You romanticize the feast and famine Paralyzed by fear of failing Birthdays hadn't been the same in a long time. Not since Bianca died. When her parents could be bothered to remember her birthday the most they would do is give her money to go buy something she wanted. Or send her out to dinner with some of the friends they approved of. Bianca used to jump on her bed at exactly midnight. She'd bounce and scream Happy Birthday to her, usually waking up the rest of the house. She'd make her a cake and they'd spend the day together down at the beach or go to the drive in together. This time she still wound up down at the beach but it didn't feel the same. Her friend Beanie had decided to throw her a big party with a bonfire and plenty of people Katrina didn't really know. It had been a surprise party that had actually startled Katrina when they got to the beach and everyone yelled happy birthday. There was part of her that wanted to have fun. It was so sweet someone remembered her birthday and she was really grateful to have a friend like Bea. But everything felt off. There was music playing, people talking and laughing. There was drinking and food ranging from pizza to some roasted hotdogs over the open fire and smores. But this felt like less a party for her and more an excuse for people to just party. A few of her friends had tried to get her to drink with them which made Katrina's stomach twist in knots. "I...um...well I don't think..." It was Bea that stepped in and distracted them so that Katrina could slip away without having to touch the alcohol. Eventually she moved down the beach as the sun began dipping under the horizon. The sky was painted in soft orange that reminded her of sherbert icecream mixed with such a pretty lavender color. As she stared up at the shifting colors Katrina wrapped her arms around herself to rub her hands up and down her bare arms. She really wished she'd brought a sweater or something with her. She really wished Bianca was with her. It felt like there was a void in the air around her. A space her sister should have been taking up. Bianca would have loved the party. She would have been dancing and laughing and mingling with the others. A social butterfly while Katrina still just felt like a caterpillar. So she sat there. In that empty space that should have been taken up by her sister. Staring at the sky as the clouds shifted and rolled over head. Changing with the colors that turned from more orange to more purple. Tag: Open Kinda late birthday post for my sunshine girl but I made it! lol

[nospaces] [attr="class","GENIELyrics"] Somewhere, this fate, I lost control[break] We count the days scratching lines on a wall. Wait in the wings at someone's beck and call. [break] No longer recognize the place that I call home. No longer recognize this face as my own. [break] [attr="class","GENIEBody"]
((CW: self harm mentions))[break][break]
The standard mid summer vacations meant it was one of the busiest times of the year for Genie at her day job. The temp agency was sending her to a new office every few days to a week. Most of the time, she didn’t mind. The worst part about it was meeting all the people who wanted to talk to her, wanted to get to know her. She’d never been good at small talk, and it was exhausting trying to pretend. So, instead of going to work today, she called out sick. [break][break]
It wasn’t like she ever felt guilty for it. In fact, part of the reason she worked at the temp agency to begin with. It didn’t make much difference if she didn’t show up, they just called out the next person on the list. They were used to her being flaky and calling out several days at a time. She already knew she’d be calling out tomorrow as well, because she planned on spending the evening out at the beach, enjoying the sunset. [break][break]
She’d been at the beach for a little while now, floating out in the ocean and forgetting the world existed. She’d left her towel, long sleeved cover up, flip flops, phone and car keys on the shore in an area that had been secluded from the rest of the beach goers. As she exited the water, heading back toward her belongings, she noticed a girl walking her direction, leaving a party nearby. Genie glanced at the party. Even from this far away, she could hear laughter and loud conversations wafting through the air. It seemed like a lot, like it could easily become overwhelming. [break][break]
Genie didn’t pay the girl much mind. She picked up one of her two towels to dry off. She felt exposed, and she wasn’t fond of the feeling. In the water, it wasn’t as big of an issue. But now she was back on land, and couldn’t pull the white lace dress over her swimsuit soon enough. Her tattoo wouldn’t be hidden by the lace, but the still healing red lines on the inside of her upper left arm would be obscured. [break][break]
Once she had the cover up on, she used the towel to wring some of the water out of her hair, then spread it out on the sand to sit, without getting herself completely covered. The world was shifting colors, and she couldn’t help but appreciate the soft orange and lavender hues that streaked the sky like cotton candy, reflecting from the soft clouds that speckled the atmosphere. Genie pulled up the camera on her phone and snapped a couple pictures as the sun began its descent below the horizon. She knew the images would never be as beautiful as the actual moment, but it would be enough to bring back the memory. [break][break]
