[nospaces] [attr="class","SETHLyrics"] I've been walkin' through a world gone blind[break] Careful creature made friends with time. He left her lonely with a diamond mind. [break] Burning cities and napalm skies. Fifteen flares inside those ocean eyes. [break] [attr="class","SETHBody"]
He approved of the name Bandit, and Seth smiled a bit wider. Sure, it was probably overused for racoons, but it was just so fitting. And this little bandit would make off with anything she left unattended at first, even now sometimes if she left food out for too long with her back turned. When he asked if she could talk to Bandit, she let out a small laugh and shook her head. “No, not really. But racoons are actually pretty smart, and he’s learned that he’ll get food regularly sticking around here so he’s become pretty chill.” [break][break]
It was a fair question, and she knew it. She’d said too much, giving away the very likely possibility that she was also Gifted. It made her nervous, but she tried to push that feeling away. This guy had already helped her, saved her from the coyote. He said he was a police officer and helping people is what he did. [break][break]
“You used to live out in the woods?” It was a bit less of a surprise, since he was clearly a shifter, and she’d come across shifters out here before. She didn’t know how common that was, or if it was rather rare for a family of shifters to live in the woods like that, so she was still a bit curious. Was it easier to be out in the wild as a wolf? She assumed it came with a set of different challenges that she couldn’t possibly think of. [break][break]
He questioned if she was set up for the winter, which brought another small laugh. “Sorry, yes. It’s just, I’m originally from Connecticut, so winter here is very different. But yes, I’ve got warm clothes and plenty of blankets to keep out the cold. Especially-” She paused and let out a breath. “Now that it’s just me.” She finished, moving to set up the camp chairs so they would have a comfortable place to sit. “And no, I’m not an escapee or anything that interesting.” More like a runaway. Though she’d been eighteen when they left and she was already twenty one, it did feel like she was running away from real life. [break][break]
“Do you ever work on missing person cases?” She knew she was going to have to explain herself, especially if he said yes, but she had decided that she was going to try to trust instead of just assuming the worst in other people. The last time she’d assumed the worst, it had gone very badly for her. If she’d just waited, listened, then maybe they could have avoided the entire misunderstanding. [break]

When she clarified she couldn't actually speak with the racoon, it was more of a sort of unspoken agreement, he nodded. Still, it left Jacob wondering if she was gifted or not. Or if perhaps she just knew other gifted people? Other shifters? He'd smelled some in these woods before. Shifters always had a distinct smell to them. Not quite animal but not quite human either. Some sort of odd in between. If she'd been living out in the woods long enough she'd likely run into another one. Jacob wondered if they'd revealed themselves to her like he had. That was neither here nor there really at the moment. So long as none of them were the terribly territorial type.
The returned curiosity about him having lived out in the woods was fair. Still, it wasn't particularly an easy time to talk about. Not that he was embarrassed of it, more so that he hated making up a lie as to why he had been doing it. "Ah yeah, I used to travel a lot before I settled down here and hunkering down in warm cave or under some dry brush as a wolf was cheaper than renting out a hotel room most of the time," he said with a chuckle. "Especially when you travel as light as I did." By which he meant traveling with nothing at all save for the clothes he would sometimes wear when he had to be a person for bit and his wallet and keys to his truck.
As she explained that she was from a much colder climate originally Jacob at first nodded in understanding with a small chuckle. If that were the case she should be fine then. Though it still made him curious as to how long she'd been living out in the woods. As she settled on it being just her now Jacob cocked his head to the side curiously. It sounded as if she'd been with someone else before. Or a group of people? Instead of prying further though he watched her shift things around and rearrange for more space for them to sit down.
He wasn't sure if she'd simply had a spat with someone, gone through a break up, or simply were traveling separately for the time being. Though when she asked if he'd worked on missing persons cases before it more or less answered his question. "I've worked on a couple," he answered a bit hesitantly. He had worked on exactly two. One to do with a runaway teen that they'd found safe two days after she went missing. And one that was still being looked into. He wasn't normally terribly involved in them at the moment. Not as much on the investigation end anyway. Mostly he'd gone with another officer to take pictures or statements and done some paperwork.
