Ferris snorted at her returned sass. "Juste un peu?" he shook his head. He did enjoy that his kids knew more than just English. And he looked forward to when they could understand even better. It would open so many doors for them.
El called him 'sir' and he internally winced. That was worse than her using his first name. Even when it was clear she wasn't all that upset, it still chipped away at him. But outwardly he just nodded appreciatively as she set down the shakers.
He listened to them settling down to eat while he finished the pancakes. Once the last of the batter was a fluffy breakfast for dinner cake, he turned off the griddle and the checked the oven and the rest of the appliances before carrying the rest of the pancakes to the table. He set them down and ran a hand though his hair. He felt exhausted but he was glad Darcy seemed to be feeling better.
"What would you like to drink," he asked, mostly of Darcy, but of anyone else who still wanted something. He fetched enough cups and water or milk or tea and returned with those before sitting down. "Yeah, I think they did," he said, grabbing a bit of everything for himself. "Next time they don't need either of us in the kitchen," he suggested seriously. He didn't actually mean that, but his kids still didn't really get his humor. Sometimes El did.

Had El realized that Ferris didn’t enjoy being called ‘Sir’, she might have just caved and called him ‘dad’. But she was still sort of embarrassed to do that. Or rather, she was too embarrassed to have the conversation about why she didn’t just call him ‘dad’ regularly. Instead, she just shrugged and made her way out to the table with the eggs.
Darcy glanced up at her husband’s question, realizing she’d forgotten to grab a drink for herself before getting to the table with Beck. “Oh, water for me please baby, thanks.” She said with a soft smile as she began to use her fork to cut into her little stack of pancakes. She grinned as she enjoyed the first bite, nodding her approval.
“I can handle cooking sometimes, so long as my minions behave.” She gave a gentle poke to Beck’s side and the six year old girl giggled with delight. When she wasn’t leaving candy in her room and drawing ants in, El didn’t mind her little sister. Though, she would never admit that to her friends.
“Well, maybe we should plan a night when the kids get to pick and make dinner?” Darcy’s eyes moved to Ferris with a raised brow. “What do you think Daddy?” she gave a playful wink, beck and Rhys immediately looking to him with excitement. El chuckled, taking a drink of her milk and trying not to come off as too interested in his response.
As much as Darcy was enjoying the chit-chat, she began to eat more of the food on her plate. Finishing the eggs and bacon first, and getting the majority of her pancakes finished before that annoying little alarm on her phone went off. That was her fifteen minute warning. She refrained from cursing in front of the kids, but frowned as she tapped at her phone screen. “I’ve got to get dressed.” she said softly, leaning over to kiss the top of Rhys’ head and the boy grinned up at her. “I’ll be off this weekend, they’ve already fussed at me for my overtime. We can do something fun then.” Darcy said with a nod to them as she stood from the table. Only El didn’t immediately seem placated by the promise of family fun for the weekend.

Ferris had called his own father 'sir.' Not as a term of endearment or even fostered respect, but because that was what the man had demanded to be. He was sir to everyone except his wife, and that included his two children. The man hadn't been a particularly good father. He wasn't the only disciplinarian of the family, nor was that the only role he served, but Ferris was certain he would have had a happier childhood had that been all the man did. The word 'sir' held more than just a bad taste for a man he hated and who hated him. He'd never had a good relationship with his father. And while he wanted his kids to have what he hadn't, that wasn't why he had kids.
He found it more than amusing that El called her siblings minions. He supposed Rhys did listen sometimes. And Beck looked up to her like crazy. So maybe it wouldn't be the biggest disaster to befall their kitchen. Plus, he would like to relax on the couch with Darcy and catch up on TV shows. Though perhaps relax was a strong word just yet. Though mostly, he was surprised El wanted to cook. Though, Ferris would admit, he liked to cook because that meant he liked what was made. So, there was control there.
The slightest quirk of the corner of his mouth was the only visible recognition he had for Darcy calling him that name. So he enjoyed it quite a lot coming from her, especially in a certain setting. It was a surefire way for her to get him excited. Or to tease him, as the case was with her saying it in front of the kids before she had to go to work. Damn he hated this woman so much that he loved her. "I think we can make that happen. Maybe Wednesday?" Because there were tv shows and sports. He settled at the table and looked over at Darcy, and raised an eyebrow. "Been a while since we got to hang out and cuddle," he said with a grin. He might not go so far as to be explicit, but the man wasn't about to hide his affection for his wife, least of all in front of his kids. Nor was he one to lie. Omit things because they weren't mature enough to understand, sure. But Ferris didn't believe in telling his kids that the tooth fairy was real. Or that Santa and flying reindeer were real. Or that mascots weren't anything other than a person in a (sometimes terrifying) suit.
"Think about what you want to make, and either your mom can take you shopping tomorrow, or I can after dinner." Their overlap time wasn't long enough for dinner and shopping unless they ate out, which was likely.
He chatted with Beck about her breakfast sandwich and El about her upcoming meets and games and all she had going on. Rhys was quiet, but that usually meant he was pretty happy, especially when it came to food.
Ferris nodded. "We'll figure something out," he confirmed, reaching over to pull Darcy's plate over and add her pancakes to his. "Be nice to get out of the house," he agreed. With everyone.