While she’d been taking the pictures, the girl had gotten closer. There was something familiar about her, something Genie couldn’t quite place from far away. As she walked nearer, though, the familiarity nagged at her. It didn’t seem like the girl was paying her any mind, so with a quick glance around, Genie made sure no one was looking before she turned invisible. [break][break]
Getting up and walking quietly, she was careful to disrupt as little sand as possible on her way, hoping any footsteps would remain as unnoticed as she’d been before she disappeared. She got close enough to get a better look at the girl. It took a moment, but the puzzle started to become clear. It had been just about eight years, so of course she’d changed significantly, but her face looked almost the same. This had to be Katrina Wells. [break][break]
Genie had stayed with the Wells family for a part of a few summers in a row, between the ages of thirteen and seventeen. Genie had been angry when she was with the Wells family, not to mention how she felt about Jeremy Wells. When she’d moved to Los Eurosia, she’d never even given it a thought to seek any of them out. But she remembered Kat as being sweet and kind, nearly inseparable from her sister, Bianca. Genie got along the best with Bianca, the only one who openly seemed to understand what Jeremy was doing to them, but she ended up spending the most time with JJ, training and being sent on assignments together. [break][break]
She made her way carefully back far enough to not startle Kat, and let the invisibility drop before walking back over. [break][break]
”Kat?” She called out as she approached, honestly not sure if the girl would even remember her. She’d been what, eleven or twelve the last time they saw each other? It had truly been a long time.

You romanticize the feast and famine Paralyzed by fear of failing Katrina was normally a very observant person. Mostly due to her own anxiety. Her eyes would pick crowds for familiar faces at all times. Or someone who might be paying at bit too much attention to her. Just in case she had to worry about someone that might tell her parents where she was and what she was up to without their permission. Or worse yet that it might just be one of her parents in the crowd of faces. She was always painfully aware when someone was too close to her. That creeping feeling she'd get up her spine and the unease that would twist her stomach into knots. Always keenly aware when there were eyes on her that shouldn't be. She tried paying less attention to any beach goers that went about their day. Most of them had started to thin out. Going home to start dinner or heading out to get some drinks after a nice day with friends. The few that remained on the beach were either people that were alone it seemed or the odd couple that seemed to stay to watch the sunset. She didn't blame them. The colors looked like a melted popsicle on a hot side walk. Or those pour paintings that she and her sister used to do. When they would take different colored paints in cups and pour them on blank canvases. Moving the canvas around in various directions to watch the way the colors dripped and bled into each other. The patterns and swirls they would make was always fascinating to Katrina. Her train of thought was interrupted when she got that feeling of eyes on her. That feeling that made her sit a little straighter as she looked around for someone who was going to tattle on her. But there was no one. There was still her friends all enjoying the bonfire together in the distance. But it didn't seem like there was anyone there. Perhaps she was just too on edge. Katrina pushed that feeling away and tried to go back to simply enjoying the sunset. Until she heard her name. Katrina blinked at the sound of the voice as she turned around. Why did it sound familiar? Her eyes squinted at the woman who approached her as she tried to shift through her catalogue of familiar faces. The woman wasn't immediately recognizable at first which was more concerning than it otherwise would have been. Now she felt bad and nervous. But there were plenty of other Kat's in the world. Maybe it was just a coincidence? As she got closer though the recognition hit. Katrina knew where she remembered that voice and bright red hair! "Genie?" She asked questioningly. It had been years since she'd last seen Genesis. The woman had stayed with her family on and off for a few summers when she was a child. For reasons Katrina couldn't quite remember. Bianca had been really close with her though. And it had seemed JJ had been too. Though he always seemed a little on edge whenever they'd been together and Katrina never knew why. Still, she let a bright smile cross her lips as she moved closer to meet the woman half way. "Genesis?" She asked again, though a little more certain this time. "Long time no see!" She said with a bit more excitement and a warm smile. What had it been, seven? Eight years? The last time they saw each other Katrina hadn't even been in high school yet. The last time they saw each other Bianca had still been alive. "I didn't know you were back in los Eurosia," she said in an attempt to push the pervious thought from her mind. Did Genie know? She and Bea had gotten along so well. Had spent so much time together.