"Are you missing someone?" He asked, his tone decidedly a bit more serious than it had been a moment ago. "Or are you a missing person?" He knew sometimes people ran away from situations and wanted to remain lost. He knew that all too well. He took a step closer once things were more settled and waited for her to give an indication that he could sit down before taking a seat. "This can remain strictly off record if you'd prefer." lost in the thrill of it all Seth Perry // Let me know if you need me to change or add anything at all! ☀[googlefont=Merriweather Black]

It certainly was cheaper, living in the woods, than it was to stay in hotels all the time. She could only imagine how much easier it would be for a shifter, someone who could find shelter that wouldn’t work for non-shifters. “I can see that coming in handy.” She gave a small smile, thinking about how cool it would be to just move around the forest as an animal instead of her gangly awkward self. He didn’t explain why he’d been traveling, and Seth didn’t feel the need to push that particular issue. He’d tell her if he felt like talking about it. She knew what it was like to have secrets, or even just something that was hard to talk about. She didn’t get the sense that it was a happy reason, not the way that he’d said he’d been traveling light. [break][break]
He confirmed that he’d worked a “a couple” missing persons cases. A couple was better than none, as far as she was concerned. She did wonder how invested in them he’d been. Was he the officer who responded to the scene did a little looking and went on his way? Or was he the guy who followed up on tips and really searched for someone? Either way, she had questions. [break][break]
But first, he asked her a question. An important one, but it wasn’t as simple to answer as it should have been. “Um, mostly I’m missing someone.” She chewed her bottom lip for a couple seconds before continuing. “I suppose my parents might also think I’m missing at this point.” It had been too long since she’d called them. Long that it had been since Jason went missing, so she wondered what they could be thinking. Did they give up on her? Did they worry that she was hurt or dead? She imagined that they did worry, that they worried even when she was calling them on a regular basis. She just didn’t know what to say to them now, how to tell them Jason was gone and she was all on her own. They’d try to get her to come home, and she knew she couldn’t do that. It wasn’t safe. [break][break]
Seth motioned to the chairs, sitting in one and pulling her legs up under herself. “I haven’t been home since I was eighteen, a little over three years now. At first, I was calling my parents and texting them, letting them know I was alright. But, I haven’t been able to bring myself to contact them in over a year, not since my boyfriend, Jason, not since he went missing.” She knew that there were a lot of holes there, information missing that would make it all make more sense. She gave a small sigh, and decided to take the risk and trust Jacob. “Jason and I left home after his parents were killed and his sister went missing. It was Hunters. And I know none of this happened here or anything, but Hunters found us in Oregon, when we were on our way here. I haven’t seen him since… How long is it before it’s a lost cause?” [break][break]
Seth was almost certain that the answer was going to be a matter of hours to days, maybe a couple weeks. Well over a year seemed like it was way too long to have hope. But she just wasn’t ready to give up yet, she wasn’t ready to tell herself that Jason was gone forever. [break]

"Yeah, could be a pretty neat party trick too," he joked with a playful crooked grin. Not that Jacob had ever shifted at a party before. Or really in front of anyone outside of his old pack. Except for now perhaps Seth. But he didn't really think that counted. Probably.
Once she motioned for him to he took a seat across from her. Leaning forward with his elbows on his knees as he listened to her talk. Both being a missing person and missing someone. It seemed like she had a lot on her plate. He kept his questions to himself for the time being as she continued. There was a pang in his chest when she talked about her parents. Jacob often wondered if his mom still sat up waiting for him to come home. If she looked for him in empty barns and quiet bars he liked to hide himself in. He hoped she didn't. He hoped they'd all forgotten about him now and moved on with their lives.
When she explained that her and her boyfriend had been on the run from Hunters his jaw clenched. He wrung his hands together for a moment to steady himself. This wasn't about his personal feelings towards Hunters after all. Hearing that there was another girl missing as well caught his attention. Though her finally question tugged at his heart the most. In most cases when someone was missing for more than a few days they started looking for a corpse. Not a person. Normally after a few months searches stopped all together. How many missing persons cases had been lost to the wind?
Still, he offered her a small smile. "I don't think looking for someone you love is ever a lost cause," he answered honestly. At least from his perspective. He leaned back again with a heavy sigh and rubbed his palms up and down his jeans. "Though, I'll be honest most departments wouldn't be willing to exhaust the manpower looking for someone missing for more than a few months," he continued with a sympathetic shrug. "At least not without some heavy amount of clues as to where they could be."
