I. ROGER MCCREADY
HOMESTEAD / HATTIE'S HAVEN - - -
It's an older house that his grandparents have owned for most of their lives, though it's received a number of renovations throughout the years. Roger's never been one for interior decorating; things would be unchanged from when his grandparents were alive if it weren't for his ex-fiancé, Talin, living with him for a couple of years. He left it all to her and she took it upon herself to make the place much more modern feeling. Decorating has been mostly untouched since her moving out and one can see evidence of her living there still; things like some of her clothes, shoes, and pictures that Roger's never bothered to take down or put away. He does try to keep the place moderately clean (barring the mudroom and laundry room), and it helps that he seems to hardly ever be inside except to fall face-down into bed and pass out. But it's always in need of a bit of dusting and him and the dogs are always tracking in mud.
Roger has three extra bedrooms in his home and a knack for taking in strays. There's been a number of drifters he's offered a job on the ranch and a room in his house while they get their feet back under them.
The piece of land that is Hattie's Haven is 1/2 mile by 1/2 mile — 160 acres. The house sits on a moderate piece of well-kept lawn with a very large garden but the rest consists of mostly open pasture, trees, and a bit of crop-ground with a couple ponds, various stables, pens, and barns, as well as a riding arena and a bunkhouse where the majority of tools and tack is kept. The largest and nicest of the barns is what functions as Roger's medical clinic. Current residents of the farm consist of a great number of chickens and roosters, some donkeys, goats, a couple of cows, a half-dozen horses, and one very mean alpaca. Hattie's Haven offers boarding and medical services for large animals. They also take in surrendered animals for rehoming/rehabilitation, offer riding/roping lessons, and has three certified therapy horses.
PETS - - -
- TWYLA: Black lab, female. Roger's baby girl. He's had her since she was a pup. Smart as a whip and very intuitive. She's eight years old and has slowed down a lot. Gotten a little grumpy and lazy in her old age. Will often weigh if something is worth reacting to and decide to just plop back down. But she's never not at Roger's side. Talin always joked he loved Twyla more than her and since she left, Twyla's been allowed to sleep in the bed. Talin throws a fit every time she comes over to spend the night.
- ZIRA & CORNELIUS: The new blood. Sibling cattle dogs, approximately 1 year old. Both very smart and well-trained but still young and can get a bit overeager and excitable. Love to be put to work.
- GINNY, OPHELIA, and URSULA: Roger's three certified therapy horses, all female. They were surrendered to Hattie's Haven on the verge of death from neglect and starvation. Roger nursed them back to health and now they're super spoiled. Always want to be together. Can get pushy when they don't get their way but are generally very gentle. Ginny's the smallest and most docile of the three. Ursula's the leader of the pack and reserved only for more experienced riders. She loves to nip at hair.