It almost seemed like Katrina had sensed her. Genie froze when the younger girl looked around, seeming to be looking for someone. Her eyes passed right over where Genie stood, not moving a muscle, almost holding her breath. She thought about just taking off, her usually M.O., but figured it would be doing herself a disservice. She’d liked Kat well enough, and if Kat was here, maybe Bianca would be too. Were they still inseparable? [break][break]
It took only a moment before Kat appeared to recognize her. Genie gave a warm smile and nodded at her, confirming that she was remembering correctly. [break][break]
”I saw you walking and thought it was you. I hoped I wasn’t mistaking someone else for you, I’d look like such a fool.” She laughed at herself. ”Look at you! Little Katrina, all grown up now!” [break][break] It was weird, seeing someone she only remembered as a child all grown. Genie wondered if the girl had ever discovered her gifts, or if she was still blissfully unaware. Her brothers had been aware of their gifts, but Genie couldn’t remember it ever being talked about. No surprise, since her father and oldest brother were a part of the Guild, but still, she was curious if Kat had ever learned the truth. [break][break]
A part of her hoped not. Kat had been so pure, so innocent. She still looked innocent. If she didn’t know what kind of monster she was, maybe it was better that way. Safer for her and everyone else. She couldn’t intentionally hurt anyone if she didn’t know what she was. [break][break]
”I’ve been living here for a while.” Genie admitted, feeling a bit guilty. She could have tried to contact them. At least Kat and Bianca. She didn’t have anything against Nicholas, either. But Kat’s parents, Jeremy and Maddison, well, they could all rot and she would be okay with it. Genie didn’t know what to feel about JJ. He was like her. Forced into the life with very few choices he could make on his own. [break][break]
She knew there was no love lost between her and Mr. Wells. She had been difficult for him to control, and she was unapologetic about it. That’s part of why she got along with Bianca so well, he couldn’t really stop them from talking. When it came to Mrs. Wells, she just wanted the woman to leave her alone and stop trying to get inside her mind all the time. Genie hated her imploring questions, and the way she tried to learn about her. It felt predatory, even to a teenage Genie. [break][break]
”Are you here by yourself?” Genie glanced toward the bonfire, wondering if this was a family affair. If her parents were there, Genie wouldn’t be likely to stick around. But this didn’t seem like their kind of scene. It looked like mostly younger people from what Genie could see. But if Kat was there, maybe it meant Bianca was too. It would be great to catch up with both of the sisters.

You romanticize the feast and famine Paralyzed by fear of failing Katrina felt her cheeks warm a bit as Genesis mentioned her being all grown up now. It was a little strange seeing the other woman now as well. She supposed the last seven or so years would change a lot about a person. Perhaps more for her than it had for Genie. Though hearing that she'd been living in los Eurosia for a while made Katrina blink in surprise. She almost wanted to ask how long and why she hadn't come to visit her. But part of her knew why. If memory served her correct Genie hadn't gotten along well with her father. Much like Bianca she'd been one of the only people able to tell him no. Her father hadn't been particularly a fan of that. And it seemed like had it not been for how close Genie had been to JJ and Bianca that she likely wouldn't have been allowed to stay at the house. When she was asked if she were here alone though Katrina shook her head. Both in answer and trying to shake the fuzzy memories of her childhood from her mind. "A few of my friends brought me out here to celebrate my birthday but there's a lot more drinking than I thought there would be," she admitted a bit bashfully. Mostly because she felt like the odd one out when all her friends were drinking and having a good time. Perhaps she would have had a better time if Bianca were around. "Nick will probably be around a little later though if you wanted to see him!" She offered with a bit more enthusiasm. If just to change the subject a bit. JJ would be at home with his wife and kids so she likely wouldn't see him until tomorrow. Katrina still wasn't sure if Genie knew about her sister. Likely she didn't since she wasn't sure how much the two had kept up with each other after Genie left. She also wasn't sure how to broach that kind of subject. Without making things too heavy or awkward. "What have you been up to?" She asked instead as she watched the other woman's eyes looking around. Likely looking for one of her brothers or her sister.