Given he hadn't gone missing in California didn't help her case much at the moment either. But he didn't feel the need to load that on her as well. Jacob paused for a moment and chewed on the inside of his cheek. "Is there a reason y'all were comin' out here?" He asked curiously. lost in the thrill of it all Seth Perry // Sorry this took so long! Jacob seemed to be listening with a well practiced attentiveness, Seth assumed something he picked up in his line of work, though he could also have just naturally been a good listener. She didn’t get the sense that he was bored or tuned out, and she appreciated that. It was hard to open up, to tell anyone her story after hiding for so long. [break][break]
When he said it wasn’t a lost cause, Seth wasn’t so certain he was right. It really was feeling like a lost cause… But he continued on with a sigh. Seth knew that what he said had a lot of merit, that it had been a long time. She’d never reported him, it was in another state. Her only hope had been that he’d been okay and would make his way to her on his own somehow. But if he was going to do that, wouldn’t he be there by now? Wouldn’t he have at least reached out by now? [break][break]
“I wish I had any clues.” Seth let out her own long, heavy sigh. “It feels like giving up, but I don’t know if I can really keep convincing myself that he’s still out there somewhere, that the hunters didn’t kill him right then and there. I can’t imagine what could have happened otherwise, what could have kept him from at least finding a way to call me all this time. He knows the number, even if he didn’t have his own phone anymore after they attacked him.” [break][break]
She realized that she was rambling and let herself stop. She knew he’d get the point. She’d lost hope some time ago, really, but she had just been fooling herself lately, not wanting to face the inevitability that she was going to have to move on. She was going to have to figure out what her next steps were going to be now that she was truly alone. [break][break]
When he asked if there was a reason they were headed there, Seth paused and really thought about it. Why was this their next stop? Jason had said something about the city being promising. He said he’d heard good things about it. But he never really explained any further than that. He hadn't said what he’d heard about it. [break][break]
“You know, I don’t really know why he wanted to come here. He said he’d heard good things about Los Eurosia. Maybe he’d heard how nice the national forest is here?” She shrugged and looked around them, thinking of the campsite more like home than she had thought of anywhere else they had been since leaving New Haven. “I don’t know if it was anything more than that. He made all the plans for where we traveled.” [break][break]
Seth felt a little stupid, like she should have asked more questions, should have been more involved in where they were going and why. But that wasn’t her strong suit. Jason was so good at it all, it was easy to just let him handle it. [break]

He could see it in her eyes, hear it in her voice. She'd probably lost most of the hope that she'd ever find him a long time ago. Clearly there was still a part of her that hoped he was still out there somewhere. That he might call her one day or run into her at a grocery store or something. Sometimes Jacob felt that way too. There was still that part of him that wanted to walk home after a long day to his mama making dinner and hearing his brothers argue over who got to play what character in a videogame. Part of him that had hoped in everywhere he'd traveled that he might run into one of his siblings. Gather them up in his arms and hug them tight enough to squeeze all the air out of them.
He offered her a sympathetic smile. "Well, I'm sure he'd be proud of you for making it this far on your own," he offered instead. He didn't want to continue trying to dig in hope that a man he didn't know might be alive. Though as she went over how he'd been the one to make all the plans he let out a small chuckle. Mostly because he knew what it was like to follow someone without question. Someone you trusted that seemed like they knew what was best. Because it didn't matter where you were as long as you were there with them. "Well, I'd have to say he might have been right."
