken a lot of resolve to fool someone she knew was dangerous, after all.

Mona Wayland — Mother + Deceased

Dane's one of the biggest, ole sappiest mama's boys you'll ever meet. His mother was the best, brightest person in his life, no contest. She loved him without fear of who he was and he cherished that. He invested a lot of himself — the more vulnerable and "human" parts of him — in her, almost in a way to keep them safe. She, and she alone, watched over the best of him. As her baby bear, he'd do anything for his mama. Unfortunately, she was killed by a rival hunting upstart not too long ago. A big piece of him is lost and missing with her gone and he's yet to really, really admit/face that.

Sarah "Rabbit" Klein — Guild Contact

Sarah, or "Rabbit", is a guild contact that Dane very quickly made in Los Eurosia because she's Gifted with regenerative and healing abilities. He's dragged himself to her with one foot in the grave a half-dozen times already. Sarah is reluctantly part of the Guild, allied with them out of force more than choice. She was a hunting target at one point in time but was spared because they could use her. [break][break]

She hates Dane. It's his fault, of course. He really enjoys riling her up and pushing her boundaries. She's his little ice-queen that he's determined to see melt eventually. Enjoys getting a rise out of her in any way he can. She's so determined not to give him a reaction and he loves forcing cracks in that cold carapace of hers. He suspects that one day he'll drag himself to her and she'll finally let him bleed out and refuse to help him. And he'll be very proud of her when the time comes.

Silene Matthews — Ex-Fling + Victim

Dane found out she was Gifted through MK and took a little interest. Her ability was similar to pyrokinesis and he thought to himself "that's kinda hot", looked her up and thought "she's kinda hot", then started the prowl. Silene had a girlfriend, which Dane didn't mind, especially since a bit of forward flirting uncovered a shared interest and a marked lack of faithfulness on Silene's part. Dane was always willing to be a person she reached for when her girlfriend was being a bit too toxic and she wanted revenge. They would club together, get wasted, and talk very little about themselves — all good points in Dane's books. She didn't care to know what he did for a living so he never had to bother with straightening out a backstory for her. [break][break]

Unfortunately, Antonio found out about this little dalliance and had Dane kill her.

Yelena Morse — Fellow Guild + Ex-Girlfriend

Yelena and Dane actually have a history. She's been a part of the Guild for a long time and is a formidable hunter. He doesn't have to do any "pretending" when he's with her. They were briefly a thing — not quite dating but very involved nonetheless — many years ago. But then Dane got her sister killed on a mission (it really was an accident but he was being reckless) and now she really, really hates him. Has even tried killing him a few times! That doesn't stop the sparks from flying when they come across each other or seek one another out. They throw insults, exchange blows, maybe make out a little, and then it kinda just goes from there. Yelena hates herself for it everytime and really takes it out on him, which Dane enjoys.

BRIDGET LACEY — Friend + Colleague

Luck and Bridget both work for the Sector and have been thrown on a few of the same cases together in the past. She's also a friend of Tawny's and a work acquaintance of Nate's. Recently, they've gotten to know one another a little better and Luck considers them friends. They actually have some shared interests and similar stomping grounds — both of which make for easy conversation and great stories to swap. She reminds him of home (in better ways than he usually remembers home).

CHARLOTTE LEWIS — Friendly Acquaintance

Luck was sent Charlotte's way by a neighbor in his apartment complex to take a look at her plumbing. They managed through an awkward "strangers helping strangers" sort of situation without much hitch, then ran into each other again while more comfortably drunk. Karaoke ensued!

DARIUS SAEED — Colleague

Darius works for the Sector but Luck doesn't know a whole lot about him, other than he's a telepath and that he and Bridget share some history. He's quite possibly the most attractive man he has ever seen in-person but that's irrelevant to anything. Huge hair envy. Wishes he could pull of "big hoop" earrings like he can.

FELICITY EVERETTE — Friend of a Friend

At the bar, Luck recognized Felicity from the many pictures of her in Tawny's phone. She seems very nice and he's seen the evidence that she can be quite fun and wild. But they didn't quite click in the bar — whether that was due to Luck's drunkenness or other differences is yet to be seen.