So maybe the offer letting the kids handle dinner was a bit… adventurous. But honestly she knew they would have fun and it might give Ferris and her time to watch a little tv. Darcy quite liked the idea of more time with her husband, whom she hadn’t gotten to see much this week. But knowing he was staying home tomorrow made her hopeful for some additional time with him. Hey, she still was a woman with needs and desires who happened to have an incredibly sexy husband; being a mom didn’t make her sex drive non-existent after-all.
“Sounds good to me, start thinking about what you might want to try your hand at making guys.” She said with a soft smile, watching as El but back her smile, choosing to instead pop some bacon in her mouth while Beck clapped her hands excitedly, hands already covered in syrup. Darcy smiled to Ferris as she finished off her glass of water and headed toward the laundry room, grabbing a clean seat of scrubs from the dryer.
“Maybe we could go to the beach, if it’s not storming.” El offered with a shrug, grabbing another pancake and using it to make a ‘taco’ with the eggs and bacon inside. She took a bite and did a little sort of ‘happy dance’ in her seat as she chewed. There was absolutely no denying she was her mother’s daughter.
“The pancakes are delicious Dad.” Rhys said with a toothy grin, finishing off his first giant pancake and moving to take another. The boy had a good appetite when it was something he enjoyed.
Darcy changed in the downstairs bathroom, into a set of black scrubs that fit her comfortably, if not a tad more snuggly since they’d just come out of the dryer. She put her clothes in the dirty hamper before heading upstairs to the bedroom. It was where she’d find her work shoes, her favorite scrunchy for her hair when she was working and her basic jacket with the hospital logo on the left front pocket. She’d make short work of pulling her hair up and away from her face, then brush her teeth, reapply her deodorant and a light spritz of her perfume.

As much as it was easier now that the kids weren't tiny and El was trusted to occasionally babysit or generally help take charge, the kids were more fun to hang out with now too. Having full conversations and learning what they liked and what they enjoyed doing and were learning in school and having them help with chores and shopping... It was great. But their schedules often didn't line up with how much hers moved around. Thankfully he could be a bit flexible with his hours but that still left them both feeling like they lived on two sides of the same island.
"This weekend? Maybe," Ferris agreed. He honestly hadn't yet thought about what they would do even for breakfast. They hadn't been to the zoo in a while and the younger two really enjoyed that. He'd been thinking ice skating, but considering things were finally starting to warm up, something outside might be nicer.
Ferris couldn't help but smile as El made a breakfast taco for dinner. He was glad they all seemed to be enjoying it. "Thank you, Rhys," he said, "You having any bacon or eggs?" He bit back adding a 'like your sisters' only because he wasn't trying to be that pushy. One reminder was enough, he wasn't going to make them eat things they didn't want or like. But he would pay attention and they knew it, especially as it came to whether they could have dessert or snacks later.
Rhys looked over at the bacon and thought for a long moment. "I'll eat two," he said finally, looking up as if trying to decide if his dad thought that was good enough. "And some eggs?"
"You don't have to if you don't like them," Beck said helpfully, picking up the pieces of egg that had fallen out of her sandwich and mostly onto the table.
"I know but I want..." he trailed off, mumbling and looking at his plate. He decided rather than discuss dessert now, he would pretend he hadn't said anything and leaned over the table to take two pieces of bacon. Ferris moved the eggs closer so he could use the spoon for those.
He finished his helping of pancakes, eggs and bacon and then Darcy's leftovers as she changed and got ready. Where Ferris had grown up in a family were getting up from the table before his own father was finished was a punishable offense, as long as everyone pitched in to help clean up, he didn't really care. It wasn't a situation he wanted to repeat on his kids, and they weren't going to enforce something when their mother would often have to break the rules due to her job. Best to not encourage that. Once he finished, he helped clean up Beck and then Beck helped bring him dishes from the table so he could either clean them in the sink or load the dishwasher while he took care of the kitchen. El finished up next and helped with the dishes in the sink.
Rhys was still eating when Darcy finished getting ready. Beck had attached herself to Ferris' left foot asking about ice cream. Ferris wasn't sure where El had wandered off to but considering how much help she had been already this evening, he figured she was due some unharried chill time. "Darcy, this one is trying to tell me she finished her homework already," he said, asking his wife. His disbelief wasn't uncalled for. Rhys was the good student. El knew the tragedy of procrastination well enough by now. Beck still hadn't figured out where she fit in. He lifted her on his foot exaggeratedly. "You need to eat more, pup," he noted with how light she was.

