Another early Saturday morning at the bakery.
Felicity had been there since three that morning, needing an early start because she always had a high demand for the donuts on the weekend. Of course, before opening at six, she would be joined by another three people. She really ought to see about hiring another barista, maybe another baker too…
Around four-thirty, one of the guys showed up to get the frying running. With her control issues, Felicity didn’t trust herself to handle the frying and not risk zapping it. The last thing she needed was to be trying to replace the most expensive piece of equipment in her bakery. She’d stick to making the doughs and doing the prep work. And working on her latte art, that seemed to be quite entertaining for her and the clients who weren’t in a hurry to get their coffee and go.
Thirty minutes later the other two employees showed up and Felicity began to bake the pastries for the case, already filling the case with some muffins and getting trays of the donuts that are currently finished. With the additional help, Felicity took a quick coffee break and stepped outside.
She was tense today, and that never was good for a busy day. If it was any other day, she might leave after opening. But on a Saturday… she couldn’t do that to Sofia. So, she tried to calm those nerves and just catch a breath or two before opening.
She absolutely hated Saturdays. Of course they would be busy and of course every customer wanted a very specific type of coffee and was sure to let her know she was taking too long. Thankfully by ten-thirty, she had handled enough to simply smile and shrug it off. Once the rush calmed down, she would be going home for the day. She needed to find an outlet for all the electrical energy she was full of lately.
But instead, she put on that friendly smile, swapped out her gloves and moved to package the next order and make the next coffee order, leaving the register to Sofie for the time being.

Ferris normally liked to let the kids sleep in on Saturdays, not really bothering to get up until they woke him up. Because that meant he and Darcy got some time to sleep together. But after the long week he knew his wife had, as much as she needed sleep, she needed family time more.
He rolled over in bed and kissed her awake gently. "When you get up, we're going to the bakery so we can watch our youngest daughter cover herself in icing." Even at six, Beck was a disaster with food. But that wasn't the entire point. He thought it would be good to get them all out of the house together. From there, he made sure the kids harassed him rather than their mother, helping them get dressed and turning away questions of breakfast with things like "I thought we might try fasting" (and then having to explain what that was to the younger two) or "We're out of cereal" (when they definitely weren't.) El seemed to understand that meant they were going to go out to eat, so she slipped away to find her mother. The other two found this hilarious.
Once everyone was ready, it was already 10am, plenty long after the morning rush, though he still trusted the local bakery to have fresh goods. It wasn't the first time they had been to Wild Child Bakes, it had just been a while.
"I want donits!"
"Doughnuts," El emphasized. Ferris tried really hard not to laugh.
"Donits!"
Rhys didn't join in the argument in the SUV, but he did seem amused by his sisters.
He parked out front and helped the younger two out of the car, though Rhys very quickly brushed off any and all help. And he thought El didn't like him sometimes. Once they were inside, he reached over to Darcy to pull her against him with a grin. "So, I know this doesn't compare to sleep, but hopefully this is fun?"

