Darcy put on the music Beck requested, which was classic rock. Not quite surprising, but only because she said it was too loud to be sad listening too. The girl was adorable, even with her rosy nose and puffy cheeks from her little tears. Rhys on the other hand, had his eyes glued to the ambulance on the road ahead of them.
Aside from his ECG, blood pressure and CT; she already had a few in mind. Tilt test, stress test, an echo, blood tests… to name a few. She’d tried to talk him into an MRI, but she knew that might be a bit of a stretch. But she couldn’t help it, her husband dropped to the ground without a heartbeat… she’d be lying if she said she wasn’t absolutely terrified.
————
In the ambulance, El nodded at his words but still seemed on edge. “You aren’t wrong there.” She allowed with a half grin, it was had been her first ‘serious’ hockey related injury, and her mom had absolutely flipped out. But thankfully, she didn’t try to stop El from playing. Instead, she’d just asked Ferris to help her learn how to take a hit. As she knew it was a touch unrealistic to ask him to teach her how to not get hit. It was a contact sport after all.
El was snapped back to the moment by Nate telling her dad to remove his shirts for to get some things attached to him. She didn’t like seeing him like this. He was supposed to be untouchable, at least in her head. And while she knew he was just trying not to alarm them, she didn’t like him acting like everything was fine. “You know, you and mom tell us all the time how we’re not supposed to lie. Isn’t acting like you’re fine when you’re not, kinda the same thing?” Now she crossed her arms, hazel eyes narrowing slightly as she tried to contain some of her rising frustration.
It wasn’t even that she was mad at him. Or even mad in general. She was afraid. But El didn’t particularly enjoy letting her fear be so visibly shared, so she tried to pass it off as anger. Which was easy to do when she felt like she was being handled with ‘kid gloves’. “You shouldn’t brush it off like it’s nothing.” She quipped with a frown. Glancing to the monitors that tracked his heart rate. She wanted to be able to appreciate that at least she could see from the monitors that his heart was working, but El couldn’t shake that fear. And again, that fear showed itself as anger. Though whether it was anger with herself, or with him; she didn’t know.

Ferris didn't like El seeing him like this. He should have told her to stay with her mom but instead he had given into her pleading eyes and that look that always got him to cave and do anything she wanted since she was four years old. And he thought he was strong willed.
He knew she wouldn't like his 'literal' answer. Even Darcy hated when he interpreted her words in a way she hadn't intended. He grimaced as she called him out for basically lying to her. She wasn't wrong. But even him confessing that he truthfully didn't know got him a similarly snappy answer. He frowned at her, noticing how upset she was getting. He would rather her be honest with him in return rather than whatever this facade was.
"Ellis," he said her first name gently, sighing. His shoulders slumped slightly and he offered a small smile that didn't do such a great job of hiding how exhausted and terrified he felt in that moment. Ferris reached his hand out to his daughter. "I don't know. I wish I did. That's never happened before and we both know your mother won't stop until she knows how to ensure it never happens again." He said the last part with only a little more certainty than he felt. He trusted Darcy. Sure, cardiology wasn't her main area, but she was smart.
He laid back and pulled the mask up, taking a few long breaths. He ached for a cigarette. Less for the nicotine in his system and more because he felt more and more anxious. Even with El ensuring he wasn't alone. "It's not nothing. It makes me so anxious I want to smoke." Which was true, but it was also a terrible idea. The beeping on the monitor wasn't so terribly fast, but he certainly wasn't calm.
Nate glared at him over the smoking comment. "We'll be there soon. She's your daughter?" Ferris nodded and the man continued. "Just stay close to your dad and follow the stretcher once we get out," he instructed her.

Was she being a bit more difficult than necessary, yes. But was she about to just drop it all and actually let him know how freaked out and upset she was; absolutely not. At least, not when she didn’t know if he was going to actually be okay or not. That felt incredibly selfish. Not that her current prickly nature wasn’t much better. Still, when he used her first name and not her nickname, she look up at the hand he offered to her. She took the hand, knowing just that simple action helped her feel much less anxious.
