LOOKING FOR EX-LOVER
"one more try, we can only hang on for so long
someone's always somewhere in the middle"
Hey! So I'm making a new character, Luck Harris! While progress is slow (and I'll be making him regardless if there's any interest in this ad or not), I figured.... I'd see what might come of posting this prematurely.
One thing I have decided for Luck is that he's fairly fresh out of a long relationship. I thought to myself at work last night/this morning — while listening to a playlist that was heavy with artists like Wet, Alessia Cara, Astrid.... you get it — "Damn, I'd really like to actually RP this shit". So, here I am... seeing if anyone else is maybe interested in playing "shit" like this.
Since Luck is a WIP and I've only got a general idea/backbone of everything in mind, most of this is extremely flexible! Really, one reason I wanted to post this prematurely, is because putting two heads together and knocking some suggestions/ideas around might help me build his character faster/better than I might have originally! Nonetheless, here is a bit of what I'm thinking —
Your character is Luck's ex. This can be an existing character (if you can make it work) or a new character. Can be a girlfriend or a boyfriend (he's bisexual and I have no preference one way or the other). I do kind of like the idea that maybe they were even engaged? Maybe engaged for a while? Maybe they weren't particularly eager to actually plan or commit to the wedding (almost as if they couldn't really imagine it??) Maybe they just got engaged because "it's what you do" after so long. Friends eventually stopped asking about when the wedding was gonna be and stopped being excited about it because they'd always kinda laugh it off and "haha idk".
But they could just have been long-term boyfriends/girlfriends, if fiancees don't float ya boat.
I've got Luck's age down right now as 34 but I'm willing to bump this up or down a few years if needed. In my head, they've been together a whole 10 years or so, but I'd be willing to go as low as 5 years if desired. I just like the idea of it being so long (and them having been together since their early twenties), just for that added.... almost.... bitterness of having "wasted" such a huge chunk of time/so many years with one another. And, getting together so young, I think it'd be almost like their identities are very much wrapped up/owed to one another, if that makes sense. Surely they would have to wonder who they'd be if they hadn't gotten together or stayed together so long. That kinda thing.
As for "the reason" for the split. It could be something as simple as.... maybe they just grew bored with one another? Maybe one of them, or both of them, stopped putting in a whole lot of effort and let the romance/spark die? And eventually, they sort of came to a mutual indifference and decided they should call it quits? Or maybe one of them just became so frustrated and the other so apathetic that it sort of forced a snap? If we wanted to be more dramatic, we could always sprinkle in some infidelity (on either Luck or your character's part)? Could even be something like one of them wanting to have kids and the other not? Really, this is definitely open for suggestions/ideas! If you have something you'd like to toss around, I'm all ears!
Possible interactions/ideas/thread potential!
- I imagine when they split that one of them moved out of the apartment they've shared forever and the other stayed. But whoever stayed, perhaps they can't afford the rent alone? Or maybe they've decided it would be better/healthier for them to get their own, new place, instead of living where there are so many memories. Maybe the pair get together to go through stuff/help one another box things up/move out, just so there are no arguments later if "something important" ends up thrown away. Going through shared stuff, deciding if either of them wants it/who gets it, reminiscing, maybe going back and forth between some lighthearted laughing/remembering and irritation/frustration, etc. etc.
- I also imagine they share groups of friends! So there could be instances where they are together in groups, sort of trying to be natural/cool/"not a big deal" while everyone kinda gives them the occasional side eye and whatnot. Bar outings. Karen's baby shower. Matt's BBQ. That kinda thing. Their friends being like "yeah, we invited you both, is that gonna be a problem?" And them maybe making things tense/awkward every once in awhile by being catty or having little arguments like the old couple they are/were lmao. The friends just not wanting to take sides, lol.
- Shared custody of a pet?
- They're still one another's emergency contact? So maybe something happens to one of them and the other shows up?
- Navigating the dating world after so long being with one person is probably hard. Maybe when a date falls through or doesn't go how they wanted it to, they sort of shamefully hook up/crawl back to one another?
- Something blows up big in one or the other's life. Death in the family or something. And they don't really know who else to reach out to but them. Late night phone call or just showing up on the other person's stoop, broken. And the other person, fully expecting another fight maybe, just crumbling at the sight of them and letting them be there for them as they normally would?
Really, the potential here is endless! Basically what I'm hoping for is for them to kinda struggle with finding themselves without the other! It would probably be very hard after being together for so long! They would have been best friends at some point and for a very long time! Maybe they still do consider one another like their best friend? The person who knows the most about them. Maybe they see-saw between wanting to get back together and remembering why they broke up? Occasionally they're on the same page, but most of the time not? Maybe one of them makes the occasional, grand romantic gesture to try and prove they can still be that person? Maybe it works for a while and then it doesn't? Maybe they end up back together or maybe they end up being happy for one another in new lives and can manage to remain friends? Maybe it's easier some days (and harder other days) to see them with someone else, hear news about someone else, that sort of thing. Maybe Luck gets so desperate one day/night after a spell of "wanting to get back together" that he uses his Gift one night and whispers "you love me again" — immediate blow-up/regret/shame/massive breach of trust/fight, wow!
The only thing I'm not hoping for, is for a character to be created solely for this hook! It can be a new character, of course, but I would really love to see this character flesh themselves out outside of interactions with Luck! Make relationships and have other plots with other characters, too! Make friends that Luck can then meet and feel out, that kinda thing!
This is kind of a really... slapped-together ad, but I think it gets the idea down. If anyone is interested at all, I'm totally open for hashing out details and figuring stuff out together! Feel free to reply to this thread or send me a message on Discord!