While Darcy might have gotten out of work earlier the night before, thanks largely in part to regulations on her number of hours allowed for the week; she still had thought they would have slept in a bit more. She’d managed to get off work at 4:30AM, instead of her usual 7AM. “Pourquoi si tôt, mon amour ?” She murmured sleepily as she felt his kiss on her lips, stretching her arms above her head as she peeked an eye open at his words, a smile pulling across her lips as she registered what he was meaning. “Je t'aime!” she said softly as he headed out of the room to begin tending to the children.
Darcy truly was quite the lucky woman, she had a husband who more than helped with the kids and insisted she get extra rest when possible, but also knew when they needed the time together as a family. When her coworkers complained about their husbands, she effectively tuned out because she sincerely couldn’t relate. Ferris was amazing, plain and simple.
It wasn’t long after his leaving that she heard the kids up and moving, so Darcy eased herself out of the bed and into her closet. She settled on a pair of jeans shorts that she knew El would argue we’re ‘too short for a mom to wear’, and a white tank top, pulling a burgundy knit sweater on over it, slipping on a pair of flats and glancing up when there was a knock at the door before El’s face peeked in.
“Do you think after breakfast we can go to the park or the beach?” She asked, then frowned at her mom’s outfit. “Unless you’re wearing those shorts…”
Have kids, they said. It’ll be fun, they said. More like it’ll emotionally scar you for life.
“Oh come on, they’re just shorts.” this of course just made El roll her eyes, before grinning. “If you can wear them, so can I.” Shit. Darcy had her there. So, she stepped back into her closet and swapped into a pair of jeans. This made El laugh, but at least she approved of being seen with her now. After El left to get dressed, the pair joined the rest of the family downstairs.
The conversation in the vehicle was definitely entertaining, to say the least. Darcy sucked in her bottom lip to fight from laughing, refusing to look at Ferris because she’d absolutely burst into laughter if she did. Instead, she kept her gaze out the window and just focused on breathing through her nose so she didn’t laugh.
She watched as El purposefully got out of the other side of the car so she could pull the hood of her jacket up and try to look like she wasn’t with them. Oh, teenagers were so fun.
Once inside, Darcy grinned as Ferris pulled her against him, noting how El exaggerated a gag and pointed toward a table. “Just get me a cruller.” She murmured as she stalked off to the table, pulling her phone out of her pocket as she sat at a table that could seat them all.
“I would trade all the sleep for moments like this with you guys.” She said with a soft smile, giving his cheek a gentle caress as they moved forward through the line. When they finally got to the counter, Beck was pointing at the chocolate supposed donuts and Rhys was looking, trying to make up his mind. Darcy offered a smile to the petite blonde behind the counter, the young woman looked like she’d experienced a week of Saturdays so far this morning. And still managed a smile to them as she asked what they’d like. “Two French crullers, a chocolate iced with sprinkles, a raspberry filled bismark, and two maple iced donuts please. Oh, a medium coffee and four hot chocolates.”

As the line dwindled down, Felicity gave Sofie the go ahead for her break as she pulled on a pair of fresh gloves when some kids and clearly their patents stepped forward to place an order. She gave a friendly smile, noting how the boy had the same eyes as the brunette, while the little girl had grey eyes like the man. For someone who was rather against bringing children into the world herself currently; she found it adorable how these tiny humans looked like model miniatures of their parents. It was sweet.
“What can I get you?” She shot the girl a bright smile as she managed to point toward a chocolate iced donut with sprinkles, without touching the glass. What manners, Felicity thought to herself as the curly hairs brunette smiled and didn’t miss a beat in giving the desired flavors for everyone. Yeah, she was definitely a mom. Though… Felicity shamelessly noted neither of them wore wedding bands. She grabbed a white box for the half dozen donuts listed and began to place them in the box, separated by sheets of wax paper sheets.
The young girl waved and pointed at the donuts to what Felicity could only assume was an older sister. This one definitely favored her mother, and looked like she wanted to be anywhere but there. Ah, to be a teenager again.
She finished packing the box and raised a brow. “For the hot chocolates, do you want classic, dark or white?” She set the donut box on the counter beside the register and grabbed out a medium cup to make the coffee.

He knew he was asking a lot of his wife so early. But he'd make time for her to get more sleep if she needed it later. He tried extra hard to be there for his family, especially Darcy. She'd been a single mom for years. He couldn't imagine doing what she did. She was his hero in a lot of ways, both with their family and personally. She was the reason he was still here, and he wasn't shy of telling her that.
Ferris watched his oldest daughter find a table, not surprised she wasn't interested in standing next to them. Her fake gagging was a little much and earned a frown. It wasn't as if they were making out in public. He could certainly give her something to gag about if he had a mind to. "Good. There anything else you want to do this morning?" he asked as they waited.
While he could have guessed what donut everyone wanted, and ordered it, part of the fun (at least for the younger ones) was seeing all the donuts and knowing they could pick any one they wanted. And the bakery always had a really pretty display that made him want to try other things. He really should stop by before work more often.
He smiled back at the woman behind the register and pulled out his wallet from his jeans pocket, pulling the red flannel shirt out of the way while Darcy ordered. Ferris grinned to himself as she got two maple donuts. He really shouldn't eat two. "You trying to tell me to work out more or less with that, I can't tell." He meant it as a joke, but Ferris had this way of speaking in a flat, dry tone very close to his usual when it came to humor. Darcy at least knew him well enough.
“Classic for all of them,” he said. “They aren't too picky,” he added with a chuckle. He took the box off the counter and handed it to Beck, pointing her toward her sister. "You two take your mom and sit down. I'll wait for the drinks," he ordered gently. There was no way in hell the kids were going to let the donut box out of their sight. And while he trusted them not to behave like animals and the place wasn’t very crowded, he didn’t want to leave them without a mediator.
“You're the owner, right?” He asked, looking back at the woman and glancing over her name tag. He'd seen her in here enough times to guess. “Really lovely place you got. I need to stop by more often.” Support local businesses and all that.

