MASON ELI LANCASTER
"Black ocean, cold and dark
I am the hungry shark, fast and merciless
But the only girl that could talk to him just couldn't swim
Tell me what's worse than this"

But the only girl that could talk to him just couldn't swim
Tell me what's worse than this"

POWERS: superhuman senses and reflexesMason learned when he was very young that he could see, hear, and smell things that other people could not. It was normal to him, to be able to see something in great detail that his parents or sister couldn’t see at all. His parents couldn’t whisper to each other without him hearing, and there was a lot that he heard or saw that he wished he didn’t. It took him longer to realize that he also reacted more quickly to his environment. If someone threw something, he would move to avoid being hit. At first, he thought this was just because his senses were so heightened, but eventually he realized it was more than that.
THE LOOKS
HEIGHT: 5’11
WEIGHT: 160 lbs
HAIR COLOR: Brown
EYE COLOR: Blue
FACE CLAIM: Richard Harmon
OVERALL APPEARANCE:
Mason is on the taller side of average. He looks slender for a fire fighter, though he is more muscular than he appears at first glance. When he's not working, he tends to wear jeans, a t-shirt or button down shirt, and maybe a zip up hoodie if it's chilly enough outside. He keeps his hair a bit long and shaggy, and he doesn't shave his face on his days off so he usually has a bit of stubble. Days he works, he has to keep his face clean shaven. That is probably the thing he dislikes most about his job, because he thinks he looks like too baby faced when he doesn't have facial hair.

OVERALL PERSONALITY:
Mason is a work-a-holic. Like most firefighters, he is scheduled for a 24 hour shift every three days, but it is not unusual for him to work overtime shifts, usually working at least one or two extra shifts per week. When he’s off, he goes to the gym, visits with his sister or friends, and makes sure his mom is doing alright. He keeps himself pretty busy between work and family, and rarely even thinks about dating anyone, though his best friend Tomas keeps trying to get him to go out more.
Mason is quick to anger, especially when it comes to kids or vulnerable people being hurt or taken advantage of. He has a tendency to go to the gym to work out his anger, so he is there somewhat frequently.
BACKGROUND
HOMETOWN Los Eurosia
FAMILY:
Elijah Lancaster - father of Mason and Maddie. He was loud, angry, and an alcoholic. He would frequently yell at the kids and his wife. Mason could always hear when things were starting to escalate and would attempt to shield his sister from seeing anything more violent.
Miranda Lancaster - mother of Mason and Maddie. She is an alcoholic, and she was negligent to them when they were children. She claims that she was trying her best, and that their father was the reason why she was such a bad mom. She now lives with Mason.
Maddison Lancaster - Mason’s little sister. They aren't too far apart in age, and while they did have their fair share of sibling arguments, they have always been close. Maddie tried to keep Mason out of trouble when they were kids and he would pick on other kids. As adults, they are still very close, but they don’t see each other as often due to their mother living with Mason now.
PETS: Mason has one dog, Max. Max is a pitbull, about 5 years old. Mason got Max when he was found in the house of a deceased patient. The owner had no next of kin, and the shelter they contacted advised that due to his breed, they wouldn’t take him, so Mason ended up bringing the dog home. Now he can’t imagine not having Max.
HISTORY:
Growing up, Mason was the protector. He felt like he had to keep his sister away from the harsher realities of their parents' dysfunction. He would distract her, or bring her out with himself and his friends instead of leaving her home when he went out. As they got older, he tried to keep them out of the house more than being home.
With everything that he heard and saw at home, Mason was angry. He kept it bottled up and didn’t talk about it. He thought it would be worse to tell anyone. Instead, he lashed out. He would use the fact that he had better senses and reflexes than other kids to bully and provoke them. He would make kids so mad they would try to punch him, then he would duck out of the way before they made contact. He wasn’t above fighting, but he wasn’t a big kid and he didn’t hit very hard. The only thing that kept him from losing was having such fast reflexes. Maddie didn’t like it when Mason and his friend Tomas would bully the other kids, and always begged them to stop. One day, she started blocking Mason’s abilities. He found out when a punch landed where it was intended, ending with a broken nose for him. Eventually, after his sister blocked him from using his gifts more and more often, he learned to stop lashing out at people who didn’t deserve it.
Mason and his friend Tomas both decided they wanted to do something more with their lives after high school. Mason wanted to get out of the East End, and to do better than his parents ever had. More than that, he wanted to make up for the little shit that he had been. He decided to apply for a sponsorship to go to the fire academy, and he was accepted. He was only 18 when he started, and he thought for sure he wouldn’t make it, but he was determined. He surprised himself, and more than just passing, he loved it. It gave him purpose. After a few years on the job, he also trained as a medic, and he can work on the fire truck or in an ambulance if he is needed there. Even when he’s in the fire truck, he can still give patients medical attention until the rescue arrives.
It was through work that Mason was recruited to Blackstorm. He thought he was subtle about using his gifts, but he dodged out of the way of a falling beam at a fire he was working and apparently someone noticed. As he was finishing up loading the equipment, he was approached and successfully recruited. He firmly believes that gifted people should not have to hide who they are and should not have to live in fear of being discovered. He is in a position that could help, being what most people consider a “hero”, though he really doesn’t think of himself as one. He’s just doing his job, to the best of his ability, which happens to be better than some others.
Recently, Mason made the decision to let his mother move in with him. He had the space, and it isn’t like he’s home every day anyway. She helps him take care of Max when he’s working, and this way he can make sure she is alright. He knows that she wasn’t a perfect mother by any means, but he’s willing to forgive her for some of the trauma of his childhood because he knows what his father was like. He did tell her that she has to get treatment and stop drinking if she wants to continue living with him, and he helped put her through a program. He knows that his sister isn’t likely to forgive their mom, and he isn’t going to force it. He does hope that they come to peace with each other at some point though.