It was somewhat surprising that she was there alone, but Genie supposed it shouldn’t be. Kat wasn’t a little girl anymore. She was an adult by now, even if she was still a young adult. The rest of what she’d said sunk in more slowly. Genie could recall birthday celebrations over the summers she spent with the Wells family. Always mid July… [break][break]
”Wait, it’s today, isn’t it? Happy birthday! What a weird day to run into each other.” Genie gave a rare, genuine smile. ”They aren’t trying to pressure you to join them drinking, are they?” Bianca would be upset if anything happened to her little sister. It had been years, but quickly, the protective feeling came back. Kat had always been so innocent and sweet. She still seemed to be. [break][break]
Kat said Nick would probably be coming a bit later. It would be nice to see him too, to catch up with both of them. ”Well, it sounds like I should stick around and keep you company for a bit. Unless you don’t want me to?” [break][break]
Genie wasn’t sure what all Kat knew about her, what she knew about the Guild or about Gifted. She was Gifted, but she hadn't known about it the last time Genie saw her. She couldn’t just come out and ask her, so she would have to be careful with what she told the younger woman.Of course, Katrina asked her what she’d been up to. There were so many answers to that question that she wouldn’t be giving. [break][break]
”I do temp work. Filling in for offices that are having staffing issues, or planned absences. Mostly doctor’s offices. I’m great with filing paperwork.” She let out a laugh. ”What about you? Are you going to college? What does life look like for you now?” [break][break]

You romanticize the feast and famine Paralyzed by fear of failing The happy birthday made Katrina let out a soft giggle as she smiled back at Genie. Hearing it from her was a little strange though. Katrina hadn't had a good connection with her birthday since her sisters death. It had felt like something in her life was missing. Like she was always waiting to feel Bianca's arms wrap around her and pull her into a too tight hug. Or feel her standing next to her, letting Katrina sap some of that confidence Bianca always radiated herself. But Genesis' smile helped alleviate some of that feeling. At least for a moment. "Thanks," she said softly with a small giggle. Katrina was almost old enough now that she could stop sneaking into bars or showing her fake ID so that she could play. Even if she still didn't think she'd be doing any drinking. "I'm really happy we were able to run into each other today," she said with a genuine warmth in her voice. It really was nice seeing Genie again after all these years. The summers she had spent with their family had felt like having another big sister around. Which at least helped them out number her older brothers. Though her question on if they were trying to pressure her to drink made Katrina's smile drop a bit. "Um...I mean not really? Uh it's not such a big deal," she said not incredibly convincingly. Though in all fairness Katrina didn't think they were really pressuring her. At least not as bad as they used to. Though she was happy to change the subject back to Genie when she suggested sticking around. "No I'd love for you to hang out!" She insisted excitedly. That same warm and bright smile tugging back to her lips. Hearing that Genie was doing temp work seemed...fitting? It at least gave her the option to move around more and experience different things. Which Katrina thought that she would like. "Yeah! I'm in college now studying to be a Trauma Nurse," with how often she was taking care of peoples wounds as it was, especially Nicholas', she was getting more practice than she ever thought she would. "I make some money performing lots of places uh, but um, my parents don't know about it," the last part came out a bit sheepishly. As if silently asking her not to say anything. Not that Katrina thought Genie would be close enough to interact with either of her parents any time soon. Let alone tell them squat about her life. "I mostly spend time studying and doing school work when I'm not playing, or picking up Nick from his fights."

