Invisibility - the gift was discovered when she was very young. Her father made her practice and practice, until she could control it at will.
Reactive adaptation/evolution - the more a particular gift is used against Genie, the easier time she has resisting. She is not completely immune to any power, no matter how many times it has been used against her. The stronger the wielder of a power is, the more trouble she has resisting. With practice, she is generally able to temporarily resist a power's effect.
THE LOOKS

WEIGHT: 125
HAIR COLOR: red
EYE COLOR: brown
FACE CLAIM: Stacey Farber
OVERALL APPEARANCE:
Genie has bright red hair, usually kept long and straightened. It is naturally slightly wavy, but it is stubborn and won’t take a curl for anything. She’s got brown eyes and a warm smile. She tends to stick to neutral colors for her clothing, opting to blend in and not be noticed, despite her vibrant hair color. If she wears makeup, it’s generally eyeliner, eyeshadow, and lip gloss. Nothing overly flashy, unless her goal is to be noticed, which is rare. On the underside of her right wrist, Genie has an octopus tattoo, with tentacles wrapping around her wrist.
INSIDE
LIKES:
- Thunder storms
- Iced coffee
- All forms of music
DISLIKES:
- Being touched, especially unexpectedly
- Discussing her childhood
- Failing to complete a job that she has been assigned
STRENGTHS:
- Stealth and sneaking around
- Appearing harmless
- Following orders without putting much thought into what she’s actually doing
- Finding a way to survive, even if it isn’t ideal
WEAKNESSES:
- Connecting with other people is difficult for Genie
- She has nightmares about things she’s seen (and done), including her mother’s death and father’s crimes. When she wakes from a nightmare, she’s more likely to hurt herself or act irrationally.
- She flees when she feels threatened, job done or not
OVERALL PERSONALITY:
Genesis doesn't particularly enjoy the work that she does for the Guild, but she consoles herself with the knowledge that she is riding the world of people like her father. She has been brainwashed into believing that most gifted are truly evil, just like he was. She knows that there are exceptions, of course, but she doesn't let herself dwell too much on the thought that maybe some of the marks she has eliminated did not deserve to be put down.
When she isn't working, she tries to blend in with society. She is almost never the life of the party, she's more likely to be the wallflower who observes quietly from the side, watching everyone else interact oh so easily. She is jealous that is seems to come so naturally to some people. She has a very difficult time connecting with people, partially because she doesn't trust anyone not to hurt or betray her.
BACKGROUND
HOMETOWN: Genie was born in Queens, New York. She bounced around from city to city so often that she doesn’t really consider anywhere actually home. The one place she spent the most time in was Los Angeles, but that just feels like a prison to her and not truly a home.
FAMILY:
- Amelia Mary Tanner Donovan - mother, deceased
- Raymond “Ray” Steven Donovan - father, presumed still at large (recently deceased)
PETS: none
HISTORY:
CW: suicide/murder; self harm
Genie is the daughter of Raymond “Ray” Donovan and his first wife, Amelia. They were very young when they met, and Amelia fell for Ray’s charms. She didn’t know, at first, that he was gifted and he was making her do things she wouldn’t have otherwise done. It started out small - stealing candy bars from the gas station, walking out of a restaurant without paying, things like that. He would convince her that it was her idea, and it worked for a while. But eventually, she caught on. It was too late. They were already expecting a child together, and they were supposed to be married. Ray used his power to force Amelia to elope with him. He promised he would stop, that he wouldn’t use the power on her anymore. He just wanted to be with her, he wanted to have a family.
He lied.
It didn’t take long after Genie’s birth before things started to get steadily worse. Ray turned Amelia into an unwilling criminal. He made her steal. He made her hurt people. He made her hurt herself. When things got really bad between them, he threatened to make Amelia hurt their daughter. Amelia couldn’t take it anymore.
One day, when Ray was out, Amelia started packing a couple bags for herself and four year old Genie. She had to get them both away from Ray. But before she could finish getting the bags packed and get out of the apartment, Ray came home. He was too early. Amelia panicked and tried to hide the bags, but Ray had already seen them.
While Genie was sitting on the bed, surrounded by shirts and pairs of jeans that had yet to be thrown into a bag, playing with her favorite stuffed panda, Ray grabbed his wife’s arm and pushed her toward their small walk-in closet.
”You want to hang yourself. Immediately.” He used his power, and she couldn’t resist.-----
Ray moved with his daughter frequently. He used her as a pawn, just like he used everyone. He pretended to be the dutiful, widowed father, doing his best to scrap by with his little girl in tow. He garnered sympathy from strangers, then turned around and ‘convinced’ them to empty their wallets into his waiting palm. When Genie would fuss or resist going along with the plan easily, Ray would use his power on her until she obeyed. He noticed that with her, sometimes he had to tell her multiple times before it would work, before she would do as he said. He’d never encountered that before, but assumed maybe it had something to do with her being his daughter.
When she was almost six years old, she just disappeared one day. Ray spent most of an afternoon looking for her, and then, just as suddenly as she had gone, she was back. She insisted she hadn't gone anywhere, that she was just hiding in her room the whole time.
I did not take long before Ray discovered what his daughter was capable of. He would force her to practice using her gift of invisibility, until she learned how to control it at will. Over the years, he also discovered that she was able to completely resist his commands, the majority of the time.
Genie watched her father rob people. She watched him marry women, time and time again, only to have them die or disappear under mysterious circumstances. He tended to marry human women, no chance of going up against a gift that would best his own mind control powers. They moved from town to town, state to state, never staying in any one place long enough for Ray to get caught.
For nine years, Genie traveled with him. She would use her invisibility to hide whenever it felt like there would be danger. Ray was on his fifth or sixth wife, and they were in Los Angeles at the time. In the middle of the night, the hunters came. Again. This time there were more of them than before.
They were so quiet, and inside the apartment before with a skilled quickness. No one woke up before they started their assault. Genie woke to her father shouting orders, undoubtedly grabbing the nearest hunter by the wrist, or neck, or whatever exposed flesh he could latch onto. She could hear him turning them on each other.
Genie didn’t have a chance to disappear before she was spotted. The nearest hunter grabbed her, and dragged her out of the apartment before the others could get to him. Genie was meant to be bait, to be a ransom to make Ray turn himself in. However, they didn’t know that he wouldn’t bother to put himself at risk, even for his own child. Genie was thirteen years old, and she found herself captive of an organization that detested her very existence.
The Guild found her useful enough to keep her around, as long as she obeyed them. Lucky for them, she was used to taking orders, and just doing what she was told came as naturally as her gifts themselves.
(Mostly) hidden on Genie’s upper left inside arm, there are thin scars. One can be found for each life that she has been ordered to take. While everything else is spinning out of control around her, she uses the pain to remind herself that she is still human, that she can still feel, and that at least this one thing, she still has some control.
It has been twelve years since Genie was taken, molded, and turned into just another weapon of the Guild. For the last few years, she has been living in Los Eurosia, working as a temp agent and doing her best to blend in with the humans there. She works the jobs that she’s handed, trying to be quick and efficient with each one. She has had her fair share of mishaps, and she makes liberal use of paid time off and sick time with her job.
One bounty that has remained at the top of the list all these years, Genie’s father, haunts her. She sees his face in her nightmares and blames him for what she has become. She still checks the listings every once in a while, and when sees the smug mugshot of him, she remembers all of the hatred that she still holds for him. She is both impressed and repulsed by his ability to evade the hunters for so long.