“El asked about going to the-” She paused, thinking better of saying either options aloud around the two smaller kids. “La plage ou un parc.” She said a bit more softly for his hearing, hoping Rhys was more focused on the donut case than on hearing what she had to say. He shot a curious glance back at her, but seemed to decide against commenting on her language swap. The downside of having such bright children; they actually wanted to learn another language. So much for being able to speak without them understanding.
Even Darcy was impressed by the children refraining from leaving fingerprints on the case, smiling at the blond and then nodding in agreement with Ferris. She didn’t even realize hot chocolate started having a variety of options too, but even she’d admit they sounded delightful… if once enjoyed drinking liquid sugar. There was a reason why her coffee was ordered black.
She gave his arm a gentle swat as she shook her head. “I couldn’t possibly just be evening up the number to six, could I?” She teased, gently shaking her head. And then he was handing the donut box to Beck and giving them orders to take her to the table. She smiled, giving him a playful wink as she felt Rhys’ hand slip into hers as he gently tugged her in the direction of El and the table she’d selected.
Of course the sight of the majority of her family rejoining her earned an eye roll, but even Darcy noticed How her brow furrowed and she looked back toward the counter seeing Ferris. “He’s waiting for the hot chocolates and paying, go ahead.” Darcy gave a gentle nod of encouragement to her as Beck slid the box to her before climbing onto the chair beside her sister. Rhys released his mother’s hand to pull out her chair.
She thanked him as she eased into the chair and couldn’t help but feel pride at how El opened the box and handed Beck her chocolate dipped donut with sprinkles, the raspberry bismark being set down on a napkin and in front of the seat she assumed her brother would take, and then offering her mother one of the crullers and raising a brow curiously at her. “Are you good mom?” She asked, her tone only vaguely dressed with concern, she pulled the second cruller out and took a bite.
“Je suis parfaitement heureuse, ma fille chérie.” Darcy said with a soft smile as she took the offered cruller, smiling as she took a bite. “Si tu le dis, maman.” She responded with a casual shrug, though she was clearly trying hard not to look as though she were enjoying herself too much. She wouldn’t gladly give up sleep for moments like this.

Okay, so this pair had some of the most well behaved children she had ever seen in her bakery. The way the children behaved made her oddly nostalgic for a time when she was younger and grinning up at her dad as he’d purchase them some donuts holes and strawberry milk, then they’d go to the park and spend half the day looking for four-leaf clovers.
She cleared her throat with a nod as she was told classic hot chocolates and gave a smile as she returned to the task of making up the drinks. Why did seeing happy families always make her miss her dad? She couldn’t help but give a half smile as the kids dutifully walked their mom to the table and began to divvy out the pastries. And she knew exactly why she missed him; because she was a different type of happy when he was alive. Not that she wasn’t or hadn’t been happy since the accident, but she just… wasn’t quite the same after it all. And thinking about that time usually brought on-
Yes, there it was. That dull ache in her head. Something she had been assured was just due to her own injuries sustained in the accident. Felicity pushed the thoughts from her mind, not wanting to upset her already delicate handle on her ability. She didn’t need to replace any more equipment. Especially not when there wasn’t even a storm to blame it on.
Instead, she finished the first two hot chocolates and turned to set them on the counter, dark eyes taking in the man as he spoke. She paused her task and nodded. “I am. We’ve been in business a little over two years now.” She said with a softer smile, clearly proud of her little place. “Hey, I appreciate the repeat business. We’ve even got a little customer card where you get a free half dozen every ten purchases.” She gave a nod toward the register, where a little card holder sat with the ‘frequent customer discount’ cards.
So she didn’t notice wedding bands, but they seemed too comfortable to simply be good at co-parenting. But she’d be lying if she said she didn’t hope to see him stop by more frequently. Felicity ought to kick herself, she needed to get her head out of the gutter and use that dating app. Hitting on customers wasn’t going to be getting her anywhere, not when they came in with their children and the lovely mother of said children. Her father would have been mortified. “Oh, will anyone want mini marshmallows with their hot chocolates?” She blurted out more suddenly than she intended, finding herself a touch frazzled.