The giggle was still so familiar, even all these years later. Genie had a habit of pushing away memories from that time in her life, forgetting that it wasn’t all bad. The Wells family was complicated, just like every other family that she’d stayed with, but the kids weren’t. Of course, they didn’t all know what she was or what they were, but she’d felt more normal around them than she did with most families. [break][break]
Bianca was a big part of that. They’d bonded over similar fathers and taste in music. She’d had a little bit of everything, and they would have late summer nights listening to CDs on repeat. The young Kat, always tagging along but never unwelcomed. Anyone could see how much she looked up to her older sister. Those had been some of the more ordinary nights that Genie had experienced as a teenager. Even when she was getting her ass kicked in training against the older JJ, or struggling to keep up with him on hunts, there was still a sense of normality. [break][break]
“I’m also glad.” Genie listened to Kat deny being pressured to drink. She wasn’t sure she entirely believed the young woman, but she supposed at twenty years old she was definitely old enough to handle her own problems. Unless she asked for help. “Well, don’t let anyone make you feel bad for sticking to your choices.” Katrina already had three older siblings. Genie was sure that she didn’t need or want any lectures, especially from someone she hadn't seen in so many years, so she left it at that. [break][break]
Kat insisted that she wanted Genie to stick around, and Genie couldn’t help the smile that spread on her face. She listened as Kat explained that she was in college, though she was surprised to hear the field of study. She wouldn’t have expected her to be studying to be a trauma nurse. Not that she really knew what the youngest Wells sibling was like these days, but it seemed like an outlier choice from how she remembered her. [break][break]
She was less surprised to hear about her playing music, and sneaking around behind her parents’ backs. [break][break]
“Well, that seems like an intense college program. And don’t worry, your secret is safe with me. Your parents don’t need to know anything you don’t want them to know.” If she’d figured out a way to have her own life out from under her father’s control, then Genie was thrilled for her. When she mentioned picking Nick up from fights, Genie was a little confused. “Fights? What do you mean?” She asked, curious about what Nick had gotten himself involved with. [break][break]

You romanticize the feast and famine Paralyzed by fear of failing If she were being honest most people hadn't expected Katrina to get into the program she was in. She'd always been a sensitive girl. Always cried easily, became stressed, overwhelmed, and startled quickly. A shy, insecure, anxious little thing. But it was as if a switch flipped when she was helping someone. When a person was hurt and needed her attention something in her changed. She could become more confident, decisive, and calm. While still giving off that air of warmth and safety. It was something she was good at and something she enjoyed doing. No matter how stressful or gory. "Well it was either this or become a famous musician and that just seemed like too much work," she said with a soft giggle. Music was still a passion for Katrina. As it always had been. But it wasn't something she wanted to make a career because she loved it so much. It wasn't something she wanted to stake her livelihood on because that always made things messy. Though as she asked about Nick's fights it dawned on Katrina that this would be news to Genie. Nick had been quieter back then. Still silly and sarcastic but much more reserved. And had been very much against fighting. Though Katrina could never remember why. He'd always said something about not wanting their dad to use something of his against others. But Katrina could never remember what that something of Nick's was. "Nick started fighting a couple of years ago after Bianca um..." she felt a hard lump of emotion rise in her throat. After Bianca died. Those three words all jumbled together and lodged in her throat. Threatening to choke her as she forcefully swallowed them back down. "He fights at a couple of different places, normally at this bare knuckle boxing club in East End," she settled on. Completely avoiding the topic of her sisters passing. "I go to pick him up most nights and help fix him up." Sometimes she would go early. Even though Nick didn't want her in the crowd while he was fighting. Not because he didn't want her to watch him fight, but because he didn't want to be distracted worrying about some creep getting his hands on her in the crowd. He didn't like her being in East End. Still, Katrina worried and she wanted to watch to see what she would be dealing with when he was done.