“I know, and you’re right, mom’s quite tenacious.” She could help but give a half smile at that, then gave his hand a gentle squeeze. “I almost feel bad for you… you know she’s going to have a list a mile long of things she’s going to try and talk you into having checked out or tests to have done.” The thought made her shudder. Her own times as a patient, she knew just how intense her mom could be when it came to her family members be in the hospital. But thankfully, it also meant they had a very vocal advocate in their corner.
“Don’t say that in front of mom.” El shrugged, gently shaking her head, looking to Nate as he spoke again. Seeing Ferris nod made her smile. She knew he considered her his daughter, and they didn’t use the word ‘step’ in their house. Even with her friends she didn’t call him her ‘stepdad’. She gave a nod to the EMT.
————
“Okay, when we get out you two are going to have to stick with me until we find El and daddy.” Darcy said softly, knowing the ambulance would be off-loading Ferris at the ER entrance, but she’d need to park and walk the kids in. Thankfully, she had a designated parking spot for herself, so at least they didn’t have a terribly long walk. Plus, she had her badge, so they didn’t have to take the long routes around. She hadn’t intended on stopping by the hospital on her day off, but some things couldn’t be avoided. Not when your husband randomly died for three minutes with no explanation.

Sometimes, it was annoying how much their kids were like them. Just like himself in most cases and Darcy in an emergency, his oldest was sitting here trying not to show her real emotions. It was easy enough to see through her anger and snappiness (just like her mother) and know it wasn't because she was upset with him but because she was scared and didn't want him to know. Hence why he'd wanted to hold her hand. As much as he appreciated her concern and her being here, he didn't want his daughter to be anxious either. They had to help each other out.
He smiled. And there she was trying to make something serious sound funny. It was like he knew that humor from somewhere. "Yeah, well, I can't exactly argue with her. Not this time." As much as he was adamant that he was fine at the moment, Ferris knew he wouldn't have any peace knowing Darcy was worried. And he knew she would be worried until she had either ruled everything out or found her answer. So as much as he hated it and knew he'd apprehensive, he'd probably let her do anything and everything she wanted to him.
Hopefully he could convince her to let him turn that idea around on her once they were home again.
"In this case, she might give me a pass." He doubted it, but a man could hope. It wasn't as if one cigarette was going to stop his heart, after all. Probably. But while he carried a lighter, he didn't carry any smokes for a reason. Even having finally broken the major part of his habit, he still craved the action, if not the nicotine.
He'd had a long discussion with Darcy way back when and a bit with El when she was little, but that was almost nine years ago and he doubted she remembered all of it. Ferris wanted to be a father to El just as much as he would be to his own kids. But he didn't want to overstep anything. Darcy had welcomed and appreciated his desire to be so involved. He'd of course asked a few questions about El's biological father, though had both agreed at least while they were putting their family together, legal adoption wasn't necessary. Darcy had sole guardianship and it wasn't as if they would be marking decisions without the other. And then El had gotten old enough that he'd rather ask her directly if it was something she wanted but she'd never called him dad and he felt uncomfortable broaching the topic with her if she didn't feel the same way. It changed absolutely nothing about their relationship, just some of the legal issues. Such as the fact that Darcy not sharing his last name, meant she needed to show proof of them being married just to see him. And if anyone asked El her last name right now, Ferris prayed she lied and used his otherwise he'd have to explain to Darcy how he managed to lose their teenage daughter on the way to the ER. Hopefully it didn't come up.
They pulled up outside the emergency room entrance, the flashing red lights reflecting off the walls and making him only more aware of why they were here. As much as he was keeping it inside, he was still nervous, but he had plenty of other things to worry about besides himself and he preferred it that way, though the monitoring equipment made it clear he wasn't entirely relaxed. Thankfully, being wheeled into the hospital and found a space was quick and painless enough, though it being an ER, there was a lot going on. Ferris was somewhat used to it. El not so much.