Jacob looked around the forest around them. It had been his favorite place to come since he'd gotten to the city. "Things seem pretty good here," he turned his eyes back to her with a smile. After a quick thought he chewed on the inside of his cheek before he let out another small sigh. "I've got a few old contacts, some friends that kind of convinced me to become a cop in the first place," he explained a bit quietly at first. "I can make a few calls, see if they've gotten any information on your guy on their ends. I could talk to some friends on the force here as well, see if we've picked anything up?" He offered. It didn't have to be a full case, but he couldn't stand seeing that hopeless look in this woman's eyes. lost in the thrill of it all Seth Perry // Hopefully my work schedule is done flip flopping now lol let me know if you need me to tweak or change anything! ☀[googlefont=Merriweather Black]

She’d never really stopped to consider if Jason would be proud of her. She had survived, all on her own, for well over a year. Sure, she hadn't made any plans to move on, and she hadn't really done anything differently than they had been doing things. Aside from just staying put. That was different. She’d been in this forest longer than they had stayed anywhere else. [break][break]
But she couldn’t bring herself to move on. If, by some miracle, Jason was still out there, this is where he’d look for her. [break][break]
“You’re probably right.” Seth acknowledged, giving a small nod. “I just wish there was a way to know, one way or the other. But maybe I never will.” She sighed and leaned back in the chair. “I’m sorry, none of this is your problem at all.” [break][break]
She realized she’d laid a lot on Jacob, considering they were strangers and he’d already saved her from the coyote. She didn’t need to lay her emotional baggage on him as well, that wasn’t fair. Even if he was a police officer, he wasn’t working now. [break][break]
Seth was surprised when he offered to make some calls and check around. She thought about his offer for a few long seconds, then shook her head. “I don’t think it would be fair to tie up any resources or take up anyone’s time when it’s so little to go on. Especially after all this time.” Besides, she wasn’t sure Jason would like having the authorities involved, in any way. [break]

"Sad girls are always my problem," he tried to sound charming but as soon as the words left his mouth his face scrunched up at the way they sounded. "Wait no, that came out wrong," he said with a quick shake of his head. As if trying to erase the words like an etch-a-sketch. He chuckled to himself as his cheeks flushed a light pink color in embarrassment. Jacob offered her a smile when she claimed that she didn't want to tie up resources looking for someone with so little evidence. "It wouldn't be tyin' up resources, just a little call to see if anything has come through," he said with a small shrug. If it was just asking them to go into their system to see if anything came up matching a name or description that was hardly going to take up a lot of time.
Though given how they'd been living he figured she might be nervous about getting authorities involved at all. Which was understandable. "Don't gotta send out a search and rescue team but, maybe just something to pick up if he's been around?" Though Jacob wasn't sure if the answers would give her any kind of relief. If they found nothing she'd be right back where she was now. If they found something it could be a worry of why he hadn't found her yet. It was an offer none the less. "I'll tell ya what, how 'bout I give you my number and if you decide you want to take me up on the offer you can text me." That at least gave her the option of not making any decisions at the very moment. She could think on it. Ponder it over and decide if she wanted to go through with it.
"Or if ya just want someone to treat you to a nice meal," he offered with a charming crooked smile. "Can even bring a doggy bag back for your little furry bandit." If nothing else this gave him something to think about as well. Figuring out who this guy was. Why hunters wanted him and his family so badly. Sure they hated gifted folks in general but he'd never heard of them tracking down entire family lines like this. Granted he hadn't heard much about hunters to begin with and what he heard just said they were bad news. lost in the thrill of it all Seth Perry // Sorry this is so short! He claimed it wouldn’t be taking up resources, but Seth was still hesitant to accept the offer for him to make some calls, to look into it. Mostly, she wasn’t sure he would even find anything. Jason wasn’t careless, he wouldn’t leave a paper trail. He was smarter than that. If he was still alive. [break][break]
If he did find something, Seth was afraid that it would be bad. As much as she wanted to know what had happened, she wasn’t sure how she would handle bad news. [break][break]
Instead of pushing, he offered his phone number, in case she changed her mind. Seth was grateful for that, and she nodded. “Thank you.” She couldn’t imagine changing her mind at the moment, but she was aware that things changed, sometimes quickly. She’d learned that sometimes circumstances weren’t what they seemed to be, not even close. Maybe that was the same with Jason. Maybe she was just missing a key bit of information, just like she’d missed with Noah… [break][break]
She somehow doubted it. They were completely different situations. [break][break]
“So, what made you want to become an officer?” Seth was as desperate to find another topic to discuss as she was curious about Jacob. He’d been kind to her, helping her when he didn’t know her. He’d trusted her enough to come back to her camp, and she had a gut feeling that he was trustworthy. Not that she always trusted her gut, but so far he seemed to be safe enough. Plus, she already knew he was like her, so that made him less of a risk. [break][break]
She sometimes wondered what she’d be doing now, if she hadn't run away with Jason. Most likely, she’d been in college. But what if she hadn't? What kind of job would she have now? What would she be doing with her life? [break][break]
Another thought crossed her mind, one that she’d had a bit more frequently lately. What was it that she wanted to do with her life now? It wasn’t like she could hide out in the woods forever. She had to figure out what she wanted, what she was good at and could make a living doing. But she didn’t know where to even begin. [break][break]
