[attr="class","ig"]Aurora had never been to a drive-in movie before. With what seemed to be an arsenal of streaming services at humanity’s fingertips, she had never felt the need to ever go see one- until tonight. Aurora’s day had been drab and uneventful; even her writing, which was usually the best part of her day, didn’t seem very interesting anymore. She needed to spice things up. She needed to go on an adventure. She needed to do… well, something.
Earlier that day, Aurora had just been sitting on the couch melting in the sun, listening to the analog clock in the living room tick, tick, tick. Over and over. With every second that seemed to pass, another cell in her body would turn to jell-o. She grunted, trying to sit up but instantly greeted by a fresh wave of vertigo. The uncomfortable wash of uneasiness made her wince, getting back into a less dizzying position on the couch. Her back hurt, but what could a couple more hours on the couch do to her anyway? Kill her? Please. Aurora was stronger than that.
It was then a voice from behind her spoke, slightly stern but caring. “Ay nako, Aurora, you’ve been laying around all day. Get up, eat something!” Aurora turned her head to be greeted by her tita Kristina, waving an arm motion Aurora towards the kitchen. With another groan, Aurora sat up and let the vertigo wash over her once more, getting up completely. She smiled towards Kristina, tired but thankful. After giving her a slight kiss on the cheek, she opened the fridge, beginning to dig through it as she talked. “Hi, Tita. How was your day?”
“It was good, baby; productive but not too stressful.” As Aurora turned away from the fridge with a handful of blueberries, she caught a glimpse of Kristina giving her a unimpressed look. “I would ask how your day was, but I can see you didn’t do much.”
Aurora sighed, ruffling her hair. Kristina wasn’t wrong, but yet she still felt slightly defensive. “I went to work! That’s got to be something.” She began stuffing the blueberries into her mouth, gnawing on them excessively. They were hard like cherry tomatoes, popping in her mouth, leaving nothing but the flimsy skin behind for her to chew. “There’s just nothing interesting happening that I feel like doing.” Kristina stared at Aurora unamused, taking a pause to hear the subtle pops emanating into the air. She stepped closer, taking a blueberry from Aurora and popping it into her own mouth. “Well, if you’re looking for something to do, there’s going to be a movie showing tonight at the Los Eurosia drive in. It’s a showing for some kind of movie adaptation of a book… ‘Leo’s Toystore,’ by… ‘Warren Peace,’ I think.”
Continuing to pop blueberries in her mouth, Aurora slinked over to a chair by the kitchen island, flopping down onto it. “I’ve never heard of that book before.” She quirked her eyebrow up, a little skeptical. “Are you sure this isn’t something I can find on Netflix or something?”
“Hey, you were looking for something to do.” Kristina raised her hands up, taking a couple steps back before retreating back into the kitchen, beginning to chop up some vegetables. Aurora raised her hand up to her mouth, swiftly swallowing the rest of the blueberries. She took a beat to think about Kristina’s proposal. First off, it was something to do in the midst of nothing. Second off… well, no need, Aurora was already convinced. After checking the showing time online and putting it on her schedule, she flopped back onto the living room couch, melding with it for the next couple of hours.
And now here she was in Kristina’s car, pulling into the drive-in. Aurora never liked cars and had wanted to walk there, but convinced herself that it was a part of the “drive in movie experience” and took one anyway. She pulled into a spot and got out of the car, immediately feeling the coolness of the outside air brush up against her skin. She was wearing a small but stylish wool cardigan and nicely fitting jeans, trying to look nice for the event but not too flashy, but as she looked around at the other people pulling out camping chairs from the trunks of their cars, Aurora began to see that even she overdressed a little. She tried to let it go, though, as she pulled her own chair and blanket out from her trunk and set it up behind her car. She cozied up, the movie starting in front of her.
As it began to play, though, she felt something off about the introduction. This definitely didn’t look like a movie about a Toystore. Her suspicions continued to grow throughout the beginning sequences until the title screen hit: “War and Peace, by Leo Tolstoy.” Aurora burst into loud laughter, unable to control herself in the moment. Kristina ended up being a little bit off about the movie, it seemed.
It was then when she saw noticed the people staring, and so she brought herself to a stop. She was in a public setting, and even though the thought still lagged at the back of her mind, laughing definitely wasn’t appropriate in the moment. Aurora briefly excused herself, feeling more giggles start to arise. She wasn’t looking where she was walking, though, because she found herself collide with another person on the way to the concessions stand.
Aurora did not enjoy the tumble- the ground was made of gravel, and she could feel each rock hit her back painfully as she came crashing down. She groaned, looking up to see who she could have bumped into, wanting to survey the situation in case the other person was hurt as well. Things definitely didn’t seem so funny anymore.