Nate gave most of the info to the trauma doctor and she in turn asked Ferris for more information and went over much the same questions as they had in the bakery as he was hooked up to different machines. "I'm Hailey, by the way," the young woman said to both of them. "You're El, right? Darcy's daughter? And this must be your father? Don't worry, we'll take good care of him." She didn't pause long enough to let either of them answer but she had a studious look about her. Like she was much better at doing rather than speaking. Ferris pretended not to mind all the manhandling, doing his best to keep his eyes on El.
"Call your mom," he suggested. More to give her something to do than anything else. Also, so she could let Darcy know he hadn't died again on the way over. It was funny in his head, but he figured it best not to say to El out loud.
"Ferris? We're going to keep monitoring your heart for a bit and keep you on the oxygen. I'm also scheduling a CT scan as soon as possible. Sit tight," she informed him before leaving them in the little curtained off space. Ferris let out a breath and reached up to ran a hand through his hair and then pull the oxygen mask off. It was more the tactile memory the mask had that made him nervous.

”I mean, true. But still, hopefully she doesn’t get too intense.” El said with a grin. Knowing her mom, that wasn’t likely to be the case. Not when it came to the health of the man she loved. And sure, while El didn’t quite understand the whole ‘being in love’ angle, she did love her dad and would be devastated if anything happened to him.
She was grateful for his hand to hold and the conversation to distract her, not wanting to feel so anxious the closer they got to the hospital. Especially in the ER. Sure it was where her mom worked most often, but it was a hectic place to be even on a normal day, let alone a weekend. “Maybe, I mean it would seem pretty fair. Maybe you can have a cigarette and she can have a drink.” Okay, so it probably wasn’t something she should joke about or find humor in, but her parents didn’t lie to her about these things. In fact, they were very honest whenever El came to them with questions. She appreciated that they didn’t treat her like a child.
Once they got to the ER, a lot of her anxiousness returned, especially as she had to release his hand to let them maneuver him out of the ambulance and into the hospital. And while hospitals didn’t bother El, she wasn’t used to being in the ER. They didn’t typically make a habit of visiting her mom at work, never wanting to disrupt her if it was a busy day or distract her if she was prepping for surgery. She stayed as close to Ferris as she could while they got him situated and passed off to the doctor on duty. She offered her a half smile as she nodded her head, dark curls bouncing lightly as she did. “Yeah, mom’s on her way.” She said softly, looking to her dad as he told her to call her mom.
“Okay, but I’m not leaving you.” She insisted as she pulled her phone out of her back pocket and pressing speed dial #2, she had her dad listed as #1. Though she might not openly admit it.
————
Darcy pulled into her space and ignored the questioning looks from a few coworkers outside smoking as she unloaded Beck, choosing to carry the petite six year old and taking Rhys’ hand in her free one to head up toward the hospital’s ER entrance. Her phone started ringing and she paused outside the door, recognizing the ringtone as one she had programmed for her oldest daughter. Her heart raced. “Grab ahold of my belt loop Rhys.” She instructed as she released his hand and pulled her phone from her bag.
“Hey sweetie, we just got here… oh good, we’ll be there shortly.” Darcy was relieved to hear that he didn’t appear to have any further issues during the commute, but she still wouldn’t be at ease until she knew what happened. And while the ER staff recognized her as being one of the senior doctors on staff, one of the nurses seemed to think it would be a good idea to question her relationship to the patient in question. And if it wasn’t for her kids being present, she might have punched the girl. El came by it honestly, that fiery temper.
“Listen, you have less than thirty-seconds to get out of my way before you find yourself on the ground.” El’s head whipped around at the familiar sound of her mother’s voice and she mumbled a low “Oh shit.” under her breath, peaking out from the curtain as the nurse quickly stepped out of her way, though it looked like she might call for security. “I think she might be regretting not taking your last name.” El said with a shake of her head as she moved to take a seat in one of the chairs, looking up when her mother stood in the doorway and released Rhys’ hand. Still dutifully holding the bag with his dad’s donut in it. He moved to the side of the bed with a raised brow. “If mommy gets in a fight, will she go to jail?” He tried to ask quietly, but Darcy heard and her cheeks flushed with embarrassment.