JAMES CLARK — Acquaintance + Sector Fellow

It's simple and it's complicated. James was stricken a very shitty blow by the Sector and Luck sympathizes with that. But... he's also been given the task of making sure James "stays away" from his family (whom Luck has been keeping tabs on for years). At the moment, Luck's simply trying to build some sort of friendly rapport with the man and he's had a bit of success (James joined the Sector's first softball game!). But... he knows it's going to be a tricky situation to handle at some point.

KAT ORLEA-KUBIK — Friend + Found Family

Kat was a package deal with Nate from the very, very beginning. Luck has always been grateful that the two are such great friends and that Nate has always had as much of a someone in her as he had in him. Most especially in those tough moments where Luck might have failed to be there for him (or else might have been the reason for tough moments). And Luck considers Kat to be a close friend to himself as well. One of the very few people who actually know-knows him. And being a part of her kids lives, for the entirety of them so far, has been really good for him. [break][break]

On the downside, Kat possesses the gift of empathy. The same gift as Luck and a great source of turmoil and self-repression during the first half of his life. It can sometimes be a bit rankling — especially when he isn't feeling "good" — that she can read him and his emotions in the exact way he always feared everyone could when he was a kid/young adult. Luck has a strange, long-ingrained relationship with feeling "transparent". It took years after realizing/understanding his Gift that he unlearned a lot of the behavior associated with it. And with Kat... he is transparent. And that can sometimes nudge him the wrong way.

NAOMI GARCIA — Friend + Colleague

Luck and Naomi have known each other for about five years. More TBD.

NATHANIEL COLLINS — Ex + Best Friend   ( ♫ )

Nate is Luck's ex. They've been together for the past ten years and Luck would credit who he is today (at least the good, undeniably better bits) largely to him. In light of their recent split, things are a bit difficult. Luck isn't quite certain yet how he is supposed to navigate what's left of them; unsure what they are in the aftermath. What he even wants them to be. Are they friends still? Can he still text him? Or does that make it more difficult? Lots of unknowns there. [break][break]

But, regardless, Luck would still show up for Nate were he to need him in any way. Obviously. Of course he would. Despite things being a bit twisted, there's still care and feelings there. Nate's always been his best friend before anything else (and he hopes that splitting up doesn't really change that). But he just doesn't know. He's never been "here" before. He supposes he simply wants the best for him (even if this whole space thing makes it clear that that's not him).

TAWNY VOKES — Friend + Colleague + Confidant

Luck and Tawny have been friends since Tawny started working at the Sector. They're in the same department and felt each other out fairly quickly in the beginning. They get along well, trust each other, and also share some grief/bitches about how the Sector operates. After Luck's split with his long-term boyfriend, he found himself with more time on his hands and fewer people to pal around with — so they've recently been hanging out a lot more. Really, they share a lot of confidence with one another and can have conversations (usually while drinking) that they might not have so easily with someone else. There's a lot of love there, even if they don't always get along.

GRIFFIN BANKS — Texted Stranger

Luck texted Griffin by mistake one drunken night. What ensued was entertaining but, after Luck accidentally PayPal'ed him $270 instead of $20, Griffin ghosted.

WALTER BELL — Acquaintance + Sector Case

Luck was assigned Walter's file through work. He knows quite a bit about the boy's more troubled past and feels the Sector has sort of mishandled/fumbled the ball a bit in his case. He would like to make sure he's adjusted well to his new life in Los Eurosia and, for obvious reasons, is concerned about his emotional constitution.

NPCs/ADOPTABLES

JEFF AYERS — Nadia's BF + Aimee's NPC

Jeff is Nadia's boyfriend of 20+ years. Luck has always liked and respected him. During the seven months he spent in Harmony, the pair worked together a lot around the community (fixing, building, animal care, etc.), and it was always important to Luck that Jeff thought well of him. It still is.

NADIA COLLINS — Nate's Sister + Aimee's NPC

Nadia is Nate's older sister and she sort of took Luck under the same wing both during the seven months he spent in Harmony and in the years that followed. Having no family otherwise, Luck was always very appreciative of the care/affection she showed him. She had no obligation to but she did so freely. He loves her a great deal and holds her in very high regard. Even after settling in Los Eurosia, the boys still visited Harmony and spent many holidays there. Luck isn't sure whether or not he'll be invited around anymore (or, if he is, whether the "polite thing" to do would be to pretend he couldn't attend) and the idea of that is lowkey devastating.

