WELCOME TO LOS EUROSIA,
Amaia Devivi
"O'Death...Won't you spare me over til another year?"
BASICS
NAME: Amaia Devivi
AGE: 33
BIRTHDATE: November 2nd
PRONOUNS: She/Her
SEXUALITY: I have no idea at the moment, it's something I'd like to explore while rping
RELATIONSHIP STATUS: Single
OCCUPATION: Detective
NEIGHBORHOOD: The Heights
MEMBER GROUP: Gifted
POWERS:Amaia’s power is about Death.
Everyone has to face their demise sooner or later, but if Amaia is having a vision about your death then it means there is still a chance.
Amaia can have visions in different ways. But, no matter the way, visions always drain her energy. It is possible for visions to hurt her physically depending on the strength of the vision itself. Also, visions can lead her to places as if she is sleepwalking. These weaknesses can put her in danger.
Visions can be manipulated by mental powers or devices that can interfere with brain activity. Anything that can affect the psyche or brain activity can also affect her power, for example psychiatric meds or a brain tumour. How would her power be affected? Side effects may vary, but her power wouldn’t work properly meaning that she would have false visions.
Also, Amaia is vulnerable to anything that can affect a human being: she is just a human, so she is a mortal.
This power is NOT correlated to ghosts. Amaia cannot see or speak to ghosts. Her power is about preventing the deaths of people, not dealing with their ghosts.
Amaia cannot have visions about her own death.
Also, her visions have always a reason or purpose. Amaia would never have a vision without clues on how to help. And not being able to help can lead to negative consequences. There is a reason why she has a vision about a person but not another, even though it may not seem obvious. It’s not random. For example, Amaia has a vision of a stranger, she cannot save them, as a consequence this stranger won’t be able to save another person, so now two people are dead and their lives would have been important for something or someone later on if they had survived.
The POV of the visions can differ. Sometimes is in first person. Sometimes from the victim’s POV or the perpetrator’s. However, sometimes it can be from a third person prospective as if she is watching what’s happening from a witness, it is unclear who the “point of viewer” is in this instance.
Amaia doesn’t know who or what sends her these visions. Perhaps it is something/someone connected to her power, or maybe it is connected to her mother’s death and Amaia herself temporarily dying in the womb.
Amaia can have visions while sleeping. If this happens then the vision can have interferences from dreams like she is having a vision about someone on a street and all of a sudden she sees a pink elephant walking down the street. However, sometimes the interferences can be so similar to what is happening in the vision that it can be difficult to distinguish from what’s real and what’s not. Sometimes things out of the ordinary, like a pink elephant, can actually be a symbolism connected to the vision, but it takes painstakingly research to confirm such things.
It’s not always about people, she can have visions about anything that can die. One time she had a vision about a tree dying, which seemed inconsequential, but the death of that tree caused a series of unfortunate events.
If she has a vision about something then she must find a way to intervene and she can’t let someone else do the job for her because experience has shown her that it doesn’t work that way. If she is having the vision then it means that she is supposed to actively try to save the subjects in her visions, letting someone else handle it wouldn’t cut it. However, it doesn’t mean that she can’t have help.
However, direct intervention from Amaia doesn’t guarantee her visions won’t come true. Sometimes, Amaia may do the wrong thing or be too late.
If she is having a vision while sleeping then she would wake up tired as if she hasn’t slept at all. However, she can have a vision at any time, not only after going to sleep. If a vision is coming then it takes precedence about anything else. For example, she is walking down the street and all of a sudden she stops walking and looks like she is sleeping while standing up even if she is in the middle of the road. And this can happen at any moment, it doesn’t matter if she is safe or not.
About the “sleepwalking”. Let’s say that she is having a vision about someone being attacked in an alley. Amaia would walk there while still under the power’s influence, meaning that she wouldn’t be conscious. Sometimes she can regain consciousness before reaching her destination, and she can get lost.
The power can also hurt her. For example, she had a vision about someone getting stubbed in the ribs and the pain woke her up to a stabbing wound in her own stomach, the same wound that had happened in the vision. Even though self-preservation would kick in and try to wake Amelia up before it’s too late, injuries suffered during visions can be severe.
The power can give Amaia visions about events that can happen a day later or even years later. Meaning that she can have visions taking place at any moment, so it can be difficult to determine when a vision is taking place.
PS.: I would like to specify that this power will deal mostly with NPCs. Amaia would see another player’s character’s death only if plotted with the other player (and of course the character would be saved, it is implied that death can only occur with permission of the character’s player).
THE LOOKS
HEIGHT: 1.63 m
WEIGHT: 55 Kg
HAIR COLOR: Black
EYE COLOR: Brown
FACE CLAIM: Kristen Kreuk
OVERALL APPEARANCE: Amaia takes care of herself, however it is mostly for practical reasons. She knew what kind of career she wanted to pursue, so she has been working on herself with that in mind. She often goes to the gym and trains in self-defence combat and this of course affects her appearance. She has a small scar on her stomach caused by a vision.
INSIDE
LIKES: Coffee, Reading, Painting, Drawing
DISLIKES: Tea, Sweets, Arguing, Having to tell people about their upcoming death
STRENGTHS: Amaia's detective skills are her strongest strength. She can use her skills to extrapolate information and clues from visions, also she has the means to go after perpetrators if she has the evidence or catches the perpetrator red-handed. She is also brave, she is willing to put herself in danger in order to help anyone in need, especially if it's related to her visions because of the consequences if her visions come true.