“Okay, maybe not my finest moment.” She shrugged, handing Beck to Ellis and kissing the older girl’s forehead. “I’m going to talk to security so they don’t try to throw me out.” She shook her head, grabbing her phone out of her bag. It was ridiculous she had to prove she was his wife, but she supposed it was just a simple security measure she ought to appreciate. And she did… just not in this moment.

"Wouldn't ask you to," he confirmed, watching her pull out her phone. Ferris fiddled with the IV in the back of his hand as he listened to El explain they were both okay. He couldn't hear a word on the other end, but he knew Darcy was here. She wouldn't have answered while driving.
A nurse came back to set up another sensor for his blood pressure and chastise him about the mask which he put on and hated. He tried to take a deep breath to relax.
Ferris looked up at the sound of his wife's voice and the ripped the mask back off as El swore. "Hey," he warned. "Watch your mouth." Just because he swore didn't mean she was allowed to yet. He only shook his head at her comment about the last name. Maybe right now. But he knew she didn't normally, and he didn't regret her keeping it.
"Hey, Rhys," he murmured, reaching out to ruffle his son's hair. He still had that bag, clutched in his hand as if his life depended on it. "She's not gonna get in a fight. She loves me too much to go to jail right now." He reassured him. "Right, Darcy?" He said more directly, nodding as she said she would talk to security.
"Daddy, you're supposed to be taking a nap," Beck accused.
"I know, but I can't sleep without you, come here," he demanded gently. El let go of her little sister so Beck could attempt to climb on the bed. Ferris hauled her up by her arms and shifted over a bit so she could curl up next to him. "There we go." Hospital beds were decidedly not designed for cuddles. "Hopefully we get a room here in a minute." Since he got the feeling he wasn't going to be leaving soon if Darcy had her way but he wasn't currently having a medical emergency, so he was just taking up a bed.
Being left in charge of three kids while in a place full of bad memories after a near death experience made it hard to focus. Hard to breathe. Beck pressed against him helped a little but he couldn't shake the feeling he shouldn't be here. Shouldn't be alive. Shouldn't have moved away from his friend.
"I want up too!" Rhys said.
"In a minute, bud." Ferris said distractedly, though he could feel himself trying to mentally distance himself from the moment. As long as he stayed calm, everything would be fine.

Of course he’d scold her for swearing, she wasn’t supposed to talk like that. El frowned, but nodded. She accepted Beck from her mom and bit her bottom lip to keep herself from laughing at Rhys’ question. “Oh course, in fact; I’m gonna go apologize right now.” Darcy said with sheepish smile as she left.
Darcy didn’t intend to be away long, because she knew just how much being in a hospital would unsettle Ferris. And it likely didn’t help being left with their kids. But instead of only having to show her ‘proof’, she got pulled into a conference room and received an earful from the head nurse, head of security and chief of trauma. Of course she deserved it. They had every right to insist she leave, but under the circumstances; they just let her off with a warning about her temper and let her go back to her family.
She begrudgingly returned to the nurse’s station to give an apology to the nurse from earlier. She did it through gritted teeth, but she was angry. Still, she apologized and then made her way back to the curtain the closed off Ferris from the main room. “I’m sorry, she’s new and I guess no one warned her about how intense Dr. Vance can get.” she gave a soft shrug and eased a hand around Rhys’ shoulders, dark eyes moving to find Ferris’ very familiar grey eyes.
“Do you need anything… aside from a larger bed?” She teased, Beck clinging more tightly to her father as she watched her mom curiously. “Has Hailey already been in to tell you she’s ordered a CT?” She asked, pulling a chair closer to his bedside and patting her lap for Rhys to take a seat. He obliged, though he still wanted to join his dad and sister on the hospital bed.

While the kids are tried to overhear what was going on with their mother, Ferris simply reminded himself to breathe. So maybe the mask wasn't terrible, but it still did more to make him anxious.
Beck shifted at his side and he grunted in pain as she pressed against his ribs. "What's this?" She asked, poking one of the monitor leads.
"It helps them keep track of my heartbeat," he said vaguely, taking a few tight breaths.
"This?"
"It's a...IV. Ask your mom what it stands for. Helps make sure I take my vitamins." He knew but he was having enough trouble breathing and keeping calm.