El wasn’t shy about jumping in to help when needed, like with Beck’s pancake sandwich. But she just focused on eating her own food the time being. Listening to Rhys, Becks and their dad was always an entertaining part of dinner. Especially when it was clear Rhys was trying to figure out just how much to say around Beck. She had to hand it to him; he was smarter than most of the kids his age.
Which in turn put a target on his back at school, but El didn’t let anyone pick on her siblings. She’d been the reason of a parent making an upset phone call to her dad and mom on more than on occasion. Five to be exact. She didn’t count the most recent one, she hadn’t intended to make that kid cry. But every other time, she had meant business. No one was allowed to give her brainy little brother a hard time.
The rest of dinner progressed fairly normally, though El did take her time finishing. She wasn’t particularly in a hurry to tackle the cleaning. “So… when we make dinner, we have to do the clean-up too, don’t we?” She asked with a raised brow as she pulled a hair tie off her wrist and twisted up her hair. She finished the dishes in the sink and heard her phone chime from the other room. She picked up the phone and her texting marathon with friends from both the track and hockey team started. She didn’t got comfortable in a chair in the living room and sat tapping away on her phone.
Darcy grinned at the sight of Beck clinging to Ferris’ foot, shaking her head as she opened the fridge. Yogurt, raspberries, blueberries, some granola bars, a protein shake and some mixed nuts managed to find their way into her lunch bag, along with an energy drink and bottle of water. While working she preferred things to snack on since she seldom got an uninterrupted lunch break. And if she did, they had a cafeteria; she could always get something more filling there.
“Well, I’m pretty sure she finished it. But we did get a little distracted with the skittles, so it wouldn’t hurt to double check… her bag is hanging by the door.” she said with a nod as she zipped the lunch bag and another alarm went off. “Ill see you guys in the morning!” She made her rounds giving hugs and kisses to the kids and returning to the kitchen to grab her lunch bag and kiss her husband. “I’ll place that pick-up order when I get to work, just text me if you think of anything else we might need.” She said with as she gave him a kiss and did a final check to ensure she had her keys, wallet, phone and pager.