[nospaces] [attr="class","GENIELyrics"] Somewhere, this fate, I lost control[break] We count the days scratching lines on a wall. Wait in the wings at someone's beck and call. [break] No longer recognize the place that I call home. No longer recognize this face as my own. [break] [attr="class","GENIEBody"] Trying to imagine Katrina as a nurse wasn’t hard. She’d always seemed sweet and sensitive, but sometimes that could lend well to the medical field. She’d have a great bedside manner, at the very least. She’d be able to keep patients calm, to console them when necessary. Hopefully she wouldn’t carry their problems and trauma with her, though. Genie filled in at enough medical offices to realize that it wasn’t a career for the faint of heart. [break][break]
She couldn’t help but let out a laugh when Katrina mentioned that it was too much work trying to become a famous musician. “Well, yeah, it would be a lot of work. And way too many people staring at you. Being famous seems like it would be a nightmare.” Just the thought of hundreds or thousands of people, if not more, knowing anything about her gave Genie a skeeved out feeling. She was much too private of a person, fame sounded like her definition of hell. She didn’t know if Katrina would share that feeling, that aversion to being the center of attention and having people talk about her, knowing things about her. [break][break]
When Kat explained more about the fights that Nick was involved in, Genie kept herself from frowning. It was the kind of thing that could get him into trouble. Serious trouble if the wrong people found out. But she supposed he would at least be aware of the risk on some level. What didn’t make sense, what Genie wanted to know more about, was what she meant when she said after Bianca. After Bianca, what? Surely, it wasn’t something that Bianca had gotten herself involved with, right? [break][break]
“I suppose it makes sense he got himself tangled up into something like that.” Maybe it was some kind of rebellion. Maybe he wanted to spite his father, to lash out at do what he wanted, consequences be damned. Judging him was a knee jerk reaction that was deeply ingrained in her, but if said she didn’t understand on some level, she’d be lying. [break][break]
“I get why Nick would, but what did you mean about Bianca? Did she get herself caught up in the fighting scene as well?” It wouldn’t be the biggest surprise, not if she’d gotten caught up in the fight scene because of Nick, or just by trying to prevent him from doing it. But the way Katrina had left that hanging, it felt like there was more to the story. [break]

You romanticize the feast and famine Paralyzed by fear of failing Katrina was also pretty sure Nick had gotten into fighting because of some sort of rebellion. The same reason she'd gotten into singing at bars and sneaking off place her parents wouldn't know about. But while she'd decided to use her music as a form of rebellion her brother had decided to use his fists. Which had never been wholly unlike him. While he'd always bee more quiet as a child he'd also been known to have a temper. One he tampered down around their father but when wild when it was just him and his siblings. But while Katrina was fine with having eyes on her while she was singing she was far more private outside of that. Being a celebrity really did seem like far too much work. She was recognized enough as it was just because of who her father was. When Bianca had been alive it had also been because of who's little sister she was. Katrina couldn't imagine constantly having to worry about her picture being taken or being swarmed by hundreds of people while going out or having so much sensitive information about herself just set public for anyone to see. No, she'd prefer to help people with their more physical problems. Than being expected to hold the emotional weight of so many strangers. Though as she asked about her sister Katrina's expression darkened. She averted her eyes down to the sand and toyed anxiously with the little charm that dangled from her necklace. The matching necklace she'd had with Bianca for years. The one she hadn't taken off since they got it except to swim or shower. She even still slept in it. "No, no Bianca um..." she trailed off for a moment trying to think of the best way to go about saying what she planned to say. "Bianca passed away six years ago," her voice was quieter as she tried to bite back the sorrow that always flooded her voice when she talked about her sister. She couldn't help though how her brows knit together. Or how dark clouds began moving in to block out the sun. Even the tides became rougher as they picked up and crashed harder against the shore. She still got flashes of seeing her sister hanging from the ceiling of their room when she closed her eyes. She still couldn't shake the feeling that it hadn't been Bianca who put herself up there. "It's just me and Nick and JJ now," her voice waivered slightly as she tried to swallow that lump of emotion that wanted to lodge in her throat. "Um, JJ has a baby now though, and another one on the way." Talking about her brothers children was easier than talking about the death of her sister. Even if it didn't make the storm clouds over head budge even slightly.

