[attr="class","Honeylightpostlyric"]I hope that one day[break]things will change
[attr="class","Honeylightpostingbox"]
She was in the city again.[break][break]
Not an alarming thing, without context. Most people would see her on the street and think nothing of it. Just a face in the crowd, a girl going about her business… The thought of such a thing warmed her, like sunlit syrup on pancakes.[break][break]
What they didn’t know was that Honey was effectively exiled from the area. Banned from coming too close to civilisation for something she couldn’t control. She liked to argue against this fact and say she could usually feel the problem building before it happened, like a sneeze. Could rush for cover the way one might rush for a tissue. But she was wholly unconvincing and every attempt was met with the order to stay. Home.[break][break]
A girl gets restless though, and full of ideas. And so, here she was again. Going where she shouldn’t. Breaking the rules. She wondered if this was what taking drugs was like; it was weirdly addictive, this fear-excitement.[break][break]
This particular trip was going surprisingly well. No injuries, and she’d even gotten herself a seat in a café! Settled at a table where she could eagerly observe the other customers and watch what they were doing and listen to what they were talking about without them sparing a glance in her direction. She was practically invisible. She didn’t know why the Sector worried so much. If she shifted involuntarily, she doubted anyone would notice it in the time it took her to shift right back into her human form.[break][break]
But then a phone started ringing.[break][break]
It was on the table right next to hers. The person who it belonged to had presumably left it there while they went to the restroom or perhaps to the counter to buy themselves another drink – Honey wasn’t sure, she couldn’t see them either way. And though she had a rough understanding that it wasn’t really socially acceptable to touch things that belonged to other people, the other customers were starting to turn their heads in her direction. Seeking the disturbance. Finding her.[break][break]
The phone kept ringing and people kept looking –[break][break]
She panicked. She answered the phone.[break][break]
“Hello?”[break][break]
“CONGRATULATIONS!” The cheer was full of energy and blasted through the speaker at such a volume that Honey almost dropped the device in her haste to yank it away from her ear. The voice rattled on without pausing, causing her to miss a fair portion of their introduction while she gathered the nerve to bring the phone within hearing distance again.[break][break]
“… which means you’ve won two-hundred dollars!”[break][break]
“Oh,” was all Honey could think to say, until it fully registered what the voice was telling her. “Oh wow, that’s great news!” The phone owner would be so excited! And so happy that Honey had answered the call for them.[break][break]
“All we need is the following bank details–”[break][break]
“Oh, uh–” Her stomach flipped, her wide-eyed stare flickering around the room but finding no allies. What should she do? She didn’t want the owner to miss out on their prize, but she couldn’t pretend to be them, especially not when she didn’t have the details the caller needed. And wouldn't that be some kind of identity theft? She sucked in a breath. “Sorry, can I, um, give you mine? To be honest, this isn’t my phone, so I don’t know this person’s details, but maybe could you take mine as a placeholder and then swap it for theirs when they come back…? Please?”[break][break]
There was a pregnant pause on the other end of the line. Were they revoking the prize because it wasn’t the phone owner who answered? Did Honey hang up? “Hel–?”[break][break]
“That’s completely fine!” The voice returned in full cheer as if nothing had happened. “And very kind of you to do that for your friend, miss. Can you start by giving me your account number?”[break][break]
Honey nodded, prepared to do exactly that, except at that moment a shadow fell over her. Confused, she glanced up. Then bolted to her feet, her thigh hitting the table and her eyes wide as she recognised the person whose phone she was currently using. “I wasn’t trying to steal your prize!”[break][break]
OOC: do whatever! If you’d rather your character wasn’t the one who left their phone at a table, they could simply be nearby and see Honey get yelled at by the phone owner, and decide to either step in or approach her after they’re gone.[break][break]