Beck made a face at the tube. "I take my vitamins. You need to take more."
"I'll do that."
"Dad, do you want your donut?"
He looked over at Rhys leaning on the other side of bed. "Once we get a room, okay? Thanks for holding it for me." He was hungry, had been for a while but stress had put that off and now...he didn't want to eat anything for a few reasons.
Ferris looked up as his wife returned. He wanted to get up and pull her into a hug but was a bit stuck. And a hug would probably hurt. "Some people aren't into that," he said simply. Of course, he was into her intensity and she knew it, knew he was trying to flirt with her and failing. He met her gaze with a tired expression, still trying to cover up his panic.
He needed so many things right now. None of which he could say to her or in front of the kids. "Some pain meds? My chest is...it hurts. My ribs I mean," he trailed off from the expression he was about to use and opted to be more specific. "She did. Didn't say when. Not sure the plan in the meantime besides to leave me in limbo." Between the sounds of the monitoring machines all around, the noise of other spaces and conversations, he was on edge.

”Guys, you gotta take it easy on him.” El tried to interject between her siblings questions, seeing that their dad looked a touch anxious. “Beck, what if you sit with me… I’ll let you try and braid my hair?” She tried to offer, and suddenly Beck peeked at her with interest. It wasn’t often El actually let her little sister play with her hair, typically because she knotted it more than anything else. But it if would help distract her, she had to try and give her dad a break.
“Will you take pictures and send them to Polly?” She asked, and El chuckled.
“Of course.” Beck hugged her dad once more before letting her big sister pick her up and pack her to a chair.
Darcy offered a gentle shake of her head to Ferris, but she smiled at his attempt to flirt. God, she loved him so much. “That’s alright, I’ll just save my intensity for those who can handle it.” She gave him a wink, taking his hand and giving it a soft squeeze as she ran a hand through Rhys’ hair. She nodded, pressing the call button, trying to remind herself that she was here as a guest and not as his doctor right now. She didn’t need to be frightening any more of the daytime nursing staff. “I’m sorry, I had to do chest compressions until we got back a rhythm.” She felt awful that he’d gotten hurt, especially from something she was doing to save him; but sometimes it was like that. And it sucked.
“I mean, I can make a few calls and get some things expedited.” What was the point of being a senior doctor on staff if you couldn’t get somethings processed a touch more quickly. But then again, he was currently stable, and she knew he wasn’t listed high on the scale of priority compared to those who were actively bleeding or hurt.
“Now can I sit on the bed with you?” Rhys asked, sliding off Darcy’s lap and looking up at his dad rather pitifully.

Ferris relinquished his youngest daughter to his oldest with an appreciative look and a brief forced smile. So maybe his discomfort was a little more transparent than he thought. Or El was just that good at reading him at this point. He supposed she was used to him enough to know that this wasn't his calm collected usual self.
He grinned as Darcy fixed him with one of those dark eyed promises. Oh, he quite enjoyed handling her intensity, in more ways than one. She was a fighter, confident, and knew how to get what she wanted. All things he admired in a partner. Be that her pursuing her career, fighting for him, or protecting their family. She was a lioness and he adored her. Even if he wasn't so keen to let her have her way with him via tests in the hospital. "It's alright, I forgive you," he reassured. "As long as you can get me some pain meds," he added firmly. As if he wouldn't forgive her otherwise.
Darcy taking his hand was a good reminder that he was okay. That he would continue to be okay. But he knew they both knew the other was just keeping their emotions contained for the moment. He wasn't so sure what she could manipulate but even a few minutes less in here would be a relief.
Ferris nodded at Rhys and held out his hand. The boy ignored the help, pulling himself up and forcing Ferris to move his arm aside until Rhys had made himself comfortable. He shook his head in amusement.
One of the attending nurses appeared, asking if everything was okay. Ferris informed her of his chest pain, and she of course had to touch and test and have him take deep breaths with the mask on. He gave up and simply left it there once she left to see about some medication. "Whatever you can do to get me out of here," he mumbled. It was going to be a long day. Especially with the kids. He just wanted to collapse and let everything out, but he refused with them here and was terrified to do it alone. But it seemed rather cruel to leave El in charge at home or call a babysitter.

