The forest was peaceful when there were no humans around. Matthew yawned, lounging in front of the burrow beneath the tree that he called 'home'. Nearby, his older children, Cole and Harper, were chasing each other, taking in turns at playing hunter and prey. Inside the den, cosy and safe, were the younger two. He had settled Claire and Arian down for a nap, but had to keep checking in on them to make sure one wasn't trying to nibble the other's tail. The sight always made him huff with amusement. As a young pup, he had done the same with his own siblings.
It wasn't unusual for Matthew to be at the den alone. Elizabeth liked her own space from time to time, and sometimes it was best for her to hunt alone; she always had been the better hunter. Together they could bring down larger prey, but leaving the pups unattended was risky at the best of times. So many dangers awaited wolf pups in the forest; bears, cougars, coyotes, even a dog could kill a pup. Add the fact they were all Gifted, and there was the additional risk of hunters. Better for one to remain at the den, just in case.
A squeal from Cole shattered the peace, and Matthew rose to his paws and stalked over to where Claire had her brother pinned, her needle-sharp puppy teeth gripping poor Cole's muzzle. Matthew gave a sharp bark, gently shoving Harper away, his body posture making himself very clear. 'Your brother is not a chew toy.'
Harper huffed, then sighed and licked Cole's chin apologetically before trotting to chew on one of the old bones littered around the den instead. Matthew frowned briefly, wondering if he should start removing some of the bones now - mess invited trouble in the woods. But he decided against it for now. Maybe when Elizabeth was back and able to watch the pups. For now, he laid back down and yawned again, enjoying the dappled sun on his dark pelt as he kept an eye on his children. But despite his relaxed posture, he was still alert for any signs of danger, ready to defend his pack - his family - the moment he needed to. |

And I run from wolves, oohBreathing heavily
Seth was walking through the forest, a little off the usual hiking trails. She was familiar enough with the forest by now that she had no concerns of getting lost by straying from the paths. She was looking for firewood, her stock had been mostly depleted and she had been slacking on collecting lately. She had made several trips already, bringing small stacks back to her campsite then going back out for more. Slowly, her pile was building back up. This trip, she was distracted when she’d nearly stepped on a snake when she was going to pick up another stick. It hissed and darted off, and she realized that she hadn't been paying as much as she should have been. She probably had enough wood already anyway, so she piled the couple sticks she’d already gathered on the ground and decided to just take a walk instead. The sun was shining through the leaves, and there were a lot of animals out running around. Seth knew that she wasn’t going to be able to hide out in the forest forever, but for now, she was happy to be surrounded by so much life, so much beauty. As she was walking, Seth heard yelp and she looked around. She wasn’t far from the noise, and she moved a bit closer to investigate. When she approached, she realized the source was two wolf pups that looked like they were playing with each other. Seth looked around, looking for a mama wolf but she didn’t see any others, just the too little ones. They were adorable. Seth found a grassy spot next to a tree that she judged to be a safe distance away from the wolves, and she sat down to watch them. While she sat, she put her hands against the ground, willing the wildflowers in the area to bloom. Slowly, the flowers opened up, and she smiled wide. Perfect. They were so adorable that she wanted to go over and play with the pups, but was well aware she shouldn’t disturb them, so she made herself content to just observe them playing with each other.
