Emie learned about her ability pretty young. She tripped on the playground and scraped her knee, but before she could run to her mother it had already started healing up. Her mother recognized what was happening, and wanted to make sure it was kept quiet. Because her mother always seemed afraid of anyone finding out, she tried to corral Emie and keep her from activities where she would get hurt, but that didn’t go well with the rambunctious kid. Thankfully, she didn’t tend to get noticeably hurt very often, so it didn’t become an issue.

Emie is petite. She is short and thin, with thick brown hair that she frequently changes in style. She will dye it or cut it on a whim. It’s only hair, it’ll grow back or she can always dye it another color if she doesn’t like how it turns out. She’s always been a bit of a tomboy, and prefers shorts or jeans and a comfortable shirt, but as she’s maturing she is gaining an appreciation for dressing up as well. She isn’t fond of high heels, so she’s almost always found in flats unless it’s a really special occasion. She’s a bit of a wild child, and her eccentric style reflects that.
Emie has a butterfly tattoo, made up of her mother and brother’s fingerprints, on her left foot.

Emie is bubbly and vibrant. She doesn't waste time overthinking things and will just dive right into the deep end. If she wants to do something she really commits, and anyone trying to dissuade her will just make her work harder. She is friendly and supportive, and she thinks people she stop worrying so much about what other people think and just be themselves. She is unapologetically a weirdo. She gets easily excited, and has a terrible poker face. She loves her family, and gets along with her step siblings and younger half siblings pretty well, and she ropes her friends into coming to family gatherings all the time.

Emerson was born 13 minutes after her twin brother, Emmet. Theodore and Rose Vanderbilt were expecting two sons, and were surprised when the second child was a girl. They still liked the name Emerson and thought it was unisex enough to work for her. They changed her middle name from the matching ‘Lee’ that they used for Emmett into the feminine ‘Leigh’.
The twins were little monsters. Always getting into things that they shouldn’t, causing chaos, and giggling constantly. They were inseparable, even when school started. Any time they had the same classes, the teacher would get fed up with their antics and pranks, and try to sit them across the room from each other, but usually that just ended up with note passing or throwing things. They were both big goofballs.
When Emie and Emmett were 3, their parents' marriage fell apart. It was amicable, and they adjusted pretty well. Even though the twins didn’t know it, part of what split their parents apart was them being gifted. Their mother was gifted and their father is human, and they disagreed on how to handle the kid’s budding gifts. Emmett had telepathy, and he could communicate with them without speaking. It wasn’t noticeable unless he flaunted it. Rose was omni-lingual, but just told people she studied language to explain why she was fluent in so many languages. But Emie’s gift could be noticed. Rose was terrified of Emie being discovered, but Theodore wanted the kids to both just be themselves. He thought if he could see them as normal kids, so would everyone else. It wasn’t the only thing that drove Rose and Theodore apart, but it was the last straw with their marriage.
Pretty quickly, Theodore remarried. He gained a stepdaughter and stepson, and had 2 more children with his new wife, Angela. The families blended well together, and the kids all acted just like natural siblings with each other. Bickering, laughing, playing pranks on each other. Out of respect for his ex-wife, Theodore kept the twins’ gifts a secret from Angela and the other kids, and left it to the twins to decide if and when they wanted to reveal themselves to their new family members.
When the twins were 14, they were going on a road trip with their mom. It was stormy, and they were being goofballs in the car, like usual. Rose turned to yell at them to be quiet, and didn’t notice the car in front of them had stopped suddenly. She turned back toward the road, and swerved to avoid hitting it, and hyper planed in a puddle which made the car flip. They were struck by another vehicle and rolled over several times. Emie was in the back seat, pinned, but alive. She was already starting to heal from the most minor of her injuries by the time the responders got on scene. Her mother and twin brother, in the front seat and having taken a more direct impact on the initial collision, had both sustained fatal injuries. Rose died on scene, and Emmett passed away in the ambulance on the way to the hospital.
It took a long time and a lot of therapy, but Emie has gotten past most of the trauma and guilt from being the only survivor. It was a freak accident, and there was no one to blame, not even herself.
She became a cheerleader in school, played soccer, went out for student council, and overall kept herself extremely busy. On her 18th birthday she got a butterfly tattoo on her foot, using fingerprints from her mom and brother for the wings. She knows that life is too short, and doesn’t want to waste it by moping around and being depressed all the time.
Yoga was something that Emie discovered through a recommendation of a therapist, and she fell in love with it. The way she can calm her mind and just be in the moment was the perfect way to get her through her grief. Now, she has a part time job at a gym, teaching yoga classes to their members. She’s also a full time student, finishing up her degree in early education, hoping to be an elementary school teacher.