Darcy appreciated El helping entertain Beck, especially because she knew that Ferris wasn’t feeling so comfortable being in a hospital. She gave him a playful wink at his words, wanting badly to be able to better comfort him. She was still barely holding her own emotions together, though knowing they were going to be getting some answers helped her not be so terribly stressed out.
When Rhys eased off her lap she stood again, spotting Hailey up the hall a bits “I’ll be right back, like two minutes tops.” She said with a nod as she walked out of the mostly closed off space and down the hallway. Hailey looked up at her and offered a comforting smile. “I can’t get the CT pushed any earlier than in an hour, but he’s stable and I’m having a room prepped for him now.” It was almost as if she could read Darcy’s mind, she nodded, but tucked her hands in her back pockets.
“I’m going to go ahead and apologize in advance, it’s not that I don’t trust you know what you’re doing Hailey, it’s just-”
“He’s your husband; I get it. I promise not to take it personally, just so long as you promise to remember that I’m doing everything I can to help.” She gave Darcy’s arm a reassuring squeeze and she nodded. “I know he’s not going to want an MRI, but I wondered if you’d add a stress test and an echocardiogram… I just don’t understand why his heart just… stopped.” Hailey nodded, adding into the note margins of Ferris’ digital chart from her iPad.
“And he’s never had any other cardiac issues?”
“Never, not in all the times I’ve known him. And none of the medication he takes could have caused this… I’m honestly baffled Hailey.” Darcy said with a shrug, running a hand through her hair with a sigh. She didn’t like this waiting game. She was a doctor, something like this didn’t just happen for no reason. She didn’t like not having the answers, but she knew right now they just had to wait.
“Tell you what, why don’t I see if an orderly can set up one of the conference rooms for your kids while we get Ferris moved and situated? That way they have a place to be when he’s having testing done too.” Darcy nodded, knowing that they might not love the idea, but they needed to be out of the way while he got moved around and situated. “Thanks, that would be great.” Hailey gave a nod and moved on to find an orderly that wasn’t busy while Darcy turned to head back with her family. She got back at the same time as the nurse did with some pain medication for Ferris.
“Your room is almost ready, we’re just waiting on confirmation to send you up.” She said with a nod, offering him a cup of water.
“Dr. Hailey is going to have an orderly set up once of the conference rooms for the kids to watch a movie while we get you situated, She said more to Ferris than to the kids, but then ran a hand through Beck’s hair as she made a ‘braided’ mess of Ellis’ hair. “That way we can have a place to wait while daddy has those tests done and such.” This was said more for the kid’s benefit, and while El made a face that looked like she wanted to protest, one look to her mother’s face made her reconsider and simply shrug.

"Okay," he said softly. "I'll hold down the fort." He guessed she was trying to get a jump on whatever she thought needed done. Ferris trusted her, even if he would rather she just stay with him or the kids at least. It was impossible to worry about himself when they were around and it was just him in charge. Sure, El was nearly an adult, but she was still his kid and after seeing him like that...he didn't want her to worry more than she already was.
Ferris watched his daughters in the other chair. Beck seemed uncharacteristically focused on the task at hand. He wasn't so sure what she was doing were braids (even he'd had to learn how to do that). "Those look really good, Beck," he encouraged. While certainly still a mess, they were probably her best attempt yet. El gave him a dubious look. "You should let her practice more," Ferris suggested.
El rolled her eyes. "I don't see you volunteering."
"Are you implying I need a haircut?"
"Your hair is really long, dad," Rhys pointed out helpfully from where he was plastered against him.
"Your hair is really short," he shot back.
"No, it's not, I like it like this."
"And I like mine this long. See? We're both allowed to have different hair."
"I want El's hair," the six-year-old demanded, tugging a bit hard and making her sister wince. But where El normally might have snapped, she took a breath and held still.
"Beck, you aren't listening," Rhys complained. "You never listen."