As much as Ferris appreciated that his kids looked out for each other (they had a sort of pack mentality that he enjoyed but never had and didn't quite understand), he didn't appreciate getting phone calls from the school at work. It was enough that he had school phone numbers saved in his phone, numbers he never wanted to know. But while he doled out obligatory punishments to El when she went overboard, he didn't go too far. Partly because he knew she was just looking out for Rhys. And partly because he was always worried he would be like his own father when it came to punishments, and he sorely wanted to avoid that.
Ferris hummed at El's question as he finished loading the dishwasher. "There's two sides to that. You make the mess, you clean it up. But it's polite to help out the cook in thanks for the meal. That's why your mother always stacks the plates and trash when we go out to eat. It's nice to the wait staff," he explained. He and Darcy would probably help clean up. And depending on what the kids wanted to make, he might help with a bit of prep too.
Once everything was cleaned up, Ferris was more determined to take a shower, but got the feeling Beck was in a mood not to leave him alone. He raised his eyebrow at his youngest, still not sure how she got skittles, and upstairs no less. "You show me that bag and I'm all yours for an hour," he promised, watching Beck run in the entry hall. He had to run laundry and fix the toilet paper holder in the kid's bathroom and potentially baths and probably something else he was forgetting. He pulled Darcy into a hug when she kissed him and then let her half step away before grabbing her by her jacket and pulling her back in for another kiss. "Alright. I love you. Have a good shift."
Beck still had a page of homework (it had a back side) but thankfully 1st grader homework was easy enough. Rhys, he didn't worry about, though admittedly 4th grader homework could be pretty tough, depending on the class. While Ferris helped Beck figure out her page, Rhys brought down one of his half-finished Lego sets and set the box on the table to work on. He never asked for help or wanted it, but he did like to feel like it was a social activity. He talked to his dad about what he was building (this one was a tiger) and Ferris was always impressed he followed the directions even at this age.
He managed to get laundry done and cleaned up the kid's bathroom with Beck took a bath. He was really glad he didn't have to help with that as much. It meant he could clean up the kid's bathroom and fix the toilet paper roll at the same time. Beck complained that Rhys and El didn't have to take a shower and Ferris explained that Rhys hadn't gotten syrup and all over himself. And El was a teenager, she could handle herself. They had fruit roll ups for a snack, which was what Rhys was so excited about. Ferris didn't remember whatever it was he forgot but did manage to sit down and watch some hockey with El. Of course, he fell asleep on the couch and woke up to Beck sniffling and holding her arm in front of his face and Rhys forcibly crawling up under his arm to give him a hug. Thankfully the hockey game wasn't over yet, as that would be bedtime.
"What is it, Rhys? What happened?"
Beck was clearly upset, but she didn't look hurt. Still, she sobbed quietly, trying to get herself together. Ferris let Rhys crawl under his arm and leaned over to take Beck's hand.
"Beck broke it," he mumbled. "My race car." He meant his Legos. "She tried to take the directions and I didn't want her to rip it so I took it back and she bumped the table and it fell off," he said in a rush. Ferris ruffled his hair, which the boy hated, though he didn't push him away because he wanted to comfort.
Ferris let out a thoughtful noise at Beck. "I think we need to cut it off. The whole arm." he teased. So maybe his humor wasn't understood by his kids. Beck jerked her arm back and made a face at him, but her sudden alarm put an end to the tears. "She's sorry, right?" Beck nodded. "Remember to use your words first, bud. And I bet we can fix it. It's Legos." How hard could it be? He was mostly just relieved the pair weren't screaming at each other about it. That happened sometimes. A lot of times. Usually, Beck instigated on purpose or on accident and Rhys retaliated, but he was learning to not be so aggressive. He was a lot bigger than his sister.
"I don't want to fix it. I'll have to start all over."
"What step were you on? Maybe I can help."
"Fifty-two. But I don't want to," he grumbled.
He looked up at the TV as the Oilers scored and the screen flashes. Three minutes left on the clock in regulation. "Maybe tomorrow. It's bedtime and it sounds like everyone is tired," he said with a yawn. "PJs and toothbrushes," he said, nudging both of them away from the couch. Rhys frowned, clearly unhappy still. "You don't want to be tired for school tomorrow do you?" The boy shook his head. Beck grabbed his leg again. "And you, little lady with the smiley stickers. We have a snack to pick up in the morning."
That almost immediately distracted her and she ran off up the stairs chattering about snacks and food dye and Ferris wasn't sure what else. She had way too much energy.
Once the younger two were ready for bed, he said goodnight to Rhys who had picked up his chapter book to read by the nightlight and then laid with Beck to tease her and tickle her about cutting her arm off some more until she laughed and fell asleep. He extracted himself from her room to see what El was up to.