Gravel kicked high and furious, thunderstorm eyes. The only one whose ever made sense and the only good ink in his skin. All of his best whiskey-and-moon-drunk nights. But she's a dreamer and he's a stayer. Maybe he knew that the whole time, just couldn't face it until she made him let her go.

ABIGAIL KREHL — Niece

Marianne's eight-year old daughter. Gritty and tough. Looks and acts just like Marianne did as a little girl. Has only-child problems (a ranch can be a lonely place for a single kid). Michael and her have always been tight. He has taught her plenty of things (and tricks) that end up getting her in trouble with her mom. And she, in turn, gets him in trouble plenty with both her mom and his mom. Abigail can sometimes be like his shadow. And he thinks she's a really great kiddo — smart, funny, and able to fall in the dirt and not cry about it. She wears his Guild tattoo in his place.

AMELIE VAEL — Mother

The Vael matriarch. Really, really, really wears the pants in the house. Quietly very funny. Open and loud with her opinions and judgments. Caring and fussing but in a distinctly tough-love, no-argument way. While Howard is considered the "head" of the Vael ranch, really, Amelie gets a lot of say and weight in what goes on and Howard does lean on her quite heavily in some areas. Michael was always the roughest kid on her nerves and patience. Also the only one she couldn't ever mend when he got hurt/broken. He's responsible for most of her gray hairs and, once or twice, may have caused her to bust a blood vessel in the face from frustration.

Colton Lowe — Neighbor + Deceased

Howard Vael — Father

The Vael patriarch. Probably the softest Vael of his lineage, tbh. Kinda has a big, bleeding heart and, while he certainly can put his foot down and be firm when demanded, most of his bark/bite is saved for business and he can be a bit of a gush with his family and behind closed doors. Probably has a bit of a reputation as being a little too "soft-handed" for a Vael. And probably struggles with guilt about how things have turned out, because... well... his father, his grandfather, and every Vael before them, would have probably burned the homestead to the ground and gone down kicking and cussing before letting things come to pass the way they have. Loves his wife, his children, and his granddaughter. Michael gets in his face a lot, usually wishing he was tougher, and Howard kind of balks with his youngest son — because, with Michael's negation, he is the only person he can never really feel out or clock what he's thinking.

Marianne Krehl — Sister

Warner Krehl — Brother-in-Law

A city boy "turned country" when he met Marianne. Was very much picked on by both Michael and Daniel in the beginning of their relationship. But he's grown into his own and the boys all get along fine (most days). He's Abigail's father but... she's more likely to turn to her uncles for anything... and Warner can feel that. Makes the occasional fuss about it. He's "doing his best" dealing with Marianne and being there for her after the Guild (and her killing of Colton Lowe), but... it's all very hard. He doesn't really have the stomach or heart for that kind of thing. So it's been hard on him as well. He sometimes struggles with feeling like an outsider on the ranch even after so long. The only "not blood".

Kevin Wolski — Ex-Husband + Estranged

Sadie would be the first to tell anyone that Kev's a perfect man, husband, and father. She really did have to force his hand when it came to divorce and, had the event with their daughter not happened, she doesn't doubt that he would have never given up on her or "them" (even as awful as she was to him in the end). He's just Good like that. Hardworking, communicative, patient, and all-around a Super Pleasant Guy™. Toward the end of things, she began throwing the word "perfect" around like it was an insult and he absolutely hated it. But still, he never retaliated in the way she wanted. Was never nasty to her back. Frustrated, but never nasty.

Kiara Lerwick — Sister + Estranged

The youngest of the Lerwick girls, Kiara is probably the sibling that Sadie always got along with the most. Probably because Kiara is the least put-together of them all. Spunky with tons of gremlin-energy. But also a sensitive cry-baby prone to spiraling. Sadie adores her to pieces and pieces. Of all of her immediate family, Kiara is the only one who hasn't shut her out completely. They share the occasional chat, usually on birthdays.