Ferris only hummed softly to let Darcy know he had heard her about their next stop. He preferred the beach. Not because he wanted to go swimming or enjoyed having to shake Rhys up and down to get him free of sand, but if they could walk a ways down, it was actually really peaceful. The park was usually just as crowded and there as less space to get away, but at least there was less sand and water.
"Congrats on two years then," he noted with a smile, moving slightly to the side and leaning on the counter. He followed her gesture to the discount cards and picked one up. Considering the half dozen was the perfect size, even if he only stopped by once a week, that was plenty worth it. "That makes repeat business even easier," he said, sliding the card into his wallet. It was a slim, wood card holder the kids (Darcy) had gotten him last holidays. It only held a few cards, so anything else usually ended up in the glove box, often forgotten. Though he really did mean to stop by more. He might not like coffee, but this was a bakery, not a Starbucks.
Of course, he noticed Felicity was pretty. She was a slender, cute little thing and he'd always had a preference for blondes. But the lack of a wedding ring was no more invitation for others to flirt with him than it was an allowance for him to do more than look. Besides, he was busy trying to figure out lunch and if he could fit in taking his truck for an oil change today or tomorrow and he was pretty sure someone had a sports game or something tomorrow morning.
"I think three of us might," he said, looking up from his wallet. The younger two would. El he was less sure, so he'd give her the option and drink whatever was left. He offered the woman a reassuring smile. She seemed nervous. "No rush. I appreciate it," he said, pulled a few singles from the metal clip and placed them in the tip jar by the register.

“Thank-you, I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t proud of the place.” Brown eyes glanced around the interior of the building and she couldn’t help but feel a sense of pride. Despite the hurdles thrown her way, she had indeed made her business ‘dream’ into a reality. And while it could be demanding, and more often than not she was nursing a hangover from the previous night’s shenanigans; Felicity quite enjoyed her set up.
Especially since returning from helping her grandmother. It was nice to get back into the flow of her chaotic life. She didn’t like the quiet and calm, she missed her partying ways and her friends. Though, friends was a term used quite loosely. As most people knew the bare minimum when it came to her and she liked it that way. Easy breezy.
Her eyes filtered back to the attractive man as he leaned against the counter and took one of the cards. Why did that make her smile? Why was she looking forward to the thought of him being a frequent customer? “I thought it was a good idea, my favorite book store started doing something like that and I thought ‘why not?’. It just makes sense.” she said with a nod, forcing her gaze back on the two other cups she was working on and half noticing a quizzical look being shot in her direction from what she assumed was his oldest daughter.
Damn, she just needed to get laid. Get it out of her system so she stopped drooling over any attractive man or woman who walked in the bakery doors. She should call Tawny, plan a night of fun and maybe find a date on that app. Checking out her customers in front of their kids was not something she needed to make a habit of.
“Alright, and thanks.” Cute and patient, why weren’t more of the men who came in for coffee and pastries like that? I mean, there was Mason. The cute EMT, but she likely wasn’t even on his radar. Not to mention, she only had seen him twice. She definitely needed to get out more.
Felicity set the other two hot chocolates with the rest of his drinks and grabbed the shaker with mini marshmallows, adding them in three of the hot chocolates and then raising a brow. “Whipped cream?”

He followed her gaze around the shop. It was small, but in a cozy sort of way. The color scheme was maybe a bit too bright for him, but it certainly leaned on the name. Being a bit wild and childish was okay. He nodded. "Good business drive. Doesn't hurt when some folks forget after the seventh visit, eh?" She likely punched more cards than she gave out half dozens of donuts. Whether he would fall into that trap too he wasn't sure. Doubtful, considering one of the kids would manage to remind him about wanting donuts on a monthly basis.
This time Ferris caught her looking back at him and her looking away just as quickly. So clearly she liked looking too, it wasn't a crime. It was just a little weird. A lot weird. He pushed himself up from the counter, pocketing his credit card for the moment to carry Darcy's coffee over to the table and set it down in front of her. "I'll be right back," he said, ruffling Beck's hair. Her face was already covered in frosting and she had some in her blonde curls. "With some napkins," he added. "El, you wanna split that other maple with me?"
He walked back to the counter as Felicity set down the drinks and added the marshmallows, looking up at the whipped cream offer. "Best not. Just gonna end up on your floor." He was already a little embarrassed about the mess, but they'd clean up the table and chairs at least. He pulled the card back out and offered it to her.