Ellis gave a nod, knowing all too well how her mother liked to leave a table or booth ‘pre-bussed’ for the server before they’d leave. Always trying to set a decent example for the kids. “Fair enough.” She said with a grin as she moved to dry off her hands from washing the dishes.
She grinned when Darcy made her rounds to say goodbye and goodnight, glancing up from her phone long enough to give her a hug and roll her eyes at the kiss she got on her forehead. “Have fun saving people.” She said with only a hint of sarcasm in her tone.
Once Darcy returned to say her goodbyes to Ferris, she couldn’t help but grin when he barely let her take a step before pulling her back for another kiss. Damn, she loved this man. “I love you too, and I’ll try.” She grinned and remote started the car as she gave a final pat to Beck’s head on her way to the door.
El was busy texting and discussing the upcoming track meet with her teammates, and then chatting about an upcoming formal. While she wasn’t known for being the biggest girly-girl; she was actually excited about this dance. Mostly because it was the last formal she’d enjoy before starting high school. But her attention shifted toward the Hockey game once it was turned on.
With the game on, she barely pulled her attention from the screen until the commotion between her siblings and dad was too distracting. She shook her head at the whole ordeal, remembering a time when it was Rhys disrupting her own hobbies and play. But that was how it was, having a younger sibling.
She went to her room to change, using the upstairs bathroom to brush her teeth and ready herself for bed. But returning to the living room with her laptop so she could do a little research on dresses. While her mom was eager to take her to find something on one of her days off, El was still having a difficult time finding the idea of a formal dress exciting. “So, what if I don’t want to wear a fancy dress to this formal; do you think mom will be too crushed?” She asked Ferris when he returned from putting her younger siblings down.

He leaned on the top of the armchair El was sitting in, her legs crossed just like her mom. He'd married such a weirdo and loved her to pieces. Of course, their kids were weird too. He let out a thoughtful noise as he leaned there, looking down over her shoulder at her laptop screen. "You mean you want to wear a not fancy dress?" Ferris asked his daughter, serious. Maybe. "You want to wear a suit? Or you want to go naked?" These questions were just as potentially serious.
To be honest, he had forgotten there was even a formal coming up. It was hard to pay attention to three different grade schedules. He was pretty good with the sports and the performing arts, but school events he didn't do so well.
His gaze shifted up to the tv where there was a wrap up of the game and some highlights from others. He tried not to get too distracted. "I think she'll like taking you to pick out and try on anything, as long as you're excited about it." He didn't read too much into what El did or didn't want to wear. "What sort of formal dance is this one? Where the girls pick the boys or just a party?"
He moved to the dining room table and began carefully picking up bricks from the floor and collecting everything on the table. The chair complained slightly when he practically dropped into it. At least the nap had been helpful. Rhys had opened all the bags rather unnecessarily, but he had sorted them all by color. Which was clever, though there was a lot of black and orange pieces. The half finished 'car' was a bit of a mess, so it was hard to know where to start. He ended up flipping all the way back to the beginning and following along from there.
Once he had it mostly back to step fifty, he leaned back and looked over at the clock in the kitchen. "It's past my bedtime. Yours too," he noted, pushing himself up and hunting down the remote to turn off the tv. "Come on. Upstairs with you."

”Oh my god, stop!” She said with a shake of her head, clasping a hand to her forehead as she did. El looked to her dad with a shrug. “I don’t know, it’s just…” Suddenly she sighed. She wasn’t quite sure how to explain herself. “All the formal dresses everyone is gushing about just make me want to cringe.” Another shrug as she tapped a few keys on the laptop and looked up toward him.
“Like, I don’t mind something girly, but I want to wear pants. A skirt just seems so girly.” El admitted softly, a touch embarrassed. She didn’t typically plan on talking about fashion choices with him, but she truly didn’t want to hurt her mom’s feelings on this topic. Not that she thought Darcy would be too crushed. She had seen pictures of her mom’s preference on formal attire, and it wasn’t outrageously girly. But she was a bit nervous about broaching the topic. Practicing with her dad helped make her less anxious.
But his next question actually made her blush, and she felt mortified. “Oh, we’re supposed to ask the boys… but I haven’t asked anyone yet.” Of course she was comfortable with the idea of it all, but actually figuring out who to ask… that was another thing entirely. She didn’t want to make things weird by asking her teammates from track of hockey, but she didn’t really know many of the other boys in her grade that well. “I kinda miss when things were more simple…. Remember when we used to have the ‘daddy/daughter’ dances?”
She glanced up from the laptop again at this question she posed, fighting back a slight chuckle. Even when she was younger she had a hard time sticking to her words instead of using her fists. She had been enjoying her first daddy/daughter dance, giggling with some friends as they gushed over their adorably girly shoes. When one of the girls who liked to pick on El regularly came to ask why she even bothered to show up, since ‘she didn’t have a dad’. This of course resulted in El snapping and even at 6 she didn’t seem to have any issue throwing a punch. Thankfully she didn’t break her nose, but she didn’t have anything quite nice to say to the girl afterwards.
After spending a good amount of time scrolling through some different ideas for outfits, she glanced up when her dad stirred. She raised a brow, then cracked a half smile as she nodded. Closing the laptop and tucking it under her arm as she stood, stretching a little before yawning. “Goodnight!” She gave him a hug, turning toward the stairs and heading up toward her room.