"It's okay, Rhys, she's fine," he said as the nurse arrived. She checked the monitor and handed him a little cup with two pills. Which reminded Ferris that if he was going to be here for a while, and from the look on Darcy's face as she returned, he was going to be here a while, he'd need his medication. He downed the pills and then the cup of water and leaned back again. "Great, thanks," he said to the nurse.
As much as he didn't want their kids to worry, he knew El and Rhys were going to. Beck probably would too, but she needed distractions even more. "A movie? I'm jealous," he breathed. "You have to get down when they come back for the rooms, okay, Rhys?" His son groaned but it meant he had understood at least.
"Oh, it's tests plural now? I'm so lucky," he said in that usual serious teasing manner. He wanted to ask what sort of tests, but he'd wait until it was just them. He noticed El's barely concealed frustration though. "Someone's gotta watch your siblings, El. But maybe you two can trade who gets to watch me?" He suggested. Of course, he knew Darcy wanted to be there for all of them, and Ferris wasn't so sure he needed his daughter to see him like this, but if it would make her feel better...that was what mattered. it was nigh impossible for the man to worry about himself with any of his kids around. They always took center stage. Even when he felt himself tearing at the seams.

Darcy knew that El wasn’t going to be thrilled about being kept away from Ferris when he got moved, but she couldn’t leave the kids unattended. And she already felt incredibly guilty over leaving them with their eldest daughter. But she also wouldn’t mind swapping with her occasionally so she could sit with Ferris. Sometimes not having family close by made things difficult.
Family.
Suddenly she worried about what information she’d need to relay to Mara about what happened. Of course it would be better to wait until tests had been done, and for her to be able to have a conversation with her husband about what he was comfortable with her sharing, or if he wanted to be the one to make that call.
“we can absolutely swap out periodically, but let’s wait until he’s situated and we know what tests were looking at.” She offered a half smile and then shook her head as she looked to her husband. “Yes, ‘tests’ plural, because I want to be thorough and not miss anything.” She gave his hand a quick squeeze, still loosely running on her ‘doctor’ mode. She had to, if only to keep herself from reacting to the fact that she not only had to perform CPR, but had to use an AED device to restart her husband’s heart.
Multiple times.
“They’ve sent word the room is ready, we’ll let you get the kids out before we move him.” The Nurse poked her head back in to say with a polite nod, Darcy gave an affirmative shake of her head as she looked to Rhys. “Come on bud, we gotta let them get him to his room.” the eight year old frowned, but gave a sigh as he hugged his dad once again before letting his mother help him down from the bed.
“Will we get to see him in his room?” He asked softly, and Darcy’s chest tightened. She knew they were all worried and it was going to be almost impossible to get them willing to let him out of their sight. “After we get an idea on when they can do the tests, I’ll bring you guys to see him. I promise.” Leaning forward, she placed a kiss on his head and he nodded gently, El stood but was trying hard not to frown. It was clear the teenager didn’t want to leave him.
“Come on Beck, I’ll give you a piggy-back ride.” Once again, El proving just how mature and helpful she was with her little sister. Beck grinned and jumped up excitedly, clapping her hands and eagerly letting herself be hoisted onto her sister’s back. “I’m going to get them situated in the conference room, and then I’ll find you.” Darcy said softly to Ferris with a half smile, extending a hand for Rhys to hold as she guided the children out of the make-shift waiting room to let the nursing staff in to get him moved and situated in his new room.
“Come on, I’m sure we can pick something you guys will enjoy watching.” She said softly to the kids as she led them to the conference room where an orderly just finished setting up a tv and had even thoughtfully brought them a few blankets and pillows to get comfortable, reminding them that they’d be there for a little bit.

Ferris hadn't managed to spare a thought for his himself, let alone his sister. Though Darcy mentioning tests plural shifted some of that focus to himself. He knew she was right, because he didn't know any more than she did about what happened and of the pair of them, she was the smart one. The one he trusted to take care of both him and the kids. He'd do anything for her. And right now, that meant laying here and listening to the other hospital staff and agreeing to whatever tests his wife thought best. Because he didn't want this to happen again. "Alright, alright," he grumbled, squeezing her hand back.