Damn, he had a sense of humor too. “I mean, am I terrible if I admit that it does happen?” She managed a cheeky smile shaking her head as she added. “Depending on the customer, if it’s someone I see all the time I’m more likely to ensure they get that free half-dozen.” She shared before returning to the task of the hot chocolates.
Felicity could help but let her glance trail after him, if just to watch how he interacted with his kids. Not at all to check out his ass. But seeing how they all interacted with one another did make her feel a touch guilty for her wandering thoughts. Her gaze returned to the hot chocolates as she grabbed the lids.
“Hey, wouldn’t be the first time, and it won’t be the last. But I appreciate the sentiment.” She said with a soft smile as she pushed the lids on each cup and set them in a drink carrier to make it easier on him. “A half dozen assorted donuts, one medium black coffee and four classic hot chocolates, your total is…” Felicity pulled off the gloves as she moved to the register and tapped a few buttons, total popping up on the screen a moment later. The dull headache returning and she was suddenly wishing Sofia was back from her break and handling the register.
“$20.25.” Felicity looked up to see him holding out his card and she gave a polite nod as she reached forward to take the card and almost immediately wishing she could jerk her hand back. That awfully familiar feeling, like when you suddenly found yourself able to release a breath you’d been holding in for too long, crept up her spine and before she could stop it; a jolt of electricity corded through her shoulder, arm, and outreached hand to where her fingers just barely brushed across his while taking his card. The electrical jolt passing through her and effortlessly into his hand.

He grinned. He didn't blame her in the slightest for trying to remind people. She ran a business and was trying her best, after all. She couldn't possibly remember everyone, after all.
Ferris nodded along as she reread the order summary and gave him the total. "Sounds great." The price for a family of five to eat breakfast made him suddenly very glad he had tipped the woman.
While he'd been in plenty of accidents before, Ferris had never been electrocuted beyond a little static shock. He didn't really know what that might feel like. He certainly wasn't expecting that feeling or any other when the woman's fingertips just touched his while she took the card from his hand. It was too fast for him to comprehend. Lightning travelled at the speed of light, up his left arm, to his chest, and then down his left leg to his boot.
One moment he handed her his credit card, the next his chest exploded in intense but brief pain. His hand spasmed as he let go of the plastic and slammed on the counter to hold himself up. He gripped his shirt with his right hand, even as the pain went away.
The next moment he stood there for a second, suddenly dizzy and light-headed, trying to balance himself on the counter and feeling more discomfort than pain in his chest. He could tell something was wrong, but he wasn't sure what and couldn't focus.
Another moment after that he blacked out. Ferris collapsed against the counter and then crumpled to the floor, an unconscious heap on the ground. Thankfully he didn't slam his head against too hard on the way down. But with no pulse and no breathing and a heart currently in cardiac arrest due to ventricular fibrillations, a concussion was the least of his worries.

It was so crazy how much she felt like she missed moments like this. Beck grinning her chocolate coated smile while licking chocolate off her fingers, the icing even in some of her blonde curls. But the joy in those grey eyes. Yeah, she’d easily give up sleep for moments like these. She sipped on her coffee, taking another bite of her cruller while El pulled one of the maple donuts into two relatively even pieces, grinning as she took the half that was slightly bigger and took a bite. Rhys was the only one who seemed to manage to keep his hands free from glaze, whether from using a napkin or from liking it off his fingers; Darcy couldn’t be certain. But they were all happily munching on their sugary pastries and she couldn’t help but feel like this moment was pretty close to perfect.
And then, that moment ended.
While reaching to try and tackle Beck’s face with a napkin, El’s face dropped. No longer lit up by a grin and amusement at her siblings antics, instead replaced by a look that Darcy would classify as pure panic. Before Darcy could turn her gaze to see what she was looking at, she heard the thud of someone falling while El dropped her donut. “Dad!”
Darcy’s heart jumped into her throat. El wasn’t the over-dramatic one. That was typically Beck. Her head finally whipped around and Darcy’s body was reacting on pure impulse and adrenaline at the sight of her husband on the ground. “Stay with your siblings!” She said almost breathlessly, causing El to stop from stepping forward to follow her mom. Instead stepping beside Rhys’ and Beck’s seats to put an arm around each of them.
“Why is Daddy on the floor?” Darcy could hear Beck ask, but she was pulling off her sweater to roll and place under his head and patting his face as she checked for a pulse, and checked his pupils; she could feel the blood draining from her face as her brow pinched. “Ferris… baby come on-” She glanced up to the blonde barista who looked as if she might pass out herself.
“He’s not breathing and doesn’t have a pulse, do you have an AED?” She snapped quickly, checking his airway and then moving his shirt as she began to start compressions. “Someone call for an ambulance!” Darcy had been in situations like this more time than she could count. But not with her husband as the patient. Seeing him like this was almost enough to make her slip out of her calm and controlled mental space. Even if traffic wasn’t bad, their response time wouldn’t be promising.
But then she heard it.
The distinct sound of children sniffling. Her kids. Their kids. She leaned forward to blow a breath, a second, and third into his mouth before she moved back to continue compressions. “Merde, respire bébé!” She cursed in French, not wanting her children to hear her. There was no way in hell she was going to stop before either she got his pulse back, or an ambulance showed up to take over.