Ferris smiled. It was so much easier with kids to do that. "Not much a fan of dresses either. Don't think your mom is either." He couldn't remember the last time he saw his wife in a dress. But she was attractive in anything.
"Bet you can find a cool suit jacket to go with pants, eh?" He agreed. "Skirts aren't all that girly. Kilts are a thing." Okay, so maybe he was just being distracting rather than helpful, but he knew nothing about clothes.
He knew El had a lot of friends who were boys. Considering she was part of a local hockey league separate from school, plus the track team. But friends who were boys was very different from asking one of them to a dance. "That's alright. If you want to, ask whoever you want. If you don't want to, don't and don't worry about it," he advised. Ferris wasn't sure where she was going with 'simple' but he smiled as she brought up those dances. That had been 3rd or maybe 4th grade. It felt like ages ago. Probably the closest El got to calling him her dad in all but name. Which was why he wasn't too worried if she never wanted to. He knew she cared.
"I remember you squaring up and punching that Rachel girl in the face. Explaining you out of that one and getting us away from the school without any charges isn't my idea of simple," he noted. "But you probably just remember the ice cream," he added, glossing over the part where she felt she was defending her family. He had a vivid enough memory of the moment to recall the rude girl's name. And the ice cream El got. And that they tried to 'omit the truth' from her mother, but Darcy figured them out pretty quick.
"Night, El. I love you," Ferris said, holding back a yawn as he returned her hug.
He passed out pretty quickly after that. It seemed like no time at all that he was up again, waking up Rhys and then Beck and then letting them try to get themselves ready while he figured out breakfast which considering of various types of toast. Jelly toast, avocado toast, peanut butter toast, some with cereal on them. El had been up already asince she had to leave first to catch the bus. Not that they wouldn't be far behind with the need to pick up snacks.
Once everyone was up and fed and mostly put together, he got them in his truck (he was so done with booster seats already) and they stopped by the store for a curbside pick up. Short grocery list handled, Ferris dropped the other two off at the elementary school and then debated actually going into the office. He had told Darcy he wouldn't though and really needed the downtime.
Back at home, he checked over a few work things on his laptop and then called it early, undressing and then returning to their spacious king sized bed before the sun was all the way up.

“I just feel like those fancy dresses are too much. There’s nothing wrong with some sequins or sparkle, but all that tulle and satin or taffeta… I would vomit.” She shook her head, feeling a bit more at ease knowing that he was right. Her mom wasn’t the type to wear dresses very often… in fact, El was pretty sure that except for charity events for work; her mother hadn’t worn many dresses in the last year. She liked helping her mother dress for those events, especially when she’d tell her all about the event the next day.
“I mean, skirts aren’t terrible. But that means I’d have to shave, and that’s such a chore.” El sighed, shrugging her shoulders at the idea. She’d much rather just find some sort of sequined suite or something of the sort. Her eyes found her dad sitting at the table working on the Lego pieces and she smirked. “Trust me, you’ll know if I decide to ask anyone… besides; Polly and I have been discussing just going with a group of friends so no one feels left out.”
It wasn’t a half bad idea, but it definitely felt like something girls did to avoid feeling awkward. El hadn’t really considered if she had a crush on any of the boys in her grade, most were just so goofy she couldn’t wrap her mind around the girls who thought these same boys were cute. Ew. She just knew she wanted to have fun with her friends and not feel worried about finding a ‘Date’ for the dance.
She chuckled at the memory, nodding her head. “That’s right, Rachel. She was such a b-“ she sucked in her bottom lip and corrected herself. “Brat.” El gave an embarrassed dip of her head. Okay, so maybe her mom swore a touch more freely around her than she ought to. “I love you too.” She rushed out as she raced up the stairs.