When the conversation turned to Bianca, Genie noted the change in Katrina’s expression and she fidgeted with her necklace, the one that Genie knew matched Bianca’s. Did they have a falling out? Did Bianca move away and cut off her family? That would have been only a slight surprise. Genie wasn’t prepared to hear that Bianca had died six years ago. More than that, she was surprised by how much hearing it made her feel, how deeply it saddened her. [break][break]
Bianca had been one of the first people Genie ever felt a true connection to. They’d bonded over their horrible fathers, over being different, and over the desire not to conform, not to be controlled. She’d been the first girl Genie had ever had a crush on, the first girl she’d ever kissed. Genie hadn't thought about her in years, but after Katrina’s news, the memories bubbled right to the forefront. She took in a breath, pushing back her own feelings with much practiced effort. [break][break]
“Oh Katrina, I’m so sorry. I had no idea.” Genie noticed the weather was matching Kat’s mood. The sky was darkening, the wind and surf picking up. Did she still not know? Was she still blissfully unaware of the fact that she and the rest of her family were Gifted? Or was she just unable to control her gift? [break][break]
As she went one, describing JJ’s family, the atmosphere seemed to settle. It was no longer getting darker. Genie could only assume, and hope, that Katrina was still unaware. She was sweet. She was innocent. She always had been, and Genie refused to think she may have been corrupted, by her gift or by her family. But with Bianca gone for the past six years, was it still possible? [break][break]
“JJ is a dad already?” As much as she wanted to ask what happened to Bianca, she didn’t want Katrina to feel obligated to talk about it. It was the younger girl’s birthday, she didn’t need Genie poking at what clearly was still hard for her to talk about. Asking about JJ seemed to be the better choice. Besides, him having a family already was nearly as surprising. Although, he was older and he’d always been a good boy and done what was expected of him. It shouldn’t be too surprising. It probably looked good. More than likely, JJ was the great hope for Jeremy Sr to pass on the Wells’ family legacy. Mr. Wells had always cared more about appearances than the happiness or desires of his children. “I bet you’re an amazing aunt. Do you see them often?” [break]

You romanticize the feast and famine Paralyzed by fear of failing Katrina didn't want Genie to feel sorry. Because of course she wouldn't have known. She was long gone by then. No longer spending those summers with them or texting or calling her or Bianca. And why would she? People got older. They changed. It was a natural part of life and something Katrina wasn't confused about anymore. People were meant to change. As scary as it was nothing was ever meant to remain the same. What mattered was she was here now. Even if it couldn't be with Bianca. She could imagine how excited her sister would have been to see Genie if she were alive. All squeals and hugs and refusing to let her go. It was bitter sweet to think about. But Genie's apology made her shake her head. "No, it's okay," she insisted with a sad sort of smile. "She wrote you a letter before...before it happened," the letter was still sitting in a box of Bianca's old things under her sisters bed. Along with a few pictures her sister had kept, some important jewelry she'd had, and her old phone. "I haven't read it or anything but I've been keeping it with some of her old stuff, if you wanted to read it." She wasn't really sure Genie would want it. A six year old letter from a dead woman? One she hadn't seen or spoken to years before the incident even happened? But Bianca had been so sure that Genie hadn't forgotten them then. "There's also a few pictures she kept of you two together and an old shirt of yours she'd kept if you want them," though Katrina was loathe to get rid of any of her sisters things. These things were for Genie too. Someone Bianca had really loved and cared about. They weren't Katrina's to hoard if Genie wanted them. Her question about her brother and his children made her smile a little brighter. "JJ still comes over a lot so I get to see them tons," Katrina loved her brothers rugrat. And she knew she'd love the one on the way too. "And of course he has me babysit when I'm not busy with school," she said with a small laugh. Though it seemed her mood had lightened outwardly the dark clouds over head still hadn't seemed to budge an inch. "His wife is really nice too," though she wasn't sure Genie would like her. Bianca hadn't really liked her when they first got together. Said something was wrong with her. She acted too sweet and perfect all the time. But her mother had brushed off Bianca's concerns. Saying she was always so paranoid about everyone.