Felicity felt like everything happened in slow motion. She could almost imagine seeing the electricity pulse through his body and her face went near white as he leaned against the counter first, and then collapsed to the floor. His older daughter shouted first, then in a flurry of movement and with more command than she would have expected from the woman whose husband just collapsed while in line paying for donuts and drinks; the dark curly haired woman was checking him over and speaking.
Wait, she was speaking to her now! Felicity snapped out of it, dropping his card on the counter and nodding as she hurried back to the kitchen. On the back wall was a mounted AED machine, suddenly glad she had opted to have one on hand. Granted, she’d never used one before. But that wasn’t so much of a concern as his female companion seemed more than capable.
Felicity rushed back to the front room, not letting herself spare a glance at his poor children. They had to be terrified… and it was all her fault.
“I-I’ve never used it.” She stammered out as she set the device down and let the woman talk her through opening it and placing the pads. The brunette had already opened his flannel and she told her where to place each pad; one on his right upper chest by his collar bone, the other one needed to be on his left ribs going around his side.
Felicity had never felt so fearful as she helped, better at managing her ability since the first outburst. The last thing they needed was for her to shock him again. With an AED it was a controlled shock, her ability was not. Far from it, actually. She watched as the woman breathed into his mouth few times before she sat back up and looked to her. “When I count to three, I want you to push the orange button… but on my count, so I’m not touching him.”
This woman had to be a doctor, or some form of emergency responder. She was way too calm for a parent trying to bring back her significant other in front of their crying children. Shit, the kids. Even if she didn’t dare look at them, she could hear the little girl sobbing.
“The ambulance is en route, they said about six minutes.”
“Felicity, eyes on me.” Her brown eyes met the dark eyes of the brunette, how was she so calm?! “One… two… three.”
As she pulled her hands away, Felicity pressed the button, watching as the pads sent an electric shock through his chest. The woman leaned forward, checked for his pulse and continued compressions for enough time to allow the machine time to charge for another pulse. “One… two... three.” And once again, Felicity pressed the button and watched the man get another shock to his chest. If she had been the religious type, she might have found herself pleading with the powers that be to let this man just breathe again.

Thankfully one of the other customers called 911. They were able to give the address, but couldn’t provide much else except that a man had collapsed and wasn’t breathing. But it was enough.
Beck half fell out of her chair to try and chase their mother, forcing El to jump after her. The teenager grabbed her sister around the waist and pulled her around, doing her best to prevent Beck from looking at where her own hazel eyes couldn’t seem to pull away from. The image of their mother crouched over their father’s lifeless body, trying to help him breathe.
Beck might be bawling her eyes out because she didn’t understand, but Rhys did. When both his mother and his big sister were worried, it was bad. He knew what CPR looked like. He’d never seen the other little machine before, but he noticed how it made their dad twitch and El hold her breath every time. He got up and grabbed his older sister’s hoodie in one hand and her hand with the other. “Dad’s not okay, is he?” he asked quietly.
El shook her head and wiped her sleeve over her face. “He’ll be okay.” He had to be okay.
Ferris was unresponsive for the first two shocks. With the third, his heart shuddered back to a semblance of a pulse for a moment before devolving again. With the fifth, his pulse finally held steady, if weakly. He remained unconscious for the moment, breathing shallowly as blood flow returned.