"You can see me in a little while, Rhys, okay?" he said, patting his son on the shoulder as Darcy helped him off the bed. He had absolutely no idea when that would be, but if he had to walk down to this conference room himself just to see his kids, he would. Having a separate room was good though. The sounds around them were making him more and more on edge and he tapped his fingers against the blankets quickly. And no matter how much he loved his kids and would prefer them with him, it made letting things out tough. He really wanted a cigarette to help him calm down.
He could tell from El's frown and lack of verbal response that while she didn't particularly like his suggestion, she wasn't going to say no and risk being entirely relegated to the role of 'kid.' "Call or text me," he told her, more as a suggestion. It might not be the same as in person, but as long as he wasn't in a test, he'd answer her. El was his little girl, after all.
As Darcy and the kids filed out, he waved and offered a reassuring smile. "Have fun. I'll see you in a bit," he said firmly, eyes following Darcy's curls around the curtain. A few nurses filed in and helped make sure he was comfortable and set and then got him moving. This time, no one asked him if he wanted to walk. He didn't know enough about the hospital layout to even begin to know what room on what floor they took him to, but he knew Darcy would find him. Soon, hopefully.
Ferris was moved to a different bed, given a new IV and a glass of water and had the oxygen mask put away. The nurses gave him a gown to change into, so he'd be comfortable for the CT scan, and he said he'd have Darcy help him with it. They asked him again about his medication and dosage and he affirmed he was taking it as directed. But he knew why they asked. It was in his file. He was eventually left alone and laid back with a groan, staring up at the ceiling, looking forward to having Darcy to himself, if just for a minute.

El offered her dad at least a better attempt at a smile than Darcy was able to manage as she nodded, “I will.” She assured him as she adjusted Beck on her back and turned to follow Darcy down the hall. It wasn’t too far from where they had been, but that didn’t mean they’d be close to whatever room the staff moved their dad to. And that’s what truly left El feeling unsettled. Knowing where he was helped, and being there would be best; but being away and not knowing where he was… it left her feeling tense. And Darcy could see this.
“Hey, I’ll let you know as soon as I do where he’s been moved to. And we can swap spots so you can sit with him too.” She assured her eldest daughter with a soft smile and nod, handing El the TV remote and looking to the kids with a gentle sigh. “So, I don’t know how long everything is going to take, but just let me know when you’re hungry or if you need to use the bathroom, and once daddy is able to have you guys in the room; I’ll come back and bring you to see him again.” Rhys nodded, but Beck stuck out a lip to pout. “But I don’t want to be here… why can’t I go with you?” Those grey eyes she got from her daddy looked like they might just fill with tears at any moment.
Darcy lifted her up from El’s back and hugged her tightly for a moment. “Because mommy has to go help daddy get ready for these tests.” Beck frowned, but gave a slow nod. “Can I pick the movie?” This made Rhys groan a little and El laughed.
“Hey, how about you two play rock, paper, scissors to decide who picks?” She offered with a grin and Beck nodded, pushing herself down from her mother’s arms, ready to focus on trying to beat her brother for the movie picking privilege. Darcy gave El a smile as she slid out the door to the conference room and rested against it for a moment.
But just a moment, she didn’t have time to just sit and worry. That wouldn’t do any good. Instead, she returned to the nurses station and waited to be given Ferris’ room number. They didn’t keep her waiting long, the nurse she’d threatened before avoided meeting her gaze and kept herself busy at her computer while Darcy waited, which made her feel a bit guilty. But she didn’t have time for that either, being told the room number she gave a nod and headed for the stairs. She didn’t have the patience for elevators today. Not when people would be in it and making it stop on other floors-
No, the stairs at least gave her something to do.
It didn’t take her but five minutes to make it to his new room, and she was relieved to see that they didn’t seem to be insistent on him wearing the oxygen mask still. “Well, the kids are situated in once of the conference rooms, about to play some rock, paper, scissors to decide who gets to pick the movie…” She let the door shut behind her as she moved to the right side of the bed and tried to not look as worried as she felt. “How are you feeling?” She asked him softly, running a hand through his hair and feeling her ‘forced calm’ slipping away.