How many more years would it have been before she learned about Bianca if she hadn't run into Katrina today? At one point, Genie would have said Bianca was her best friend. At the very least, she’d had a way of making her open up more than anyone else had before, and being more vulnerable than she probably had since. Teenaged Genie didn’t quite know how to handle it at first, but Bianca had made it all less confusing. [break][break]
Hearing that Bianca wrote her a letter was almost as much of a surprise. Had Katrina not said she hadn't read it, Genie would have probably asked what it said. She couldn’t imagine what it could possibly be. When did she write it? How long had Bianca thought about her after her last summer with the Wells family? Genie didn’t believe getting back in touch with them was worth the risk of exposing herself to Jeremy Wells again, she had let her fear of dealing with him keep her away. She compartmentalized what good memories she had and moved on, never pausing to consider that maybe the Wells siblings would still think about her. [break][break]
“Oh, uh, I never expected that she’d still have that stuff.” Genie was terrible at expressing herself. She was so used to suppressing her emotions until she could process them privately, she was having trouble knowing what to say. “She was your sister, you should hold on to them.” Seeing the pictures might be nice, but Genie had no plans to take something from Katrina that had belonged to her sister. [break][break]
Hearing about JJ’s kid and wife, it seemed right somehow, what she would have expected. He was always the one to do as he was told, to try to look good in his father’s eyes. She did wonder if he’d grown a backbone yet, or if he still did everything his father demanded of him. [break][break]
She supposed that wasn’t fair. As much as she had her own feelings about it, JJ had been a victim of his father just like everyone else. Even if he’d wanted to disobey his father, would he have been able to? Genie had an advantage for disobeying the orders of someone with mind control abilities that most people didn’t have. She was well suited to challenge him. Did he still pull the puppet strings of his remaining children? She had to assume so. [break][break]
“I’m glad to hear it. He deserves to be happy and with someone he cares about.” Genie smiled, trying to reassure Katrina. The sky was still dark, but it seemed to have steadied off, no longer getting darker. “What about you? Anyone special for you yet?” Even if she had someone in her life, Genie suspected it couldn’t be the one or whatever. Kat was still so young. [break]

You romanticize the feast and famine Paralyzed by fear of failing Katrina found pretty much anything that had been left behind by her sister precious to her. Pictures, books, old clothes, any little remnants she had left of her sister. Bianca had always been good about bringing the more out of people. Of making things feel easy and light. When Katrina had been around her sister she'd felt confident. Like she could take on the world as long as she'd had Bee to back her up. As much as she would have liked to keep everything to herself, just because Bianca had been her sister didn't mean that she hadn't been a large impact on other peoples lives. And those people deserved to have pieces of her as much as she did. If they wanted them. Katrina understood how sometimes having those little pieces of someone you loved could hurt as much as losing them did. So she wouldn't push Genie to take anything. "I can give you my new number though, if there's anything you want. Or if you just wanted to keep in touch," she offered still. It had been a while since Katrina really thought about Genie. Many of her childhood memories were still foggy or just blank all together. Like there was a wall in her mind stopping her from accessing the past. But she remembered being fairly close to Genie. And remembered her sister caring a great deal about her. And if anyone was important to Bianca they were important to Katrina. Though as she was asked about her own romantic endeavors her cheeks flushed a light pink color. "Oh no," she said quickly with a nervous chuckle and a shake of her head. "Mom and dad have a guy they want me to marry though." The same thing they'd done with Nicholas and Bianca and JJ. Though JJ had married the girl his parents picked for him. Her other siblings had been less receptive to having their love lives meddled with. "Trina!" Katrina looked up at the sound of a familiar voice and saw her brother booking towards her down the sand. A bright smile broken across his lips.