WEAKNESSES: Her power is her biggest weakness because it can hurt her and put her in danger as described in her power section. Also, she tries to keep her power a secret, but Hunters might find out and start hunting her. She wouldn't know what would happen to her life if her power came out. Would people consider her a freak or a medium?
OVERALL PERSONALITY: Amaia has been affected by her power deeply. How could she not? Imagine having to go to someone and inform them of their upcoming death “Hi! I’m Amaia and I had a vision about your death, Mr. Stranger!”
A way of coping with her visions is drawing. She draws in order to put down what she sees in her visions and also to symbolically put it away from her mind. If she draws her visions in a sketchbook then she can close it and in a way put the vision aside for a while. It is essential for her mental well-being. Of course, her drawings are inevitably related to her power, how it makes her feel and all the negative consequences that come with it when she can’t stop the visions from coming true.
Amaia drawings are also about her mother, but those are private, like the lack of memories about her mother. She can’t remember or know her and that’s even worse than death.
About her mental health. At the beginning, she would anonymously call the police, informing them of when and where a crime was being committed. Unfortunately, she soon found out that delegating responsibility wasn’t working: she had to participate. Amaia still feels guilty for those people that she couldn’t help because she thought that letting professionals deal with it would be enough. Also, she thinks that she was being selfish, after all she wanted to keep her anonymity. This was a strong motivation for Amaia pursing a career as a Detective.
Amaia tries to keep her power anonymous, however zealous journalists are always around, so she has to keep a low profile and it can be very stressful considering that she has to act directly. The officers she worked as a consultant for kept her anonymity. Also, the people she has helped tend to keep her anonymity, after all they are very grateful.
Amaia doesn’t have family of friends, or at least she tries to keep her distance from them. Why? Her power, of course. What if being associated with her can put them in danger? What if her power has side effects, like marking for death the people closest to her? She has so much empathy for strangers, imagine how she must feel about people she loves.
Responsibility and a strong sense of duty, that’s what she feels towards the subjects of her visions. If she lets too many visions become true then the guilt would surely start eating her from the inside out until there is nothing left.
BACKGROUND
HOMETOWN: Los Eurosia
FAMILY: Christine (mother, deceased), Antonio (alive, 66 years old), no siblings
PETS: A black cat named Salem, it was a stray cat, but it kept getting in Amaia's apartment and made himself at home.
HISTORY:
Amaia’s first time dealing with death happened even before she was born.
Christine died while giving birth to her daughter, as a consequence Amaia died for a few moments while still in the womb.
Luckily, Amaia had a great support system. Her father, Antonio Devivi, was always there for his daughter, the same can be said about her other relatives and friends.
But one thing at a time.
Amaia cried almost every night when she was little. Antonio associated it with the death of her mother, although she was still too little to understand what was happening, he thought that Amaia was feeling that her connection to her mother had been severed forever.
But no, it was the power. Amaia was having horrible dreams. Imagine Antonio’s frustration when the doctors kept telling him that there was nothing wrong with her physically. But, after some time, Amaia stopped crying every night. Sometimes she would cry again, and then things would get back to normal for a while.
That’s how her life went. She would live a normal life with friends and school. Then she would have one of those nightmares ruining the peace.
At first that’s what she thought she was having: horrible nightmares about death. She believed she was having them as a way for her subconscious to deal with her mother’s death. Classic armchair psychology, but she had to rationalise this somehow. However, for the majority she tried not to think about it and keep living life.
Until reality made her deal with it.
Local news started reporting about a missing girl named Helena. She was at the park with her parents when she suddenly disappeared. But, Amaia knew that she had seen that girl before when Helena’s picture was shown on the news.
Hands trying to grab the edge, but kept slipping down until…
At first, Amaia thought that she couldn’t do anything to save Helena. The vision had been from the girl’s perspective. The only thing shown was little hands trying to hold on for dear life. Sometimes the girl would look up at the sky, but there was nothing.
Really? Nothing?
Amaia had started drawing since a young age as a way to cope with the nightmares she kept having. She had made a sketch of this dream, or better vision even though Amaia couldn’t know yet, and she had drawn something in the sky: an airplane. So, she started researching about airplanes tracking. That was how she found out that there was an airplane scheduled to travel over the town in an hour. It seemed that it was supposed to fly over the woods near the park.
Amaia anonymously called the police and told them that maybe she had seen the girl running in the woods earlier. The airplane came and went, but the police was too late, they had found Helena dead. As a consequence, a few months later Helena’s parents couldn’t live with the pain and killed themselves.
That is the event that changed Amaia’s life forever. She became more withdrawn and the visions didn’t stop. She understood more and more of what the visions entitled and what she had to do in order to help. The more she put herself out there, the more in danger she was.
Antonio was distraught when he got the call from the police. Amaia kept yelling that she was just trying to help, that she hadn’t done anything while her clothes were covered in blood. The victim was still alive but in a coma, so they couldn’t testify in favour of Amaia, so no one believed her of course and she was arrested. No one believed her until she kept yelling from her cell that someone else was going to die.
No one listened, but one officer, Arthur Worth. He followed Amaia’s instructions and found the victim and the criminal. This was the same perpetrator that had hurt the other victim. Even though the first victim had survived thanks to Amaia direct intervention, the second victim hadn’t had such chance because Amaia had been behind bars meaning that she hadn’t been there with the officer directly helping.
Amaia was cleared of any wrongdoing and freed. This was when she became a consultant before becoming a Detective, the officers helped Amaia in achieving her dream of becoming a Detective. The officers she worked as a consultant for have retired, but she is part of the police force now.