Darcy had a rather eventful night at work. There had been a car accident with three people requiring surgeries right at the start of her night. Thankful, nothing too life threatening and by the time she was wrapping up with the third surgery; the first two were stable and sleeping. Of course there were a few people coming in sick after a night of drinking, a mugging victim and a patient presenting with extreme hypertension.
She was thankful the on-call doctor didn’t mind being paged in when they were called about another car accident. Another two patients, both requiring immediate surgeries and Darcy couldn’t be in two places at once. “Good of you to let me get some sleep before paging me.” Darcy chuckled. “Please, you know if it was up to me you’d have gotten to enjoy the full night off.” She said with a shake of her head, glancing to the older gentleman with an apologetic smile. He nodded, sitting tucking in his scrub top as he tied on his surgical cap. “I suppose it’s the thought that counts.” He sighed and Darcy just nodded, adjusting her own surgical cap as she went to scrub in.
It was touch and go for a bit, but in the end not all patients were able to be saved. Darcy wasn’t naive enough to expect every surgery to be a success, but that didn’t mean the losses weren’t difficult. Especially not when delivering the news to whatever friend of family member showed up. Right now, she was sharing the details with a crying woman, her sister had fallen asleep at the wheel and suffered a severe brain bleed, on top of intense trauma to her body on impact. “I’m so sorry for your loss, Ian will get you that paperwork.” She said with a tight voice as she gave a curt nod and stepped away, she input her surgical notes sitting in one of the empty conference rooms.
Two hours went by and she shed off her white coat and hung it in her locker, grabbing her purse and letting her hair down, ready to head home.
Darcy was running a bit behind this morning, but she managed the drive home just fine and sighed as she parked the SUV in the driveway and eased out of the vehicle. She needed to change, and maybe take a shower. She unlocked the front door and locked it back behind her as she shrugged out of her jacket and slipped out of her work shoes. It was quiet in the house, which surprised her. Usually Ferris was up and getting ready to leave. She headed up the stairs when she didn’t see him downstairs and headed for their room. She couldn’t help but smile softly when she saw him sleeping in their bed.
“Hey, do you have time to join me for a shower?” She asked softly as she sat on the bed near him, gently running a hand through his hair and leaning forward to kiss him.

He shrugged and rubbed his chin. "Shaking is a chore," he agreed. One he typically found worth the hassle personally, but that was because he liked personal grooming and keeping up appearances most of the time. Not that he would dare claim shaving was more of a choice for him than it was for any woman.
"I do trust you," he said, returning his attention to the Legos. Whether she asked a specific boy or took her friends as a group, he knew she would have a good time. "Just remind me what night it is, and I am happy to drive." He was pretty sure Darcy wouldn't mind trading him for his truck one evening if she was still on this night shift.
Ferris directed his gaze to her as she was about to call her then six-year-old classmate a bitch. He raised his eyebrows at her and snorted, shaking his head in amusement. At least she caught herself. He knew Darcy swore a lot around all of their kids and to be honest, Ferris was only a little better. He mostly wanted them to understand that there were certain words that were intentionally offensive and that they shouldn't uses such words normally. Especially at school or whenever they got a job somewhere. Swearing had its place and he certainly didn't mind El having a colorful vocabulary (honestly, he'd rather she learn what something meant at home and be able to use it appropriately if a moment called for it or, most likely, understand what some idiot was saying to her so she could appropriately kick his ass) but she was still a bit young to be using such language regularly.

He usually went for a run and then showered and was on his way out. But this morning, between putting away the groceries and setting the insect repellant on the table for El when she got home (he texted her to ask if the ants were really bad or if it could wait, but largely because he was worried about the pests getting out of control), and work, he didn't bother going back out. He did attempt to keep himself awake for a bit with some tv shows, but he'd made the mistake of lying down in bed and fell asleep just as Darcy returned.
The sound of the front door opening woke him up and he was confused for a moment before he glanced at his phone and saw the time. He looked up as his wife walked into the bedroom. "Morning," he greeted with an enthusiastic sleepy grin, pushing himself up to return her kiss and press his hand to her cheek. She looked exhausted. It must have been a rough shift. "I'd love to shower with you. But only if I get to undress you."
