[for Bridget Lacey]
The last time they really talked, Bridget had mentioned something about working on a cult of some sort. Ferris couldn’t deny he was curious to know more.
When she sent him an email about meeting up to talk about her next steps, he was also eager for any excuse to get away from his desk. Even if right now that just amounted to walking to her desk on the other side of the office. It was a start, but he was eager to get moving if there was really something she needed his help with.
Ferris had to do a lap to find Bridget’s desk, having never actually talked to her there. Plus he was really bad with putting names and faces together so he entirely overlooked her the first time and felt a bit sheepish about it, whether she noticed or not. He leaned lightly on the partition wall, waiting for her to look up or at least finish what she was working on.
“Hey, Bridget,” he greeted. He hesitated at first. As much as he wanted to ask what the email was about, he wasn’t entirely business. “How’s the paperwork? De nouveaux affaire intéressants?”

[nospaces][googlefont=Hurricane] [break] [attr="class","BRID"] The morning had started a few hours earlier than Bridget had planned. Her phone started ringing at just past three in the morning. Groaning, she rolled over and saw ‘LEPD’ flashing on the screen. With a grumble, she picked up the call and began the process of dragging herself out of bed for the hostage call out. [break][break] Why were they in the middle of the damned night so often? [break][break] Thankfully, it was nearly over by the time she got there. A little over an hour later, she was packing up. Going back to bed would have been a fruitless endeavor, so she went for her morning jog then showed, changed, and got to the office a couple hours ahead of schedule. [break][break] Not that she wanted to tackle the few files left on her desk first thing in the morning, but she’d made so much progress on her backlog of paperwork and follow up cases that they were all that was left. [break][break] Opening the first file, she got to work entering the data that she’d been neglecting. She kept going through files until there was only one left on her desk. A follow up that she needed to go out and do. This one was going to involve a surprise visit, maybe someone the guy wouldn’t recognize. Someone like Ferris. She’d mentioned the case to him before, and he’d seemed interested enough. Bridget sent Ferris a quick email asking him to meet with her when he had the time, then she got up to grab a cup of coffee. [breakk][break] Caffeine was going to be the only way she was going to make it to five o’clock today. [break][break] Once her coffee cup was filled, she went back to her desk and opened the file, staring at the pages she’d written the first time she’d been called out to deal with this guy. Supposedly, he was on the straight and narrow now. She hadn't had any more calls about his shenanigans, but she also wasn’t stupid enough to think that meant he was being a model citizen. More likely, he’d just gotten better at staying under the radar. Which was where the follow up was going to come in handy. When she heard her name, Bridget looked up from the file and smiled. “Pas grand chose. Juste cette suite, la secte dont j'ai parlé plus tôt.” She closed the file and handed it to Ferris so he could look at the details. “Are you still interested in helping me pay him a visit to check up on things?” [break][break] Ferris Felwinter | let me know for changes [break][break] Translation: [break] “Nothing much. Just this follow up, the cult I mentioned before.” [break][break]

The warm aroma of coffee greeted him as Bridget looked up from her desk. He wasn't sure if her smile was for the French or actually for him. Not that it really mattered. She looked tired. Maybe that was why she needed the coffee. Considering her actual job could be quite a bit more of a handful, he didn't poke her about it. He trusted she could manage herself and that she wouldn't push beyond her limits.
"Cult sounds much less foreboding when said in French," he pointed out. He meant it to be funny, but his tone was flat and much closer to serious. He was terrible as humor. Or maybe just very good at it.
Ferris took the offered file, steeling himself for what he might find. Most of it seemed rather standard. At least the goal this time around, just a check in, sounded easy. Not something Bridget would need a partner for normally. "Something tells me you don't believe this secondary report. About your man relinquishing his old way," he observed without looking up as he continued to read. "What are we looking for exactly," he asked. He used 'we' rather than directly answer her question, more than thrilled to be invited on the call. He hadn't expected that to be right now, so it was a pleasant surprise.
He'd have to find another time to work on his other cases, but there wasn't anything pressing and to be honest, he was waiting on replies for other parties for a lot of them anyway.
